dahlia allows mateo to rage. to expel draconic breath and flames, forged from the blazing depths of his thorned den. his hoard must house diamonds. blackened if not charred. even the tarnished gem retains value should it be unique.

"oh, be careful of what you wish for!"

dahlia casts the mention of the year away, the gossamer of her traumas falling like bricks of paperwork in the forsaken distance.

"listen, mateo. i want to place my eggs in a select few baskets." dahlia says, quickly pulling a report from the paper stacks in her mental office. "hoenn plans on instating an official league. it's about time."

dahlia snaps her fingers, "and a man of your calibre, coming all the way from blackthorn... i've done my research, and i'd think you'd be a good fit for what we have planned." she keeps it relatively cryptic, despite the obvious context behind her words. "i'd love to endorse you. have your back. quite literally. we can stitch an insignia of the league on the back of your coat!"

her dratini accompanies her thrill with a immature chirp.

"a temporary promotion!"

dahlia says, fluttering the increments of garden from her fingers. although invisible, she still feels the tiniest crumb against her lily-white skin. "we're placing him in the champion's seat for now- and i know, i know. people would say, 'dahlia? he's part of devon corp... isn't that suspect?'"

she plays the fool, voice beating against the painted wall like a swan's wings taking flight. her head cranes forth. a pleasant smile.

"but! it's a good underdog story. he's gone through so much- and to see someone as respectable as him represent the region regardless of the mud and dirt he's slogged through is truly inspiring."

dahlia quilts her fingers together, sparing her two indexes which lead toward kyle. she points with them, bound quietly in that graceful ligature. as if on cue, her stoutland comes and snuggles his furry head on kyle's lap.

"and i believe we can do the same for you. make you a further inspiration. a poster boy for hoenn like kim cole-essam. erm, maybe not exactly like him." dahlia says. "and maybe not as a gym leader. in some other capacity, but we'll have to see... unless i'm asking too much of you?"

dahlia's ears ring from the extensive detail. nevertheless, she keeps her head, plucks the period from thomas' conclusion and tacks on the ribbon of her reply, "aaand we are so grateful for that famous benoit generosity."

thinking, she taps the bow of her small smile. she catches a thought. plucks it with finger as it slides off her bottom lip with a pop.

"actually, the training programs are a wonderful idea," dahlia says, "and what the gyms are supposed to be. in fact... we do have some openings in the forseeable future depending on the municipality..."

she grabs her knees, leaning forth as if to make room for the spreading of wings. the commissioner is no angel, no perfect porcelain production⁠—but with the innate intuition and practice of care, fortune has allowed her to easily draw others into the warmth of her flock. she wonders if she can draw thomas too. she thinks she already has.

"...do the programs go any further than classic battling techniques?"

luckily for mateo, dahlia is a practiced listener. unlike the dratini that playfully circles the dragonite's thick legs, she remains calm. she lets mateo's story flow to her like the calmest breeze.

this is nice. it feels genuine. far from the pretense of politics, mateo's rambling is an earnest unraveling. and here, dahlia feels like a lone child. not lost, but enamoured with the carousel horse before her, which galloped free from its bolted pole.

she laughs. "oh, throw more! believe me when i say you're more interesting than some of the keynote speakers i've had to listen to." dahlia rolls her eyes dramatically, her blond curl following the swing of her head.

the mention of a dragon king piques her interest; however, the familiarity of such a myth fades from her memory, if it were even there. but mateo's fire kindles a new belief in her.

"if you didn't already know, mateo-- is it okay if i call you mateo?" she continues. "our current champion stepped down. but we do have a temporary replacement... alexander stone."

dahlia returns the thumbs up, biting her tongue so that the tip extends past her lips.

"but maybe you can topple him." dahlia clasps her hands together with a crisp clap. a conniving look flashes across her face, as if she had been struck with a chess player's epiphany. "after all, i think you're quite deserving of an endorsement."

she doesn't drink much nowadays. the bottle lays forlornly- but only to her. still coddled within its fanciful wrappings, the kalosian wine is laid to rest. she'll open the wine for a celebration. one that is uncertain. unknown. and unscheduled.

"oh! i actually thought you wanted to see me." dahlia blinks, lashes bouncing from the slight surprise. laughter marks her recovery. "perhaps... there was a miscommunication. in any case, we can make the most of our good company."

she looks to him.

"that is, if i have reassured you enough for what has happened in the past."

"gym leaders can be appointed by the league- but more often, it is the municipality's duty." dahlia's hands knit together in stillness. "however, leaders can appoint their successors and stone suggested that you'd be a suitable replacement."

a spark of movement announces her shifting glance. her demure shade hardens with an assertive, knowing confidence. this is charisma, perhaps. or a seamy shift in costume.

"oh, i have." dahlia says about her correspondence with stone. "i'm one step ahead of you!" the tongue is restrained. she keeps it carefully posed behind her smile.

kyle asks a dangerous question. it's here, that her platform stands on the precarious political pillar. and yet, her heart compels her to commit the paranoid fault.

"i didn't say that." dahlia snakes. "from my experience... political dynasties harbor alarming consequences. they consolidate power. create a culture of selfish preservation." she is the one to beg now. not with her voice, but with her eyes. "and these dynasties make it oh so difficult for new talent⁠—new talent like you⁠—to shine through."

a beat.

"and that's why, i've told alexander to reconsider." dahlia teases.

"oh don't mention it." dahlia waves the gratitude away, fingers curling to grab secret wisps of it as he departs. "sadly, i won't be able to rest now... because of all the paperwork this will bring me. thank you, stone. thank you."

a theatric sigh parachutes from her mouth as she falls lazily on to her side. her face nestles softly into the warm nook of her elbow.

"oh, it is about time, isn't it?"

from her collapsed heap on the couch, the tired commissioner flutters her fingers goodbye.

her dratini finds a fondness in mateo's touch. an immediate attunement. as expected from a blackthorn draconid, she thinks. the commissioner wonders too, if she can tame the dragons around her.

as the cold water sinks into her shoes, dahlia shudders with an excitement. an excitement spawned from the smashing of elegance. of posture and poise. what worth was there living a life of absolute grace in a pokemon world? and yet, she takes mateo's gesture and walks ashore.

"oh, graham and i are close like this!" dahlia crosses her fingers to which the dratini affirms loudly.

with a hop onto shore, dahlia crosses mateo's path to shuffle over to a proper spot on the gravelly shore. brightly, she thanks him before mirroring the smacking of his cheeks. at a lower intensity of course, a gentler power. she pats her cheeks as if she were dabbing sunscreen.

"okay, okay!" dahlia raises her thin arms and grounds herself, her shoes squelching with lake water. her form isn't as loose. more crafted. stiff. like origami edges. "before we go on any further... i've wanted to ask you... mr. martinez, why do you train so hard when you have your dragons to fight for you?"

her immature dratini coils up in the shallows as the water cups its pale blue body.

dahlia's head leans back in a brief flourish of laughter. her warm hands are still around kyle's as if to anchor her to him should her bubbly giggle lift her away. as she returns, her blonde curls fall lazily across her cheeks.

she releases him and her hands settle quietly on her lap.

"you've built quite the reputation!" dahlia says. "don't you realize? people speak highly of you! and your dogs too."

she casts a quick look toward wilfred, her stoutland, who rests lazily in the kitchen. against the island, his massive back rises slowly like a moving mountain.

a lively swing returns her gaze back to him. "i've heard that you'll be taking stone's place as rustboro's gym leader?"

a light breath escapes her lips. a moment's hesitance before exposure.

"i confess... that when i came back and noticed three silphs occupying stations of power, admittedly, i became quite worried. and i still am! even with alexander's departure." she rubs her hands with the softest care, as if nursing a pulsing wound stretched around them. "in case anything happens... i just want to know that there are people who will take my side."

dahlia removes herself from her seat. slowly. a quiet glide to the corner of the coffee table, resting her rear there as she carefully moves to cradle kyle's hands.

should he choose to accept her gesture, kyle would find her soft hold to resonate gently with the pulse of nurturance. she leans forth, eyes balmy and natural in their glance.

"oh, don't feel bad! she laughs. "you see. i'm not quite sure if i do." dahlia quickly catches herself. "or if i have enough. and so, i suppose that i am trying to articulate that... i'm looking for an ally in you."

dahlia laughs, thin fingers spread wide over her brightly parted lips. cute. his concern is sweet to the taste, almost innocent in the way that it sounds, like spritely trills over the region's symphonic drama. yet, there is truth to his words. why is she out here? she's putting herself in danger yet again-- at least, many would say.

however, it wouldn't happen again. she gambled last time. this time, her heels dig a little bit deeper into the lake's sands. ripples mark her confident stance and echo across the surface like a proclamation.

"i can take care of myself quite well." dahlia says. her hand cups the side of her face. "contrary to popular belief- but that doesn't mean i can't get help."

before pursuing mateo, she throws one pokeball, casting a dratini out. the small dragon takes a reverent look at mateo's dragonite before squealing into splashes.

"oo! this water is cold!" she wades towards him, arms spread apart to balance herself. "anyway! one or two things you could show me... i'd love to know! and in return i'll i could owe you a favour, perhaps? maybe a sponsorship... an endorsement like they do in galar?"

dahlia's gaze falls. like a damaged feather abandoned by its bird, it drifts in sad swings before resting on the cold floor. it's a brief moment. a second of contemplation. she's unafraid to expose herself within this echo of trauma. nightmares still haunt her. menacing shadows thrown by the cursed candle of memory, flickering in devilish designs that render her limbs weak with the phantoms of a relationship lost and broken.

"i am fine. becoming fine." dahlia corrects herself. "sometimes, it is... difficult, but i'm getting help."

her eyes match his, bright and big with concern like the flowers of her garden. with the lightest sigh, dahlia mirrors kyle's comfort, crossing her long legs at a lazy angle.

"but are you okay?" dahlia asks. "do you have anyone to talk to about your experiences? a close friend, perhaps?" she weaves her fingers together and arches them like a church roof.

"i have to admit... ever since my return, it has been difficult to find people i can trust."

"oh you shouldn't have." dahlia cradles the box, setting it carefully on her blanketed lap. "i'm going to have to hunt that little fletchling down. exposing my number one weakness? unforgivable."

continuing to baby her bottle of wine, she listens calmly. it's an apology she's heard before from others, or from others delivered from others. she bobs her head up and down. the words from thomas' concessions lifting her chin in intervals like rolling logs.

at the end of thomas' formalities, she shakes her head quietly in small invisible discs. however, she's smiling. her grin is inspired by thomas' sincerity. his earnest supplicance and she responds in turn.

"oh, let the past be the past." dahlia says, feet planted firmly on the floor. "we can't change what's happened... as horrible as it was. don't fret, thomas. we're dealing with it. paperwork, media... it will all pass."

she sets the wine to her immediate side.

"i hope it's kalosian."

dahlia desires strength. and although she harbors the grit of resilience within her healing bones, her fragile form yearns for scabs and bruises. crests to toughen the skin. like the jewels of sweat securing mateo's strong body, she seeks to armor herself with the physicality of a survivor. nothing less. her mind is sharp. when unsheathed, her intuition strikes at others' hearts.

she tiptoes down a hill, careful not to skid clumsily down its unforgiving face. on her khaki shorts, smears of dirt and grass betray her amateur skills as a hiker. a pokeball bobs shakily on her waist.

waving widely, she announces her presence as her feet grace the lake's coast: "hello!! i never thought i'd meet a blackthorn gym leader here." she shouts to ensure she is heard over the raging waterfall.

with awe, the commissioner's eyes take in mateo's impressive physique and the fierce dedication of his pokemon underneath the beating sun. her eyes are full and colored with the bright shape of curiosity. an opportunity is here. she takes it, striding gracefully into the water's shallows.

"i have a favour to ask of you- as commissioner, or as a passing admirer. if you don't mind." dahlia says. "i couldn't help but notice... how strong you look. you could strangle someone with those arms!" she coos, drawing a golden curl behind her ear. "if you could teach me a thing or two about hand-to-hand, i'd sincerely appreciate it... mr. martinez."
