 Amber light fell across the reddening October leaves, figure half-hidden by a fringe of willows beyond the trail as the trees seemed to tense away from the town, lifting their gnarled roots as if in eternal effort. Gleams of pale grass fell away in the foreground, with the bare branches looming on either side. At the farther end, a small pool mirrored the cat-tails waving and whispering among themselves in a kind breeze; and the sheer slope of pines at the path's end spilled into further shadow as they closed in the route save for a patch of pale sky.
