Granted, it’s not difficult to outpace Emerson. Even so, he’s relieved that the other doesn’t call that fact out and simply accepts the compliment. “Makes sense. I didn’t think I’d catch up.”[break][break]

Too many dumplings, it would seem, even if he’s still skinny as a rail.[break][break]

“Huh? You haven’t?” Sometimes, he forgets that he’s not at home anymore and that the phenomena is literally brand new to Hoenn. But he’s had this grafaiai for ages.[break][break]

His face reddens again, worsened from the cold. “Oh. Right. I’m Paldean, sooo…yeahh.” Em shuffles awkwardly, then reaches up to scratch the grafaiai’s ear. “This is actually one of the, like, three that doesn’t have a food name. This is Warhol.”[break][break]

Warhol waggles his weird, spindly fingers in some sort of greeting.[break][break]

Absently, Emerson folds his arms around himself to ward off the cold. “It won’t get lost, will it?” He doesn’t know how most psychic Pokémon work, honestly.

With the heliolisk successfully avoided, Em continues on his merry way— though that doesn’t last too long.[break][break]

“Oh!” Emerson stutters back a few steps when something pops out in front of him. Warhol shoots forward, ready to take down a new offender just the same, but Em’s eyes are already round with delight. “nononono!” he shakes his head rapidly and the grafaiai backs off hesitantly.[break][break]

It’s just a cute lil pawmi![break][break]

To this Pokémon, he offers a treat from his bag, ones he knows his own pawmi at home looooves. “Lolo is gonna hate that I opened her snacks, but I bet she’d like another pawmi around,” he says as the lil guy scrabbles to stuff his cheeks. “Plus there’s more where that came from!”

By the time Emerson catches up with James, he might be just a little out of breath.[break][break]

Hands on his needs as he tries to draw air into his lungs, rusty copper eyes peer up at the other, cheeks red from both the cool and the running. "You're really fast." He might not actually be, for all he knows, but compared to Em he's like a zippy jolteon or something.[break][break]

Once he stands, he watches the elgyem that's summoned with blatant curiosity. "Hey! I name a lot of my pokemon after foods, too." Not the topic he means to bring up, and maybe that's weird since they're on a mission to find his missing gyoza, but it's kinda funny. Especially since the name is blue jelly bean.[break][break]

Of course, his grafaiai is one of the handful not snack-themed. Warhol, nimble as ever, climbs up his pants leg and up Em's side until he can drape on the redhead's shoulder. Waiting for something to do.[break][break]

Em is wondering the same. "So, ummmmm...what do we do now?" He shivers a bit, having not bothered to put a jacket on over his hoodie in his rush to follow the other.

Sparks crackle in the dark, lighting up a nearby alleyway. Emerson shifts his bag on his arm uneasily, and picks up his pace when he spies the heliolisk eyeing him at a short distance, or rather, the bag and its produce. [break][break]

Warhol continues to lope behind him, readying a GUNK SHOT to blast at the wild pokemon should it try anything, or taking Em's snacks. too overly long grafaiai fingers point at his own eyes, then shove out toward the heliolisk.

It was a look that made his stomach flutter. No one ever looked at him so enthusiastically. And Emerson didn’t know how to respond to it, so he met it with a small, tentative smile of his own.[break][break]

“Eh, happens to all of us at some point.” Well, not really. Not to him. Technology was a language that came easily to Emerson. Way more easily than holding a common conversation.[break][break]

“Kieran,” he echoed absently, as if committing it to memory so that he wouldn't forget again. But why would he do that? It wasn’t like there was going to be a next time to a secondary chance encounter. But the idea of being left clueless and forgetful sounded mortifying to ridiculous levels. So even if he never saw this guy again, Em would remember. Kieran. Just in case.[break][break]

“I’m Emerson.” Quickly volunteered before his face reddened again. Why’d he do that? The other hadn't asked, and now he’d think Em was overly friendly. The redhead’s stomach twisted itself knots, cheeks hot as he tried to avoid fixating on the other’s face for too long. He wasn’t a weirdo! Really!![break][break]

Neither had withdrawn from the dumpling stand off yet, but his fingers were getting cold from the freezer. Kieran, however, surprised him. “Yeah..” he replied, but why was he suddenly feeling so halfhearted about it? Normally, he’d snatch the bag without remorse if it was relented in the way the taller man was doing now. But the stab of guilt in his stomach made Em pause. He has nothing to feel guilty or bad for, so why did the idea of taking the togepi dumplings from Kieran, with his big, sad eyes feel immediately like a war crime?[break][break]

He was supposed to be the one with the sad eyes! Him!! Emerson![break][break]

Em sighed, hesitating, though he did finally pull the bag out of the cold freezer. “I mean, yeah,” he repeated, waffling. Say thanks and run, dummy. “A-are you sure..?”[break][break]

wait, no!! He was going off script. Uh oh.

All Emerson wants to do is get from point A to point B. Namely, from the grocery store back to his apartment. It’s not a long walk, but the idea of distractions fill him with a particular sort of dread. He just wants to get home and prep his dinner.[break][break]

It’s one of those rare occasions where he didn’t have anywhere to be today and he’s left home before dark for once. But the sun is sinking now, which is fine. The dark doesn’t bother him. It’s what might show up, so he’s got his grafaiai out. Dumpling was too lazy to come along— Em doesn’t blame the dedenne. His free arm has a cloth bag of produce in it. All for the culinary experiment he intends to conduct.

The negative answer only prompts Em to look at the other that much more pitifully. Followed by a weak, despondent “Noooo…”[break][break]

What’s he gonna do now? Em’s plan to eat his fill (and then some,) before slipping into what will be an all-day sleep-a-thon comes crumbling down around him. He’ll have to cook! He doesn’t feel like cooking![break][break]

That’s why he ordered out. And he’s not going to make the poor delivery guy get another order for him. Which means that after Em cooks, he’ll have to clean, because his kitchen is the singular space in his apartment that he can’t stand to be messy.[break][break]

He blinks when James breaks through his worry spiral, “Huh?” but then he just takes off! “H-hey, wait!” Emerson releases his grafaiai to come along, and by the time he’s hastily pulls on some slippers and closes his door, he figures the other will be long gone.[break][break]

His stamina is a bit shite, after all.
