A wince briefly tightens Beau's features as the radio switches on, the sudden shriek of heavy metal causing the Togepi to immediately wriggle restlessly in his arms, screaming shrilly. He quickly schooled his face back into a kind of warm neutrality, and despite the murmured expletive from the direction of the radio, he was rewarded with the volume reducing itself to a much more acceptable level.

He rocked the Togepi gently as it settled down again, and, catching Klaus's look, he offered a self-satisfied grin. Cool, calm, and collected, that was Beau; he couldn't bring any more stress or anxiety to the party, because he had two touchy kids to keep level, after all.

When the howling of the heavy metal is abruptly shifted to the soft strains of classical music, the Togepi yelps again, and Beau blinks, peering at Klaus until the other man flips it back. As soon as the discordant guitar riffs explode from the speakers once more, the Togepi closes its eyes, burrowing against Beau's chest contently.

Blinking incredulously, Beau looks to Klaus and offers a one-shouldered shrug. "Kid knows what he likes," he rumbles.

The Applin, meanwhile, dives for cover under the loose pile of trimmings that he and Froakie had made for themselves at the first assault of the heavy metal music. Tapping from his companion's webbed hand brings him to the surface, where he happily wiggles into the bubble-forged headphones, seeming to sag with relief as the horrible sound is blocked out.

Beau nodded agreeably as they set off, following Jack and listening to his explanation. "Yeah," he mused at the notion of activity in Dewford, "I haven't seen much going on out here since those Kyogre nutjobs."

A wide grin stretched across his features as Jack admonished him, and he elbowed the shorter man in the ribs good-naturedly as they approached the shoreline. "Just teasin', brah!" He laughed. "It looks like you're doin' good for yourself, is all. In your element, kinda, know what I mean?"

His smile turned thoughtful at Jack's question, and he tilted his head slightly as he considered. "Well, yeah. Me an' the boys have been trainin' hard still," he commented, doubtless referring to Torben and Nemo, his two closest companions. "I couldn't get far from the woods, really, so I spent a lot of time explorin' and learning about the local ecology. Y'know, plants and stuff," he added, as though Jack might have trouble understanding what 'ecology' meant.

He stretched his arms upward, releasing a crick in his shoulders, and offered a satisfied grunt. "I guess more than anything, I haven't had a lot of experience with getting out there in the real wilderness, yeah? There's a ton of land that people don't ever really get to on their own, and I feel like I'd be kinda up a creek myself if there weren't any roads around."

"Whoa, trippy," Beau commented as the simulation took hold, wincing as his first introduction to the RKS system was an errant gust of wind that blew a spray of sand directly into his face.

Opting to remove himself from the assault of a foe he could not possibly hit back effectively, Beau oriented on Jack and followed him into the tomb quickly, dusting himself off and taking in his surroundings, blinking. "You got me, brah," he shrugged, bending down to examine the floor. "They said they were creating a great protector, is it just the building? I guess that would be pretty good at protecting stuff."

Eyeing the purple stone suspiciously, Beau rose and approached behind Jack as the latter began to reach for it, furrowing his brow. "Yeah, no, it looks almost like it was...made that way?"

The Great Chasm had been a flurry of activity over recent weeks, and fortunately for Beau, his trainee activity in the Rangers had put him on the League's radar once again. He may not have had tenure in the new system, but he at least had his feet under him, and the League was apparently fighting too many fires at once to handle everything with the usual suspects.

Thus, Beau found himself pulled from his quiet little corner in Dewford to assist with what they hoped would be a recon mission: a handful of researchers had gone missing in one of the cave systems near the Chasm's entry point, and they were sorely missed.
[break][break]
Beau stretched idly as he waited in the entryway of the research station nearest the cave in question, glancing about as white-coated researchers scurried this way and that, muttering words to one another that he really couldn't have translated if he'd wanted to. Too many technical terms for his liking, and he'd never done that well in his science courses.

He did know that he was supposed to link up with a more experienced partner - Gray, maybe? - so that's what he waited on, doing his best to step out of the way here and there as researchers darted past, because even though he had some not-so-bright moments, charging headlong into a cave by himself did not rank highly on the List Of Smart Things To Do.

The smallest of smirks twitches at the corner of Beau's lips as Klaus, flustered, passes the Togepi off to him. Turning his head to hide it from the shorter man, he makes shushing noises at the egg-bound pokémon he finds himself holding, bouncing it gently as it rouses from its calm.

"There there, little dude, chillax," Beau soothes the Togepi, wiggling a finger in front of its face. The pokémon blinks, nearly going cross-eyed to follow the large fingertip proffered to it, and abandons its fussing in favor of stretching its tiny arms upward, attempting to grab on to the offending digit.

Beau glances to Klaus with a winning grin. "See? No problemo. Is there a radio around here anywhere? Some tunes might help the little guy go to sleep while we wait on the 'rentals, feel me?"

In the corner, the Applin is utterly delighted by the architectural prowess of his new acquaintance, shuffling through an arch and then turning to scoot back through again, wiggling his tail delightedly.

Blueberries, huh? He thought he'd just got some from the store earlier this week, but he'd better make sure. Beau crossed to his fridge, one foot almost sliding out from under him as he moved through the puddle by the door. "Yikes. Hey CHAOS! What'd you do with that mop, little brah?" He called into the living room. After a moment of shuffling, Chaos came trotting sullenly into the kitchen, nosing into a corner and causing a wooden mop to fall over and smack the opposite counter from the collection of cleaning implements stacked haphazardly there.

"Oh, sweet," Beau commented, lifting his eyebrows as the mop presented itself. Chaos turned a satisfied circle before curling up in the middle of the floor, and Beau negotiated around him carefully as he began to clean the water from in front of the door. As Chaos begin to snore, Beau's thoughts wandered - he wondered what kind of movie Klaus would bring, because he didn't really know the other man's film preferences. Not that Beau was much of a screen buff himself, but...

A loud crack of thunder caused the lights in the apartment to flicker, and suddenly the entire space was plunged into darkness. Through the pitch-black of the kitchen, Beau could hear the rain pouring outside and the Snubbull's uninterrupted snoring from his spot on the kitchen floor.

Despite the circumstances, he couldn't help but smile in the dark. He had a breakfast to look forward to.

Collecting his fallen groceries from the floor was the work of a few short moments, and Beau busied himself unloading his purchases onto the counter while he most definitely did not wait with a slight flutter in his chest for Klaus's response to his breakfast invitation.

Some fruits and vegetables were to be expected, but today's haul also included flour, milk, eggs, and chocolate-peanut-butter protein bars - purchased the first time because they were protein bars and purchased all subsequent times because it turned out they were just plain tasty. The groceries went into storage with little fanfare, and then his pocket buzzed again.

A broad grin split his face, and he pumped his fist in the air with a "Hell yeah!", prompting an irritated huff from Chaos in the next room.

The barking should have been Beau's first clue, but as his eyes adjusted to the less aggressive light of the station's fluorescents, it was the sight of the lanky man rising from the desk that had his cheeks hurting in a disbelieving smile. "Jack! Watts! No freakin' way, brah!"

He thumped Jack on the back, giving him a friendly squeeze for good measure, before crouching slightly to scritch Watts behind the ears. The questions were coming faster than he could process, and it was with a good-natured laugh that he followed Jack back outside. "Moonlighting in Petalburg, but yeah, better now!" he offers in response to the first two inquiries at once.

"My uncle wasn't doing so hot, so I had to drop some stuff and take care of him," he explained, a slight frown wrinkling his brow. "Not gonna front, it wasn't looking good for a while, but I guess the woods did him some good, 'cause he finally got the doc's stamp of approval a couple months back!"

He nodded eagerly, absently running a hand through his hair as he flashed an eager grin. "Totally, brah! All that time in the country just kinda got my wheels turnin', y'know? There's a lot of stuff goin' on lately, and if I can help keep people an' pokemon safe, feels better than sitting at home for sure!"

He bent over to pat Watts solidly against the flank once more, then stood up and squared his shoulders. "So, what first, Mister Jack Sir?"

Beau finished the apple in another three bites as he waited for Klaus to respond, though not before breaking off a chunk of soft flesh that he tossed to Chaos. The Snubbull snapped the treat up eagerly with wheezy panting, turning in a quick circle before trotting off further into the apartment, apparently satisfied.

An insistent crick in Beau's neck alerted him to the fact that he was, in fact, still lying on the floor. With a groan, he hoisted himself slowly to his feet, brushing the water from the back of his shorts futilely before his phone buzzed.

The response was almost enough to dampen his spirits, and he started writing back reflexively.
