"water gun!" she shouts to blue, who lets out a stream of water over a cluster of flames before them. given the location, and the weather, it's spreading far too quickly for the rangers' liking.

she tries something more ambitious. "whirlpool!" blue holds his arms up, the whirlpool steadily forming above him, before he tosses it into the fire with a cry.

iris looks around at the other rangers, divided between subduing the fire and finding those who were responsible.

It hadn't been his idea to start setting fires in the Slateport park - he'd merely gotten himself caught up in some Rocket grunt antics. Apparently not everyone was pleased as punch to be kicked out of Slateport. Or maybe they didn't give a shit and they just wanted to start shit.[break][break]

Whatever the reasoning behind it, River is caught up in this mess somehow, as usual. And it turns out he's the last one to flee. He either didn't get the memo or he'd been too caught up hissing and cursing about the fresh burn he'd just received. Apparently handling flammable objects isn't his area of expertise. Who knew?[break][break]

The boy pats his hand on his jacket as he gets up to run. He can hear people approaching and water drowning out the roar of the flames. They had set fire to some of the older trees and the park benches. It had seemed like a good idea at the time, but not so much now.[break][break]

Now, he was in big trouble. And God damn, did his hand burn.

she breaks her gaze her a moment to call out some more orders. another WHIRLPOOL is thrown into the inferno. when she turns back, she notices the state of his hand. "it's burned." she says, though it comes out more like an accusation.

Panic sends what feels like an electric shock up the length of his arm as someone latches onto his wrist. Though he's grateful it was his wrist and not the length of his pinky where he'd burned himself - he's still startled. It's entirely possible he's yelped out loud.[break][break]

"Iris?"[break][break]

He sounds incredulous, surprised, even though their run-ins have almost always been happenstance like this. It's just a shame he's making such a fool of himself now. But at the same time, her concern is shocking, hitting him harder than he expected it to.[break][break]

"But I was just getting started."[break][break]

He chuckles, but there's a strain in his voice as he says this, because he knows he's in deep shit. Without her pulling him out of the crossfire he almost certainly would have been arrested.[break][break]

Sometimes he wonders if that would be better for him.[break][break]

As soon as they're out of the way he blinks at her as she stares at his hand. Her accusatory tone is not lost on him, but he responds with sarcasm.[break][break]

"Yeah, that's sort of what happens when you play with fire. Charming as always, Iris."

she doesn't want river caught--she knows, despite turning out for the better, that the first few weeks in custody had been hell for her. questions, accusations, and the underlying hatred of it all. still, she wouldn't be able to back him up if the rangers happened across them. this was her job, and these were their orders.

why they'd started the fire was not important to her, it was what came out of it.

River realises he's made a mistake when her eyes narrow and she lets go of his wrist. She pushes him and he stumbles backward, eyes reflecting the hurt from her action. [break][break]

'Let us do our job,' she says, as if this was what she wanted to do. As if he was an annoying bug standing in her way. It hurt.[break][break]

And so he cradles his injured hand to his chest and takes a step away from her, unsure what to say. His wit and charm was gone the moment she had reacted with frustration - he's at a loss for words. Though that isn't surprising when it comes to Iris.[break][break]

The boy hesitates for only a moment while her Marshtomp continues to battle the fire. But he eventually regards Iris with a wounded stare before attempting to make himself scarce.[break][break]

Hopefully it wasn't too late.

"wait." she reaches into her bag, digging round for the supplies she'd been given before they left. pulling out a tube of burn cream and some plasters, she pushes them into river's unharmed hand. "you should probably get that checked out."

She apologizes but he disregards it, because the River-puppy has already been kicked. [break][break]

But when something is pressed into his unharmed hand, River stiffens and turns on her. He retains his hurt expression, but his eyebrows are knotted together and he either pushes the burn cream back into her hand or drops it altogether.[break][break]

"Don't pity me, Iris. I don't need your help. I know this is all a display. You only give a shit if it makes you look better. I'm not interested."[break][break]

The words come out harsher than he intended, but he's a sensitive person and his reaction is knee-jerk. He doesn't mean it, not really. But what's said is said and he can't take it back. He doesn't want to. Not yet, anyway.[break][break]

He'd probably overthink this later, after he'd stormed off and mulled over it.

a group of rangers approach from the distance. iris runs to meet them halfway, to buy river some more time. despite what had just happened, she'd keep her word and give him a chance to flee. even if it was more than he deserved.
