The boys are all clapping each other on the backs and gearing up to revel. The girls are mostly in their laps or being led off somewhere else in the name of getting to it. Atlas gets up to leave, and a hand catches them by the wrist. Its owner shoots them a familiar grin. They manage not to wrinkle their nose.

"Not right now, I'm gonna catch up with the Rocket stiff."

The hand lets them go, the grin replaced with a knowing smile.

"Oh fuck off," is all they offer in response before hurrying out the door and after the aforementioned stiff, who was giving the gang reason to celebrate no more than a minute or so ago.

The air is bracing. Goldenrod on an autumn night. The breeze runs right through the thin cloth of Atlas's tank-top and cuts at their mostly bare legs. A tug at their shorts offers only moderately better coverage.

"Hey! Wait up!" They yell after the man and kick into a jog to catch up to him.

Parker's inspection is mirrored by Atlas. They're happy they loosened up their appearance. They don't ever want to be thought to be one who does business quite so casually as Parker, but at least the gap between them was closed somewhat with their adjustment. Atlas hopes it's enough to keep them from seeming too odd.

The casual, pleasantry devoid introduction is noted as well.

"Atlas," they offer in return. A smile accompanies the exchange of names, easy and lopsided -- more a smirk than anything. Not too eager. Atlas lets themselves brighten a little more during the nod to Parker's companion.

"A quick day sounds perfect to me."

Then they're moving. Atlas is grateful that conversation will be accompanying their work. With that stellar greeting there was just no way of being sure before.

"Only a few weeks, came in from Goldenrod the tail-end of last month," Atlas replies, their grin coloring their words.

The submarine base feels a bit much to Atlas. Not that anyone's asking them, but the feeling is strong as they roam the halls listening to the sound of their flopping sandals echo off the metal interior. Underground, that was sensible. Simple. Underwater? It gives . . . Sunday morning supervillain.

Atlas's wanderings bring them to a stop in the cafeteria. Again, a giant sub with a cafeteria. Maybe it's not so much Sunday morning supervillain as billionaire excess. The branch flexing its wealth like it's the underworld's Silph equivalent. Whatever, they can't complain too much. It's free lodging ridiculous or not.

They're interrupted in their musings by a voice. Instinct tells them to whip around, but restraint keeps them from doing anything so embarrassingly jumpy. When they turn to meet the stranger calling to them it's slow and relaxed. Their hands naturally tuck into the pockets of their baggy sweats. They stand a little straighter and open their chest, pulling their red tank-top tighter to their bound chest.

"A sound?" They ask pleasantly, "Can't say I have. I get it though, the ambience down here . . . can lend your mind to playing games."

Speaking of staying the same, Atlas's appreciation of the scenery is interrupted by a rattling in one of the hollowed out hovels on the roadside. There's a hissing and a clattering and then out from the doorway pours a swarm of Zubat, Golbat, and a small pack of what she's fairly certain are Purrloin. A turf war of sorts seems to have broken out.

And like with any turf war, being there in its midst makes you a target. The tail-end of the stream of pokemon is comprised of the most battered, and just like with people their wounded pride and vulnerable bits make them anxious. Aggressive. The first Golbat that notices Atlas's presence hisses and more flings itself than flies in her direction.

Atlas whistles as she hops back, and the Golbat is knocked off course by a slightly larger one of the same. Physically beaten back by the full weight of Atlas's own Golbat, Skree. The poor, wild thing goes to get back up but is soon tumbling back to the ground. Confused on account of a SUPERSONIC Skree delivered on the tail-end of her body slam.

Between the wounds it has taken in the house and the new dizzy spell it's been gifted the raging Golbat is left practically helpless.

"Calm down, then. Your friends have all flown and your enemies are scattered. Let's make peace, yeah?"

Atlas speaks in honeyed tones as she approaches the pokemon anew and sits cross-legged before it. Of course it tries to lash out. She sees venom drip from its fangs as it turns and gnashes at the air to her right. It goes to swing at her with a wing but catches itself in the body instead before flopping down again. Skree hisses in warning.

"Enough of that. Peace from you, too," Atlas admonishes, clicking her tongue, "you've made your point; and you're going to be friends from here on. So get along."

With all the casual energy of an old woman petting a domesticated Meowth, Atlas presses a pokeball against the grounded bat. It vanishes in a flash of red light. From the rumbling of the ball it continues its fight within.

To be honest, Atlas was expecting more of a culture shock moving to Hoenn. The region isn't as warm as she was lead to believe, being Rocket seems to be the same just about anywhere, and Slateport? Well, if you trade boats for the magnet rail she may as well have never left Goldenrod. Nowhere is that clearer than the edges of the city.

Goldenrod had this same issue. As industry grew and more stores popped up in the center, around the mall and all the nice houses, the factories on the outskirts fell into disrepair and disuse. The hotspots sucked up all the infrastructure budget until the lower-income housing turned into no housing at all -- just condemned block into condemned block. It's sad, almost, but useful. Lots of places for gangs and hoodlums to hide. Plenty of empty husks to squat in. Slateport so far is just the same.

The cold of night wriggles under her jacket on the breeze and Atlas takes a deep breath; and there it is. She's home.

Smells just as much like shit and mildew in Hoenn as it does in Johto. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The chill of Shoal Cave is deep and penetrating. Even through two shirts, their suit jacket, and a peacoat; Atlas swears they can feel the cold nipping at their bones. When they exhale, their breath comes out a puff of haze. How does a tropical region manage to hide away little, frozen over hells like this?

"Grump, keep close," they order the Houndour at their side with a lopsided grin before looking over their shoulder at their partner for the day.

"You won't object to my girl keeping us warm, will you?"

The question is paired with a flash of teeth and a playful waggle of their eyebrows. A favor and some charm, as good an opening gambit as they've ever had to offer.

It hasn't been long since Atlas washed up in Slateport, but already it's beginning to feel like home. It's a lot like Goldenrod. Sprawling, choked by industry, and filled end to end with trouble. Trouble that, also like in Goldenrod, Atlas is more than happy to lay claim to causing about as often as they catch it.

Today is no exception. Or it's about to be, at least. This afternoon (not quite evening, which is rather the point) they're camped on a corner just outside the Night Market. Wonderful place full of wonderful people and wonderful wares. Also home to one person doing less-than-wonderfully making their protection payments who needs a stern reminder of what that means. That's where Atlas comes in.

This, too, is something they are accustomed to.

But before they can get to work they have to wait for their partner to show up! At least that's what it says in the message they have pulled up on their phone. Doesn't seem like much point in waiting, but it's not their place to ask questions. Not yet.

So instead they sit there preening. Tuck their phone in their pocket and get to work peeling their suit jacket off and rolling up the sleeves of their button-down. Loosening their tie a little bit.

First impressions are important, but so long as their partner is another grunt Atlas doesn't want to look too uptight.

Tis the . . . well, not the night before Christmas. The week? Tis the week before Christmas and all through the mall (not a house, too small a target, maybe this analogy is falling apart) there is not a thing stirring. Nothing but a mouse pokemon. The mouse pokemon, to be exact.

In the darkness of the mall a single Rattata creeps on silent feet. Only the occasional, lightest scratching of claws on tile reveals his position. The shine of a rare light on his reflective eyes. He moves with purpose; but one uncommon to his kind. For, it's not food court scraps or left-out popcorn from the movie theatre he's after.

Instead he squeezes underneath a glass door into a locked up electronics store; and he finds his way with practiced ease to a place behind the counter. There, already pre-wrapped, lie preordered goodies: phones, tablets, computer parts. All ripe for the taking and easily resold on the right market. Not by the Rattata of course, but we'll get to that.
