He explains. Quite thoroughly, in fact. Just not what Lorelei wants to hear.

It's hard to tell if he's simply skirting the obvious, biding his time before playing his cards behind a metaphorical wall of tauros meat and a literal one of velvet, or if he'd really believed that this was what she had meant. For as fond as she was of placing “big words” in her vernacular and weaving together sentences she believed to sound eloquent (modeled after a character she'd admired in her youth, unstoppable, powerful, vile, and every bit the villain), the Rocket was laughably terrible at reading a face or the intentions locked away behind it. Unsure of whether to immediately press her point or not, though, she finally takes her seat, icy stare never flickering away from his face as she settles neatly into place.

The explanation, fortunately, is not without its merits. She certainly wouldn't have understood at least the bit about flipping over her card.

“Did you memorize the information pamphlet ahead of time just for me?” More likely, this wasn't his first time dining here, alone or in the company of someone else. Still, Lorelei is frustrated, and she'll deadpan barbs as long as she'd like until the sting of it goes away – or until Mr. Silph decides to open his mouth to say something worthwhile. Whichever comes first. “I do wish I could say I was impressed.”

“The more they isolate you, the safer you are.”

It's always strange to hear him speak that way, honed onto the idea of “what is best” and “where it's safe”; not uncharacteristic by any means, no, but something exclusive only to him. Sometimes, it feels like he thinks she's constructed from glass: ready to bend, break, burn. After so long without him, left alone to her thoughts and her delusions of being hard as iron, sharp as steel, stopped by no man or monster, the notion that she need take any precision to remain “safe” is... jarring. If she had participated in the battle for Slateport, she would have either lived or she would have died. Black, white, crystal clear and cut. Safety hadn't crossed her mind then, and it hardly seems important now when he's stood before her in the eye of his personal storm.

Lorelei steps aside to let him in first, falling into her more appropriate role as his shadow than his guide. Without looking her way, he describes the cut of midnight sirens through the silence of night – stakes that differed from those in times perhaps more simple – and, as he finally turns to look her way, a desire to have done more. He had fought for the League, against his former captors. She tells him simply: “You're alive.” By all means, between the amount of destruction wrought and the vendetta the organization has against him in particular, he shouldn't be. “Next time. You'll do more next time. It will be enough.”

Nikolai reaches out to brush away her hair, and Lorelei jerks in instinct, body wrenching itself no more than a fraction of an inch away at his hand's sudden vicinity, caught between the need for flight and the knowledge that this man, at least, will not harm her. It's more telling than anything she can say. An apology hangs on her tongue, but she hasn't the strength to put it into words.

“... Not so much, these days. I do as I am told. They've stopped finding reasons for fault.” Some had taken longer than others, but everyone comes around eventually, particularly when their target was the scapegoat rather than the target of their ire. The worst had not been their wrath, though – the worst was the space he had left in his departure, the isolation meant to keep her “safe”. She swallows the thought like bile, focusing herself instead on righting a toppled chair and holding it out for him to sit. The room is near pitch with its lack of windows. Eyes can adjust more quickly, however, than a traitor caught in the spotlight. “It's not a cause for concern.”

That he had chosen to spend his time committing petty destruction of property had not been a surprise. That his reaction to her comment on its worthlessness had been to make a threat had not been a surprise, either. When he laughs, though, head thrown back and generator-lighted museum echoing emptily at the sound of it, she's admittedly caught a bit off guard. It's likely at her expense – a grown woman admitting to having nothing better to do with her day than poke her nose where it doesn't belong – but she's not so much bothered by it as she's wrong-footed. It's rare she feels much of anything, but even rarer that she admits to feeling caught off guard. “You're really superior, you know that?” he says, stark contrast to the mirth that usually accompanies a hearty chuckle. “But you're just another animal on a leash like me.”

A nail struck dead center on its head. He would probably say that to anyone standing in her shoes, Lorelei supposes, but the chord it strikes with her situation in particular sets a certain grimace in the line of her mouth. “Perhaps,” she concedes. “I see no reason, however, why a caged animal should discard its pride. All things break loose eventually.”

Her leash isn't held by who he thinks it is; maybe she'd be wise to not prod the topic any longer than she has to.

Fortunately, he's quick to leap the gap between topics without much prompting. For a man quick to toss out vile stories of tearing weaker women to shreds, he seems even quicker to switch his game from intimidation to being companionable; a tap of his hand against the table he's claimed as his thrown and an offer of caramels he's “pretty sure haven't been poisoned”, and he genuinely expects her to comply. (Fortunately for him, she's a woman with nothing better to do – unfortunately, she's also a woman who likes to hear herself speak.)

“A tempting offer – although, why should I take a seat when there are coupons in such desperate need of clipping? You'll have to do better than a bad of Schrodinger's poisoned caramels.”

If asked, she would claim she accepted only on the basis of a meal free of charge.

Crime, as the old saying goes, does not pay, after all, her dog's work for humanity's personified filth hardly keeping her belly full and her head shielded from the rain. A burger – no strings attached – would be a welcome gift, loathe as she is been to admit it. Dinner at one of Hoenn's most esteemed restaurants, which wasn't to say anything of the ludicrous price tag it came with is something that a beggar wouldn't dare to ask for. That she's being offered it now, so suddenly, without preamble or explanation is like something out of a dream (or, at the very least, a very poorly constructed romance film plot).

It is precisely because it's like something out of a dream, however, that she does not trust it for a single moment. Strange men offering wining and dining at the Chama Noodlina without so much as a “why” screams of fraud, the only missing nail in the coffin that he failed to pry for further information in his extended invitation. Bank name, home address, credit card numbers. The fact that he has managed to get into contact with her at all is something of a mystery. There are simply too many hoops for a simple scammer to bother trying to jump through when the elderly could be swindled for more with far less effort; she's been singled out, no doubt, but for what purpose, Lorelei can't begin to fathom. Because she's Rocket? Perhaps – but unlikely. There are far more influential poster children to make a bloody symbol out of, even if she, herself is no stranger to innocent blood on her hands. Because of her attachment to Nikolai? A better bet, but a shaky one at best. Only fellow members of Rocket know about that attachment at all, and certainly not the full extent of her devotion. No one has seemed bothered by it enough to do anything about it so far. By now, she's assumed the prime time to take any method of revenge has already passed.

That means that the only way to know for certain is to take the bait. Call it overconfidence – call it nonchalance toward death – but she does not fear.

The woman is clearly under-dressed, sporting not even the most lavish articles of clothing in her closet when taking her first steps into a building that had no business being carved entirely out of high priced stone. Even attempting to “dress to the nines” would have made her look out of place, she supposes. Simply thinking about the bill at the end of a night here would reduce any lower man's brain to mush. She's grateful, at least, that the waiter is swift to stifle the look of appall that crosses his features, and even swifter to lead her through a tangle of dazzling décor and Lilycove's richest at the mere mention of the name on their reservation. Red velvet curtains and all greet her at her destination: but to a man named “Silph”, this entire debacle must be little more than pocket change.

“Mr. Silph.” It's not a question. There is no doubt of who sits before her now, teasing a glass of what looks to be wine. No, no, the doubt lies in everything else regarding this meal-out-of-the-blue. Lorelei doesn't like to waste time. She hasn't even sat down when she asks (demands), “Care to explain?”

They must have been some sight, the pair of them: one supposedly caught red handed, but both looking rather dull, if anything. The childish antics of some of the other Rockets were ignored with far more grace when she was a younger member, though they've come to grow more tiresome as the years have passed, even if her unchanging outward expression would never betray the change in thought. She takes her job very seriously. Appalling how many people don't seem to feel the same, beyond a baseline need to avoid having their head removed from their shoulders. Some days, she's tempted to do something similar, regardless of whether or not they're stepping out of their neatly crafted lines; anything to satiate the boredom, the irritation, the feeling that she's been left behind -

“You got anything better to do than stick your nose in my business?”

“No.” Immediate. Unashamed. If she did, she certainly wouldn't be entertaining him now. At their very core, her orders had been to “shut up and wait”, albeit in a very particular location. What she did in her time, aside from ensuring that control over the waste did not slip out of the organization's fingers was very much up in the air. Lorelei never knew what to do with her free time. She wasn't use to having it at all.

He sat. He spoke: of dolls, of coupon clippings, of their supposedly nasty company. Had she been a green, bright-eyed novice stepping out on her adventure for the very first time, unmarked by Rocket's vile emblem, perhaps she would have been moved by his words and the harsh imagery they evoked. Instead, she scoffs. “You bark loudly for a dog that bares no fangs.” Assuming he had any to bare at all. From here, he looks like the sort of boy to be snapped in two by a wind too harsh – by hands like hers, unforgiving and immovable. (At the same time, though, she's seen larger mountains toppled by smaller men; she doesn't place herself above him for risk that he may pull the rug from beneath her feet.) “The lot of you look hard pressed to tear a slip of paper in two, much less 'the hair from my head', as you so boldly claim. Has your victory over the city made you complacent?”

Spoils of war she did not fight for – hardly would have cared to claim, even if she had. Slateport had been a droll city before Team Rocket had ever set their ugly foot in it, incapable of capturing her interest or even a second glance, but her superior's word was to be taken as law (it's safer this way, spoken from lips who knew from experience, don't follow me this time), and it was their command that she keep tabs on their freshly claimed territory... even if it was in shambles. Especially if it was in shambles.

Patrolling the area and keeping eyes peeled for any suspicious activity was a task to be carried out by all, but often forgone by the unhappy youth drunk on the idea of action and tired of the idea of the aftermath of it. At the very least, no one seemed to be scrambling from their precious little hidey-holes at the sight of light toward the sea-soaked outskirts of town, nor did anyone seem to wonder what its source may be when the power plant had been unceremoniously put out of commission. It couldn't have been electrical, Lorelei figured; the only natural conclusion was that it was from a Pokemon. More specifically, a trainer that was either playing in poor taste – or a threat who was trying to send a signal.

(Perhaps the youth weren't the only ones drunk on the idea of action, after all.)

Sure enough, the museum was awash with light. Tragically, a single step inside proved that the cause was not a Pokemon that needed to be beat into submission. “Color me impressed. I wouldn't have thought a backup generator would still be running so late after the fireworks.”

The building, however, was not entirely without a culprit – further in the back, almost obscured by toppled boat models and stands coated in fresh graffiti stood a dark-haired figure blowing bubbles with his gum and carving his mark in a place that may never be liberated. If a tree fell in a forest with no one to hear, did it fall at all? If a boy carves images into wood whose owner never return to see, did he ever ruin it at all? Lorelei levels him with a flat stare, the look of a disgruntled parent who has scolded their child ten times too many in a single afternoon, and regrets her call the moment it falls from her lips: “Haven't you got anything better to do?”

How long has it been? It feels like an eternity since she has last heard his voice or seen his face properly (a year, logic tells her, and barely more than that), and behind a facade of steel, there's a hint of relief. Obviously he had not forgotten her, as part of her had feared he would, seeing as he'd been the one to call this rendezvous together, spurred on by the destruction running rampant around them, no doubt. “It's good to see you, too,” he says, like she'd said it first, or said anything at all; maybe telepathy isn't limited to Pokemon kind after all.

“Clear now, yes, but that may not remain true for long. I've sent my Murkrow to keep surveillance. Any step to keep your location here a secret is one worth taking.” Lorelei won't stand to see him wait. Lorelei won't stand to see him caught. They really ought to have met in a place not crawling with other Rockets – but then, she's never been the one to call the shots, and she would never think to argue.

Still, his comment on privacy is agreement enough. She makes for the office in question, hidden behind a makeshift maze of displaced furniture and zig-zagging walls meant to confuse wayward children in the days when the light bulbs still burned overhead. It's the least obvious of them all – not the first, not the last, and just spacious enough to fit them both and many money, had they need for it.

“Twenty minutes ago,” the woman says first before she's come to a full stop. But maybe he didn't mean here, as in the hospital; maybe he meant: “... The day after. I do not believe they trusted me enough to station me here when it mattered. Credit to my connection to you, no doubt.” Treating her 'well' was a laughable idea by its lonesome; they paid only enough to keep her fed and roomed, and in turn, she did as asked, and only just. All she offers him in response is a curt nod of the head, twisting the knob and and pulling open the door – then she pauses in its threshold, catches his eye, and dares to ask what she's been thinking ever since they sent her to this filth-ridden city.[break][break]
