Avery gasps, still clutching her chest when she finally respawns. When she fully rematerializes in the comfort of Nixtorm, the Kingdom where people couldn't just come out of nowhere and blow you up, she pats herself down to make sure she's okay. [break][break]

"Goodness."[break][break]

She hazards a breath as she comes to her senses. What had happened, exactly? The last thing she remembered she'd been running across the bridges between Valora and whatever other Kingdom she'd been headed to. She was pretty sure her menus still said she was in Orion's party, but she wasn't exactly sure how they worked.[break][break]

Gods, this game was complicated. Where was Bo? Why was she still logged in? She needed a warm tea and her fluffy blanket back home, not the cold reality of the virtual world. [break][break]

But she couldn't find the log-out button, and she couldn't remember what that polite stranger had showed her when she'd asked the other day.

[attr="class","spiral"]It isn't long after a successful hunt that Fernando returns to a nearby city. He has to deload his inventory and claim his upgrades. Hunting actual players provides the best return in the game, able to loot their own items and the added experience that outright beats anything short of a party required boss monster.

He leaves kyle lopez to go about his own business while Fernando stocks up on some much needed item. As the primary shotcaller of their band of misfits, most of the responsibilities of ensuring their success falls on him. It's mostly because only Bailey Cooper and himself show any real interest in killing others but with enough coercion, the rest of the Elite Four join in. All they have to do is tie his pay to his in-game success and Kyle comes running, like the good little dog boy that he is.

He spots Avery among the crowd and when their eyes lock he waves toward her, smiling. "Oi, little gal. You grabbing enough MC to cross Avia this time?"

She freezes in the middle of a crowd, panic paralyzing her in much the same manner that her attacker's zap cannon had done. She almost feels the ghost pain return in the middle of her back, the claws of dread causing her breath to hitch. No, not now, not here, not again.[break][break]

Avery very slowly turns her head to lock eyes with the avatar that had been responsible for her abrupt end. It takes all of her strength to not cry right on the spot, and she reaches for her staff - not that it would do anything to protect her. She's momentarily forgotten they're in a safe zone, that he can't just attack her as he had in Valora.[break][break]

"S-stay away from me!"[break][break]

She finally gasps, taking a step back and phasing through an NPC, their image shimmering as she glitches through the man's torso. He continues to smile and offer in-game fruit from his cart, completely unphased. [break][break]

"I-I-- I don't want to fight you."

Fernando motions for her to hush before she creates a scene. His smile turns into an unsettled look of awkwardness as he tries to defuse the situation. "We're not in the PVP area anymore. Killing you ain't worth squat. Ain't nothing to be afraid of."

He follows her for a bit, strafing around the NPC rather than through it.

"As long as ya don't end up in another PVP zone without toll money."

Calm down? How was she supposed to calm down when this hunter, this murderer, was still following her?[break][break]

She had continued to back away and hurry down the street, clutching her staff as though her life depended on it. All she wanted was some warm tea to soothe the panic in her belly - not to be hunted down again in broad daylight![break][break]

Once again she's reminded that they're not in the PVP area, but it honestly does little to relax her. This situation is not at all one that she'd prefer to be in, but she felt she had nowhere else to go.[break][break]

"Killing me wasn't worth 'squat' as you say, to begin with! At least I'm sure that was the case - I'm not worth anything at all."[break][break]

She's almost sad when she admits that.

It feels weird to pursue her but considering how little the people around them care, Fernando feel obligated to set the record straight. Not because of some sense of guilt after killing her but to make sure the player base understands the basic concepts of the game. After all, the last thing he wants is a server full of care bears that play off of feelings and not their own personal gain. That's how the game should be played, to be the very best, and he looks to push that narrative to those around him.

"Killing you in a PVP zone was worth a pretty penny. You and your friend were worth about three hours of killing regular monsters out here in a PVE zone. Three hours of work versus ten minutes of combat? Ain't nothing personal, just how the game is structured."

Avery sucks in a breath when he finally catches up, and she's found herself rooted to the spot and unable to dodge him any further. He seems insistent on speaking with her. She frowns, visibly upset by this.[break][break]

The healer shifts her weight on her heels before looking back up at Fernando, meeting his gaze.[break][break]

"I-- that's just cruel. Is that all you care about? Killing others because of experience or whatever?"[break][break]

Her voice trembles a bit and, admittedly, she has no idea what she's talking about.[break][break]

"I just wanted to help take care of an egg, I wasn't expecting people to be so cruel to an unborn Pokemon."[break][break]

No, it didn't occur to her that it wasn't real - that the Pokemon egg wasn't real and nothing bad had actually happened.[break][break]

"This game is a lot more.. intimidating.. than I was told. I just want to have fun."

"That's the point of the game...?"

He sighs and rubs the back of his neck. Typical care bear. What a pain.

"If you don't want to get attacked by another player then you should stick to the zones that don't allow you to be attacked. PVP zones are designated to let people attack each other for a reason."

He looks at her and then back toward the crowd.

"You know that the egg is just a bunch of fake pixels, right? You have to kill those same monsters to get experience if you don't kill players anyway."

He pauses.

"If you want something more peaceful then why don't you try Hello Skitty's Online Adventure?"

The surprise on her face paints quite a picture. Clearly she was unaware of what the point of the game was. [break][break]

"Surely there's more to this game than just.. that, right? Where's the farming? The housekeeping, the.. the anything else?"[break][break]

Perhaps she should have read the plotline of this game before blindly pressing 'go'.[break][break]

She frowns at his suggestion, but she isn't trying to oppose it. He's right, after all. But she still had quests to finish in the PVP areas, and she wasn't the type to just give up when the going got tough.[break][break]

'Nothing worth having comes easy' was her mantra.[break][break]

"Fake pixels or not, it is my duty as a healer to protect!"[break][break]

Avery does, however, frown quite visibly when he mentions the senseless murder of these pixelated mobs. So far she had managed to not kill a single thing - at least not personally. Teammates she had paired with had essentially carried her through the game. She was probably one of the strongest healers, so she was always in high need. [break][break]

It's a shame she was a terrible player.[break][break]

Fernando cringes inwardly at her commitment to protect everyone else but his avatar doesn't show it. It almost makes him want to log off and PK her IRL but that's to be expected. God, this server was almost as unbearable as Hoenn.

And then she takes the bait seriously and he loses all hope.

"That might be a better fit for you. You don't seem like the type to enjoy competition."

Avery pauses, considering his words. It was clear that she hadn't taken any of the game's mechanics into consideration. Or maybe she had just been squeezing her eyes shut tight and believing hard in what she wished could be true.[break][break]

"But... some of the stuff I need for my farming and crafting I need to venture into the PVP for. I'm just not strong enough for it."[break][break]

She was thinking now to the Minotaur horn or what have you that she needed for building a new hammer. She had recently discovered that she had a knack for putting things together.[break][break]

"And healers are in 'high demand' or whatever. Players need me, don't they? I can't say no."[break][break]

Avery sighs quietly, unsure what else to say. He was definitely on the mark - she didn't like competition. She had seen so many people's kindness turn to savagery and dishonesty in the heat of combat. Competition brought out the worst in people, and she refused to let it taint her, too.

Fernando's actually astounded by how something so simple escapes her. Unless the material is super rare then buying it off other players should be the natural next step. Maybe she's new to gaming. What a pain.

However, her next comment brings no mercy from him. You can be a care bear. You can be ignorant. And you can certainly be a pushover, but all three?

He draws his weapon and points it at her. "And I need you to die for me to increase my KDA. You going to say no to that, girly?"

Her fingers drum against her upper arm as she thinks, even begins to pace back and forth in front of him.[break][break]

There's something about antagonizing those who are both weaker and stupider than himself that amuses to Fernando to no end. Watching her pout and get riled up reminds him of Isra Nightingale but without the tasteful rebuttal that puts her on an even pedestal. He'll accept what he can get earnestly, answering her by pulling the trigger. It clicks, loudly, but nothing comes out. He can't attack while in town and he holsters the weapon with a cocky sneer.

"Why do you need a weapon if you're a healer. You're not PVPing." He raises a finger to notate point one. "You don't have to do anything you don't want to. You're a healer not a crafter." That's point two. "You know how but you can't. That's why they're valuable and that's why people sell them. There's no point in selling it if no one needs it."
