“Talia, Amaris,” Symon repeated, committing the names to memory. He watched her walk to him, dress robes billowing around her feet like some sort of air spirit. She was a very slight thing, but she had to be strong to get those massive layers of clothes to do anything besides slump.

He switched to stretching his other arm as he listened to Talia talk about her dance history, nodding along as she spoke. “Ecruteak, huh?” he said, wondering what kind of shows they did there; to be honest, she lost him at ‘traditional’ and he just sort of smiled politely at her.

“Oh, yeah, that’s perfectly fine,” Sy confirmed when Talia explained about her change in occupation. He slipped his hips side to side, stretching his lower abdominals and glutes. “Honestly, anyone with some experience would be good. Just having a fresh take on things is a bonus.”

Next were the leg stretches. “So what do you do for the League, Talia?” Sy asked, making casual conversation before getting into the nitty gritty of the thing.

Sy makes an apologetic face when Kyle jumps. “Sorry,” he says, setting his bowl down to reach for the cocoa powder container. He nods as Kyle does a pretty good impersonation of his technique-- though his desserts may come out a little flat, undoubtedly they’ll still taste good. It was hard to ruin chocolate.[break][break]

By means of explanation, he overshared: “My granny used to make cakes for church and we all got roped into helping her. She also watched a looooot of Food Network.” He didn’t want Kyle to think he was some sort of baking maestro come to flex on the other noobs. He just happened to know how to make a chocolate cake. Sort of.[break][break]

“Aw, doesn’t like sweets! Well, I’m sure he’ll like these,” Sy cheered. The instructor began to pour their batter into the cake molds; Sy did the same. [break][break]

He laughed when Kyle said he seemed like a kinda type, though didn’t really know if he meant the type to not be single, or the type to not like sweets. “Nah, just sort of got… roped in again. Single as a pringle. I was at the mall for work and the advertising did its job and got me to sign up, I guess.” He grinned. “I’m Symon.”

EACH DAY YOU WAKE UP WITH AN ACHING

Sy’s phone buzzed in his pocket and he fished it out with one hand as he pushed through the gym doors with the other. It was an alarm reminding him that he’d answered an ad to compose a contest routine for some fancy-shmancy coordinator. It was a nice little side gig he had when the Furretdales dancers were on standby, and though tickets were still selling out, their shows had been sliced to once a week following the burnout of the Valentines season.

So he cut down the street and walked the few blocks in his slides, tank top, and gym shorts, skin reddened and hair slightly damp from the shower. He was familiar with the place, having done a Valentines routine here not too long ago.

When he walked in, he saw a girl with pretty hair in funky clothes standing in the center of the room, talking to her Cleffa. “Hey!” he called, his voice booming around the empty room, startling a Starly in the rafters. “Sorry I’m late. Lost track of time. I’m Symon.” He dropped his gym bag and stretched his arms behind his head, grabbing one elbow and pulling across to get into his shoulders and upper back. He was still sore from his workout. “So, you’re a dancer?” It was an innocent question, meant to get a brief grasp on her backstory, and what experience she had. Bollywood, maybe.

Sy thought the stranger looked kinda cute, all reddened and roughed up-- like a tomato that rolled too far away from the garden, his grandma used to say; usually she said it about him looking too uncouth for church, but it hey, it stuck. [break][break]

“It doesn’t look half bad,” Sy said, completely oblivious to the hidden spines in nagi miwa’s voice; and he was earnest, too. “I probably couldn’t do half that in twice the time. Actually it never even occurred to me to make a shelter.” But it was a good idea that dawned on him now as he turned and looked out at the open sea, empty and unyielding of her secrets. Sy ran a hand through his hair and laughed. “Seems like it,” he confirmed with a shrug, “but, knowing me, it was probably in the fine print and I just didn’t read it.” He didn’t think much past the surface of a lot of things, so it never occurred to him for a company or organization to have sinister plans. Especially not one that would pay him. [break][break]

“I’m Symon,” he said, holding out a hand for the bedraggled stranger to shake. “Oh, this is Vermillion. Sorry, Verm,” he added after the Comfey hassled him with an indignant squeak. [break][break]

Symon was in the building doing an advertisement for a clothing chain’s upcoming swim line and was treated to an on the house green juice for his time. Job completed, he took the opportunity to explore the mall, trendy juice drink in hand, mostly keeping on the lookout for other ads with his face in them. It was a favorite pastime of his. [break][break]

He was passing a small confectionary when a girl handing out flyers at the front door caught his attention. “Join a valentines baking class and whip up some sweets to impress your boo!” she said, offering him a piece of paper advertising the class, plus a 25% off discount on chocolates post-completion. “Only a few spots left open!” [break][break]

Sy shrugged his shoulders and shelled out the entrance fee, taking his place at an open station as the class began. He didn’t eat sweets a whole bunch, as demonstrated by his diamond-cut physique and choice of avocado-power green combination juiced beverage, and he didn't have a quote-unquote 'boo', but he enjoyed learning, and was of a mind that there was nothing he wasn't good at. Everyone was given a complimentary apron with the store’s logo on it and listens intently as the instructor goes through the steps. [break][break]

He sees the guy to the left of him sort of falter a bit. “You’re doing great,” he says, flashing him a thumbs up. “Just keep mixing until the mixture is pale. Then you fold in your chocolate.” He follows his own advice, tilting the mixing bowl up to get the best whisking angle. [break][break]

"Making these for someone special?" he asks, to make polite conversation. [break][break]

They’d been looking for an individual to star in their tourism campaign and Sy had signed up off the gun without reading much of the fine print. He’d showed up at the location, posed for the photos, and then been totally surprised when they’d shoved a ferry ticket in his hand and spirited him away to the docks. A short boat trip and a brief goodbye later, Sy was unceremoniously deposited on a hot, sandy beach, in the same trunks used for the promotion images and staring blearily at the catches in his contract currently condemning him to such a divine hell. [break][break]

Scant belongings crammed in an old gym bag, Sy calls out Vermillion for company; he and his Comfey stare at the watery horizon till his eyes blur. Luckily for him, his frequent trips to the Lilycove Beach have left his skin burnished bronze, so the lurking threat of sunburn isn’t as offensive as maybe with someone less used to flexing on a beach all day. [break][break]

Still, it’s lonesome, and there’s got to be more to see than the waves endlessly undulating against the shore. Bag in hand, toes in the sand, Sy picks a direction and treks. [break][break]

It isn’t long until he finds something interesting. [break][break]

A patchwork, spartan lean-to, wobbling like a toddler with a full bladder during a preschool talent show, and a very tired, slightly reddening individual looking over it as though it were his life’s work. He has a candle on his shoulder instead of the proverbial chip. [break][break]

It’s the only other sign of life Sy’s seen in the few hours since the boat abandoned him here. [break][break]

“That’s nice,” he says, gesturing to the lean-to, tone suggesting he tried really hard to find something positive to say about the stranger’s work, half-joking and half-earnest. “Take you all day to do that?” [break][break]
