For the first time in a while, Thea has ditched the dress. The rigid attire and properness of her appearance has been replaced with practicality in the form of form-fitting yoga pants or leggings and a tank top. There's a backpack strapped between her shoulders full of essentials: mostly water.[break][break]

There's a sheen to her skin in the form of sunscreen, but even despite the protection, the heat seems to be wearing her down. Her fair skin is flushed with heat from the sun. More than likely she's already burning.[break][break]

Thea Rhodes is stubborn, however. She had told herself she would climb to the top of Mt. Pyre (or at least as high as she possibly could). Hoenn was fascinating and beautiful and she fully intended to experience as much of it as she could.[break][break]

For now, though, the woman clutched her knees and stooped over to catch her breath. She breathes slowly through her nose before glancing up at the young woman standing not far away.[break][break]

"You alright? We can slow down if you need. There's water in my pack, too."

"i'm fine." unlike thea, her own attire hasn't diverted in the slightest from her usual wear. iris always found a uniform more comfortable, more reassuring. her munna floats beside her--the rangers had told her to give blue a break--unbothered by the long distance they've managed to cross.

iris looks at the woman for a moment longer. "i think a water break would be good though." it was easy to get dehydrated when so focused on simply moving forward. iris would be of no use to anyone if she didn't take care of her health first.

Oh thank god.[break][break]

Thea braces herself against a rocky shelf, the perfect place for sitting. Her hands squeeze her knees as she catches her breath. She's doing her best to not look like an out of shape older woman in front of the young and spry - but the fact remains: she's out of shape. Very clearly so.[break][break]

And, while she isn't a particularly prideful woman, admitting anything other than peak performance just isn't going to happen.[break][break]

So the break comes as a great relief when Iris suggests a water break. Even if Thea had sort of suggested it in passing when offering water to begin with. Teamwork.[break][break]

She fishes one of several bottles in her pack, unscrewing it (habit, for the children) before passing it to Iris.[break][break]

"You're tough, Iris. I don't know where you get the energy from but I admire it."

[attr="class","ithread"]iris murmurs her thanks as she takes the water bottle. taking a few large gulps from it, she realises she's thirstier than she thought. the walk seemed to have distracted her, or maybe she was just used to pushing aside her needs.

"oh...thank you." she flushes slightly at the compliment (at least she could blame it on the hike, if thea pressed). "i'm just used to a lot of exercise."
[break][break]
rocket had worked her to the bone, and while the rangers were infinitely less demanding (in that sense, at least) iris saw no need to break a good habit. it never did harm to stay in shape, and meant she could work to the best of her abilities.

Thea cracks open her own bottle, reclining on one hand as she observes her surroundings and takes a generous sip of her water. The warmth of it from being tucked in her bag is slightly off-putting, but she appreciates it nonetheless.[break][break]

Whether she catches the flush in Iris' cheeks and relates it back to its true source is unclear - she never addresses it. Instead, she offers a polite smile before re-capping her drink and storing it back in her pack. The woman sighs, thumb worrying at a rough spot on the rocky ledge she sits on.[break][break]

"I bet. The life of a ranger is hard work, I can only imagine."[break][break]

She, meanwhile, often only got whatever exercise was offered from wearing heels day in and day out. The life of a private school teacher was hardly exhausting in the physical department - just mentally and emotionally.

Thea chuckles out loud at that, nodding in appreciation. She, too, liked hard work. Although her work was usually less strenuous physically than Iris could possibly be, she could see the appreciation for it.[break][break]

"'Idle hands are the devil's workshop', isn't that how the saying goes? I can appreciate enjoying hard work. Keeps you focused."[break][break]

But she blinks at the girls next question, peeling her eyes away from the wondrous view to gaze upon Iris' face with soft curiosity.[break][break]

"I'm a teacher. I educate the little ones specifically, help them get a grasp on the real world with patience and kindness. Sounds easier than it is."[break][break]

Another soft chuckle.[break][break]

"I teach at the Pokemon Academy in Lilycove city."

Thea can see the confusion in her response, the polite dip of her head that suggested that she didn't fully understand the sentiment or know enough to appreciate the answer she'd been given, but knew better than to be rude. It made her smile, and reminded her fondly of someone close to her. For a moment she almost seems wistful or far away, as if she's seeing someone else entirely standing in front of her.[break][break]

But the moment is fleeting and she gets to her feet as Iris suggests. [break][break]

"Yes, yes, we should. No sense coming all this way to give up when we've almost reached the top, right?"[break][break]

She reaches for her backpack and slings it between her shoulders before mentally preparing herself for the last stretch of the hike. It didn't even occur to her how she expected to find the strength to climb back down - if that was even the expectation.
