More scribbled notes, though these were familiar. Her grandfather had stressed the very same lessons: maintain, adapt, and protect. And the diversification of opportunities had allowed Goldenrod City to thrive under Hasegawa rule for all those years.[break][break]

Yumi knew, then, that arguing with the first option was the wrong choice. The third was probably best if she wanted to end the conversation, but new drinks had appeared according to the text. She and digital Fernando clearly weren't finished speaking.[break][break]

Yumi jotted down the words as she read them. Before long, an entire page of her notebook had been filled with random scribblings under the label Fernando Silph.[break][break]

Then she considered her options. The first one seemed pointless; after all, the digital recreation of Fernando had indicated during the entire route how unimpressive he believed his actions were. He did what he had to do; nothing more, nothing less.[break][break]

She felt, too, that the answer to the second option was obvious. People, even vassals, need to believe they possess some kind of autonomy — some identity — even if they do not.[break][break]

Which left only the third option, which she tapped with her thumb.[break][break]

Even in her weakened condition, Yumi did not miss the flicker of discomfort in Parker's expression before she smoothed it away with a smile. But Yumi found she did not have the energy or desire to pursue that curiosity. Instead, she merely closed her eyes and said, "Yeah. It's cool."[break][break]

"A proper dinner?" Yumi asked, her eyebrows raised in surprise. Parker was a great lay, but Yumi doubted their ideas of a 'proper dinner' aligned. Yumi enjoyed spending time with Parker as a friend, but if the other woman had other ideas… "Where are you thinking?"

Yumi blinked at the options presented to her. What was going on? Devon? GMH? Rose Industries? These were unfamiliar to her. She had heard of Benoit Armaments and Nautica, of course — though from different contexts.[break][break]

Were… were these companies that Silph Co. was looking to incorporate? All of a sudden, Yumi felt like the fake conversation with fake Fernando was way over her head. She wrote down the names of all the companies so she could research them later.[break][break]

Chewing lightly on her lower lip, she made a selection at random.[break][break]

A shift occurred within Yumi at Sebastian's explanation, the barest hint of surprise easing the landscape of her vixen smile into something more open and genuine. That they, two strangers meeting by chance, might share a common thread had never occurred to her.[break][break]

She schooled her expression back under control. Whatever glimpse of honest wonder had slipped out of her grasp disappeared, replaced by the sort of curiosity people displayed when highly amused.[break][break]

"You're definitely wealthy," Yumi remarked with a chuckle, giving voice to her earlier hypothesis. "Either that, or you were incredibly confident. Neither of which are bad things."[break][break]

Their food arrived in record time: steaming plates of grilled salmon and eel, sides of rice and soup. Yumi barely acknowledged the waitress as she turned her attention to her meal.[break][break]

"I should know, since I'm both, and also left home because of my parents' dumb decisions. They raised me to be their heiress but then decided I was better as a pawn, to be sold like some prized heifer in exchange for a good business deal. They didn't take it very well when I told them to go fuck themselves."[break][break]

Perhaps it wasn't rule in the conventional sense of the term, but Yumi's upbringing had taught her that running a family as successful as her own — with multiple restaurants, gambling parlors, and less-than-legal practices under their control — was rulership in its own right.[break][break]

However, she didn't consider the League Council an actual ruling body despite the regionwide changes they decided. No, as familiar as she was with corrupt officials, she understood the concept behind politicians as public servants. Choosing that dialogue option would reveal not just ignorance, but outright stupidity.[break][break]

As for Avatars… Yumi had to admit, she knew very little about them. But for all their mystery and power, she didn't consider rulership to be among their goals. Not in this universe.[break][break]

A CEO, on the other hand, was much closer to her idea of a modern ruler. So that is the option she selected, in the end.[break][break]

Yumi raised an eyebrow at his answer. "Mesagoza? I haven't been, unfortunately. I'd love to go, though," she replied, already imagining the sunny Paldean landscape and what kind of outfits she'd wear.[break][break]

It seemed Sebastian had also traveled far from home, not unlike Yumi herself. She wondered what brought him to Hoenn and tried to gauge his background based on what she knew of him so far. A Paldean who'd visited Johto often in his youth, who knew how to ice skate and had charmed her with his gentlemanly demeanor.[break][break]

If he wasn't nobility, then he was at least from a wealthy family, she decided.[break][break]

"Paldea is far from Hoenn — much farther than Johto is," Yumi remarked idly before taking a sip of her wine. Its sweetness flowed smoothly over her tongue. "What brings you all this way? Work? Or pleasure?"[break][break]

Her dark eyes watched him closely from across the table.

Yumi grinned as the heart meter jumped up from 20 to 50 points. This route was clearly the one the game wanted her to take if she wanted to romance Prince Remiel. She sipped her own wine from a glass and took a moment to nibble a strawberry while she reviewed the dialogue options.[break][break]

They were all good choices, she had to admit. She could see herself saying all of them, and also admiring the paintings. But if the prince admired her forwardness, she would have to lean into that.[break][break]

It seemed Parker didn't quite get what Yumi was insinuating. She finished off her soup, using the pause to contemplate whether she should reveal Mei's secondary career — or was it her primary career?[break][break]

"She's an assassin," Yumi eventually said. "She works with us. Well. Not specifically with you and me, but Team Rocket."[break][break]

Setting down the empty soup bowl on the coffee table, Yumi nestled back into the couch and wrapped her blanket more tightly around herself. She closed her eyes and exhaled deeply.[break][break]

"That was really good," she said of the soup. "You'll have to make it for me again someday, even when I'm not sick." She cracked open one eye to look over at Parker. "Do you cook a lot? Maybe I can come over for dinner some time."[break][break]

Though Lex did not give her many details, what she said was enough. Yumi was satisfied with the answer and respected her friend's wishes to change topics. The black-haired woman did have one final comment, however: "Then I'm glad you made them pay."[break][break]

She might not know how to comfort another person, but she could stand by Lex's side against the injustice done against her.[break][break]

When the conversation turned to Yumi, she huffed and crossed her arms over her chest. "I left home, too, but my family kicked me out."[break][break]

She felt no shame discussing the reason for her situation. After all, her grandfather and parents had done an injustice to her.[break][break]

"Father wanted me to marry a business partner of his and I refused. They wouldn't accept it, so they cut me off completely." She shrugged, as if such actions hadn't bothered her. "They thought they were teaching me a lesson, but I'll show them. I don't need them."
