Shivering, Yumi pulled her raincoat tighter around her body. She had not expect to encounter Pokémon of legend while traveling along Route 119, but there they were, before her very eyes: Latios and Latias. [break][break]

The Latias seemed sick, though, the Toxic Chain growing from its body the likely culprit. Yumi hurried toward the Pokémon, releasing her Comfey. [break][break]

"Can you do something for it, Hanawa?" she asked the Fairy-type. [break][break]

With a chirp, the Comfey attempted to use FLORAL HEALING on the Latias. Yumi watched, an uneasiness growing in her stomach. She felt like she was going to be sick. [break][break]

Mumbled chanting drew Yumi off the main path through Rusturf Tunnel. As she drew closer, she saw the source: several humans engaged in worship of three strange-looking statues. [break][break]

Are those Pokémon? she wondered, propping her hands on her hips as she continued watching. [break][break]

One worshiper near the back of the ground noticed her and scrambled to his feet. But instead of a coherent sentence, he began frothing at the mouth as he lunged toward her. [break][break]

"Ew! Stay back!" Yumi screamed, throwing a Pokéball in the man's direction. Her Pheromosa emerged, lashing out with a devastating HIGH JUMP KICK at his chest. [break][break]

Seeing the aggressive attack, the other worshipers rose up and tried swarming Yumi and her Pokémon. The Ultra Beast snatched up its mistress in its arms and dashed away down the tunnel. [break][break]

When Mei Liu originally mentioned that she was venturing into the new Area Zero on some business for Team Rocket, Yumi had no intention of following her there. She was busy setting up her new restaurant in Slateport City, after all. [break][break]

But eventually, curiosity got the best of Yumi, and she soon found herself traversing the Tera crystal-studded tunnels of the subterranean maze. [break][break]

A terrible ruckus from around a bend drew the woman's attention. She gestured for her shiny Delphox, Yuuyake, to go ahead. [break][break]

The sight that greeted them was not what Yumi had expected at all. Purple, chain-like growths protruded grotesquely from the hammers of several Tinkaton that were in the midst of brutalizing some humans. [break][break]

Humans wearing the red "R" patch of Team Rocket. [break][break]

"Help scare off those Tinkaton, Yuuyake!" Yumi hissed. Her Delphox glided forward, wielding his wand. A FLAMETHROWER burst forth, engulfing the hostile Pokémon and forcing them to flee. [break][break]

Yumi had heard of the strange outbreaks of aggressive Pokémon throughout the region, but she never expected to be caught in the middle of one while traveling through Jagged Pass. A pair of Sneasler accosted her on the trail, claws and fangs bared. [break][break]

"What a nuisance," she grumbled, her MANICURED hands plucking two Pokéballs from her belt and tossing them forward. [break][break]

Her Starmie and Gothitelle emerged in flashes of light. "Take care of these," she ordered. [break][break]

Blasts of PSYCHIC from both Pokémon quickly subdued the Sneasler. Yumi tossed a third Pokéball, an empty one, in an attempt at capturing one. [break][break]

Yumi had heard of those same robotic Pokémon from her friends Mei Liu and Alexandra Briarwood, both of whom had been assigned to help with the excursions into the Giant Chasm and Area Zero. A part of her wished for one for herself, but she was too busy with her everyday work to venture into that danger zone. [break][break]

"Maybe," she said to Rhys, "but I'm not an expert on other dimensions or even Pokémon in general." [break][break]

They wandered through the building, which looked to be some kind of factory. Many rooms had conveyor belts and other machinery designed to assemble objects, though they were nonfunctional. Upon closer inspection, the objects seemed remarkably similar to the mechanized Pokémon she'd encountered there before. [break][break]

"With the number of Ultra Beasts prowling around these places, you're absolutely right about weapons," Yumi said as they passed through yet another chamber. [break][break]

"Everyone I know is accumulating these powerful Pokémon. Even my bodyguard, who didn't used to like Pokémon back when we lived in Johto." [break][break]

Much to her surprise, the room had an assembly lines that still worked. She paused near the doorway, watching with interest to see what the machine was in the process of making. After a moment, she recognized them. [break][break]

Tsareena. Mechanical Tsareena with blades for legs. A half-dozen were already complete, and they turned their heads to stare at Yumi and Rhys. The small hairs on the back of the woman's neck stood on end as alarm bells rang in her head. [break][break]

"Run," she commanded Rhys, just as the squad of Tsareena lurched into swift motion in their direction. [break][break]

🗺️ SPECIAL HUNT: Yumi Hasegawa and Rhys Collins will be able to encounter a VOLCANION that can speak. You must win its trust in some way, for it is wary of humans due to an unknown reason, but perhaps related to the events that have transpired in this kingdom a long time ago.[break][break]

It guards several SOUL-HEARTS that it is attempting to repair. It will manage to repair one Soul-Hearts by chance as it transfers some of its INFINITY ENERGY to it, shortening the Volcanion's life. The Volcanion is doing this in an attempt to find the MAGEARNA it had sworn to protect a long time ago, believing itself to be the last surviving "knight" of the royal guard.[break][break]

Bringing one SOULLESS MAGEARNA to the Volcanion will allow Yumi Hasegawa to open a hatch on the Magearna's chest to install the Soul-Heart in order to grant it "life", which then can be captured.[break][break]

Instead of a MAGEARNA, you may encounter and catch a STAKATAKA that has managed to displace itself here. Whether it is here from Hoenn or another location in ULTRA SPACE is unknown.

Once more, Yumi used the primal crystal in Team Rocket's possession to traverse into the Mechanical Kingdom. Her companion for the expedition, however, was a man she did not know. He had introduced himself as Rhys Collins, a pharmacist. [break][break]

"It's like one of our regions, but the technology uses strange mechanisms," she explained to him as they passed through the rift, finding themselves in an unfamiliar building. The intricate, clockwork design of the interior immediately emphasized her point. [break][break]

"The Pokémon are similar, and they don't seem to have any souls. But they're still highly dangerous," she continued, opening one of her Pokéballs to release her Shadow Tsareena. Kaoru had traveled through the realm before and was familiar with its creatures. [break][break]

Yumi then took out her phone and started taking photos of their surroundings. "So, what's your interest in this place, Rhys?"

Yumi's eyes grew wide as the machinery of the door whirls and unfolds, revealing the study beyond. She knew better than to rush inside for further investigation, however, and gestured for her Shadow Tsareena to go first. [break][break]

After searching the chamber and finding the portal, Yumi turned to Nikkari. "How many of these rifts into this Mechanical Kingdom do you think there are?" [break][break]

She contemplated the glowing entryway and the familiar sight of Hoenn just beyond it. [break][break]

"I guess we'll have to come back to find out," she decided, without waiting for her companion to answer. With a confident stride, she stepped through the portal and found herself back on home soil.

Yumi glanced down at the closest pile of remains. "I saw something similar the last time I was here," she said, recalling how she and DESIREE BLOOMS teamed up their Phione against one such mechanized creature. [break][break]

The woman lifted her gaze to their surroundings. Though the building was primarily stone, intricate clockwork formed complex decorations on the furniture, windowsills, crown molding… even the staircase banister. But more than that… [break][break]

"They're everywhere, Nikkari. The mechanical designs," Yumi realized as she continued to look around with a more discerning gaze. "Could it be the technology of this world?" [break][break]

The other doors in that chamber had strange contraptions set into them instead of ordinary locks. Curious, she approached one. An empty, cog-shaped space occupied the center of the door's mechanism. [break][break]

Below it, fragments of metal lay scattered across the floor tiles.

Yumi shrugged, not caring if MARILYN HASEGAWA took an interest in Sen or not. "I have a feeling that if you tried to avoid her, she'd come looking for you." [break][break]

Despite their grandmother's genial demeanor during their recent first meeting, Yumi had a hunch that Marilyn knew exactly how to get what she wanted from people. Women with their lifestyle did not live long without a certain measure of cunning. [break][break]

"In any case, why bother resisting? It's just a meeting." Yumi took a sip of her water. "It's not like Grandmother is going to ask you for a test of loyalty." [break][break]

She was less certain of that, though. Hasegawas placed huge importance on loyalty, until they didn't.

Yumi's eyes lit up with delight at Nikkari's invitation. She slipped her hand into his and allowed him to lead her down the rest of the stairs. "Certainly," she replied, her lips curled into a mischievous smile. [break][break]

Once they reached a larger hall, she drew close to him and rested her other hand on his shoulder. As they twirled across the floor, she matched his steps and movements. Though she was unfamiliar with the dance, his expertise and her natural confidence lent her grace. [break][break]

A pair of double doors at the other end of the chamber burst open. Several mechanical Pokémon stomped through, a kind that Yumi had only seen once before. However, almost as soon as they set foot in the building, their movements slowed. [break][break]

Kaori leapt. A LOW SWEEP buckled the legs of one of the strange Pokémon. It tried to fight back, but its sluggishness was its downfall. The Tsareena's following attacks crushed its shell and laid it low. [break][break]

21 experience the kingdom's song lowering tempo, causing all mechanizations, including soulless pokemon, to slow dramatically.

When Nikkari walked toward the nearest window, Yumi followed. Instead of surprise at the sight beyond the glass panes, she felt relieved; so they had made it to the kingdom of clockwork and machinery, after all. [break][break]

"Why not?" she said, too preoccupied with the strange melody to notice the same movements outside that he had. An adventurous smirk curled her lips. "It's a beautiful song. I want to see who's playing it." [break][break]

Leaving his side, she started toward a grand, curving staircase carved of marble. Her Tsareena followed at a slower pace, more cautious than curious. [break][break]

"Nikkari, look! There are more portraits up here," Yumi shouted as she reached the landing, peering at the walls. "Different ones, too."
