Rhys found himself holding his breath, just a little, as he waited to see the results of the Kecleon's excursion, as he couldn't see the actual act of - downside of having a pokemon that could virtually vanish from sight, he assumed. The Iron Treads being monitored gave a sudden twitch and looked up from its aimless ambling for a moment, then, satisfied, resumed its patrol.

A moment later, Alec reappeared next to him, holding out a small segment of metal plating proudly. Blinking, Rhys slid the prize into another specimen bag and in his satchel it went. "Excellent job," he murmured, patting Alec on the head absently. The Kecleon grinned broadly, tongue lolling out briefly.

The successful endeavor was abruptly broken by someone yelling at him. He startled, jerking halfway upward from his crouching position, and waved his arms frantically toward the interloper, hissing, "Shhhhh!"

He paused only momentarily as he actually caught sight of the other man, and he felt his jaw clench without consciously realizing he'd done it. Great, this whack job again. Here? Of ALL places, here, now?! Rhys silently sent up an apology for whatever sin he'd committed in a past life.

Any response he could have given was forestalled by a series of ominous beeps echoing through the chasm behind him. He turned slowly to look at the herd he'd been tracking to find each and every red-tinged sensor trained on him and Tavish. With a clank of machinery and a series of thumps that shook the earth, they began charging as one toward the disruption to their afternoons.

Rhys scooped Alec into his arms and tore into motion, coat flapping as he raced past the chemist and his Obstagoon, growling out, "Fight later, run now!"

Relief registers dimly in the back of his mind as Parker rests her hand on his shoulder, and he's reasonably assured that his snippy attitude had been let slide. He figured that was important for first impressions, even with the gigantic death machines rolling back and forth through this portion of the Area.

Relief turned immediately into fear once again as he felt her grip tighten - fuck, not the wife-irlfriend. Then again, he supposed that was a good explanation for Nomi glancing at her phone in the middle of his experiment reviews and going a shade of pink to rival her hair. He snuck a glance to Parker before returning it ahead of him. Huh, opposites attract, he supposes.

"Oh, g-great," he grins broadly, proud that he only lets one stutter slip. "Yeah, the spot shouldn't be much further in, but I wasn't ready for these things. Guess that's why they're sending us, though, yeah?"

No Iron Big Wheels are trundling down the path to them, so he takes the opportunity to move ahead with his new companion, listening to about half of what she has to say in favor of keeping his eyes peeled for potential imminent bodily injury. "Wait, you beat one of these things with your BARE HANDS?"

Rhys whirls frantically, breaking his Goodra from its occupation with a Roaring Moon to send him surging toward the Great Tusk in a BODY SLAM that slows the approach of the enormous creature at the cost of splattering Goodra's slime across the rocky ground. Charming.

He was getting incredibly tired of the myriad and wondrous things coming out of the Great Chasm and Area Zero, as most of them, he had determined, were ultimately hazardous to his health.

The rig spits and coughs concerningly, but keeps up some kind of operation, and that's good enough for the doctor as he glances toward Dane, eyes widening in alarm. "Robot butterfly thing on your six!"

Rhys curls his lip at Nenet's suggestion, opting instead to stand and absently brush off the front of his slacks. "I'd rather not, if it's all the same," he affirms, nudging a small pebble into the hole experimentally. He doesn't quite know what he expected - he can't hear the thing land over the racket the machine's making, and although it's getting marginally softer the deeper the thing burrows, he can feel the vibrations underfoot.

When the woman releases her Solrock, he peers at it admiringly for a moment before offering a heartfelt sigh. "Well, I wouldn't have put money on it if you hadn't said anything, but this place seems to enjoy karmic backlash." Digging in the satchel at his hip, he withdraws a pokeball and calls out his Crobat.

"Go up the pass and get back here if there's trouble, yeah?"
[break][break]
The Crobat screeches in what Rhys can only assume is a positive response and wheels about, flapping off toward the mouth of the path. As he passes overhead of a small clump of vegetation, the vegetation takes the opportunity to turn and regard the bat with suspicion, then toward the trainer who'd sent it out to disturb them.

Wait, it wasn't vegetation. It was those damn vine-covered mushrooms that Rhys had had quite enough of, lately, thank you very much. "Here's the trouble!" he hollers toward Crobat as the Brute Bonnets advance on his and Nenet's position, ducking forward at an angle to draw attention from the woman and her Solrock. His Crobat whipped around almost immediately, firing off an AIR SLASH that clipped one of the fungal attackers and sent it crumpling to the rocky earth.

The opportunity to strike presented itself in the form of a rustling patch of grass. Rhys tensed, ready for an attack, and a Yamper wearing a broad, happy canine grin bounded out across the path, carrying itself with dubious grace on its stubby little legs. Rhys sighed, relaxing, as the little dog caught sight of him and waddled over, sitting happily at his feet.

Rhys glanced from the Yamper to the inscrutably pensive Alakazam at his side, and back. He felt badly about using this particular pokemon for training, and it seemed somehow unfair to consider it when the thing was just as happy to approach him and park itself as it was to dive right back into the grass where it came from.

Looking around for the Safari Warden, Rhys lifted a foot and nudged the Yamper experimentally with the toe of his loafer. "Come on, little guy, you have to make this look good. Can you play dead?"

The Yamper offered a cheerful bark tinged with static and promptly flopped onto his side, tongue lolling out dramatically. 'Well,' Rhys thought to himself as he tossed a Safari ball at the 'incapacitated' dog, 'If only some people listened as well as that, mm?'

Rhys squinted at the woman. NPCs? Oh, a gamer. Probably makes this whole thing a little easier, if he's honest. "Best as I can tell, yeah, as long as they don't get any friends from down the road. These things are more like robots than actual pokemon, but if that's the case, who or what built them?"

He spends a moment scratching his head, then grimaces at her retort. "Sorry, sorry, I just hate field work on days like this. My head's all over." He takes a moment to straighten his tie in an attempt to visibly pull himself together, though the motion leaves the neckwear more crooked and bedraggled than when he started. "Yeah, yes. I'm Rhys." He blinks, processing what has to be a nickname of some kind. "Nomes? You mean Dr. Sat- er, Nomi?" Some habits were hard to break.

"No, I haven't seen her in probably a week," he admits. "She loaned me space in one of the labs to do some work, but I haven't checked in with her for more than an e-mail recently. Why, do you know her?"

The coast seemed clear for the moment, and he beckoned to Parker and her Blaziken before setting off, veering along the path to the rocky wall of the chasm and hugging it closely as he proceeded forward. "We oughtta be, at that," he nods, grinning. "Should have about thirty seconds or so before the next run, stick close and Ev might be able to cover you and Firebird there too."

A little cluster of dry weeds nearby Parker's hiding spot shakes as the Donphan rolls by, ostensibly from the movement of the ground, but also possibly from actual fear as the weeds hiss at Parker, "Hey, find your own damn bush!"

The air parts and twists around the little clump of dried foliage, revealing a disheveled Rhys, cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth, and a Hisuian Zoroark leaning over him protectively. "These things have been coming back and forth all afternoon, and I can't get any further!" he grumbles, glancing warily in the direction the Donphan had gone.

"I was supposed to set up for observation, but I can't do that if I'm liable to get flattened every time one of these things decides it's time for a salad!" He raises up, just enough, to peek along the next stretch of the chasm, apparently empty at this point. He takes a long drag from his cigarette and tosses it to the ground, stubbing it out with his heel.

"I'm heading to the next spot. You gonna sit there all day or did you have a better plan?" he inquires blandly.

Although Rhys wouldn't say he'd ever shy away from a dangerous situation in the name of research, he found himself wondering exactly how worth it the data to be gleaned from this particular exercise was when it involved placing himself square in the middle of a number of irascible pokemon that resembled machines more than living creatures.

He bent to retrieve a sprinkling of metal shavings, the castoffs of a member of the herd of Iron Treads he was currently at the fringes of, and carefully shook them into a specimen bag which he sealed and placed into the satchel at his hip. "Helpful, I think, but we need a more direct sample. Alec?" he murmured.

Next to him, the air rippled as a camouflaged Kecleon faded into view, and Rhys indicated a nearby Iron Treads that had separated itself, somewhat, from the larger group. "I need a specimen from its underside. Try the tail, it shouldn't notice as much. Stay out of sight - it looks like they've got excellent vision but shit olfactory response."

The Kecleon nodded affirmatively and shimmered out of sight once more, amphibian footprints appearing in the dirt leading toward the Iron Treads in question. Rhys hated to think of something happening to the Kecleon if it went sideways, but he hated even more thinking of something happening to himself, so he supposed this was preferable.

Of the various locales that Rhys had been dispatched to for missions, he had to say that Area Zero was one of the most visually impressive. A seeming natural wonder, the area was characterized by slopes, walkways, large expanses of flat earth, and clusters of shining Tera crystals that Rhys still didn't fully understand the significance of no matter how many briefings he read.

Then again, he supposed that that was part of the reason Rocket had been pushing for mineral analysis of the newly-exposed area. That wasn't remotely his field of study, but he supposed all the higher-ups really needed were an extra pair of hands and enough of a brain to not allow the machine to get damaged while it was gathering data.

He approached the woman with an unhurried gait, offering a crooked smile and nodding his head in return of the greeting. "Rhys Collins," he replied, sliding his hands into his pockets as he surveyed first his partner, then the machine. "'Fraid not," he quipped with a frown, walking around the device. "I was told there was a button...?"

He crouched, squinting, and with the certainty of a man who was certain about nothing at all, jabbed at the only button he could see - a small red one nestled between a cluster of metal corners. The machine revved to life with a sound like rocks in a garbage disposal, and promptly began sinking into the earth as a handful of small drills extended from the base of the apparatus.

"Oh, shit," Rhys commented blandly, leaning over from his crouching position to look at the increasingly deep shaft the machine was digging as it shrank from view, then back up to Nenet with a tilt of his head. "Suppose it'll come back when it's done?"

A SWEET SCENT gave Rhys pause for thought as he continued along the trail, and he frowned, wrinkling his nose and casting about to identify the source of the odor. His Nidoking was not nearly so selective about reacting to the phenomenon, however, and, eyes half-closed and dreamlike, stumbled from the path with a warm, drunken growl.

Before Rhys could call out a reprimand to his wayward pokemon, a crimson ball of flame rocketed toward the Nidoking, bursting into a brilliant display of colorful embers against his back and causing the surrounding grass to smolder. Rhys threw up an arm to guard his face as the erstwhile shrapnel from the explosion cast through the air, and Nidoking snarled in pain.

"Don't just stand there, you absolute simp, TACKLE her!" Rhys had sighted the approaching Salazzle from the origin of the FLAME BURST, and it only took another moment for Nidoking to identify the attacker as well. Roaring, he slammed into her with a TACKLE that harnessed both his strength and frustration, sending her bowling over onto the path. Rhys, ready for the eventuality, threw a pokeball at the lizard into which she disappeared.

"Come on," he growled disapprovingly at Nidoking, who had the grace to look sheepish. "You fell for that?"

His time near Mauville City had paid off surprisingly well, and Rhys found himself back in the Safari Zone with a freshly-caught Alakazam floating through the air at his side. Over the past few days, he'd gotten accustomed to the pokemon's taciturn attitude - the psychic-type wasn't a scowler, per se, but opted to remain silent and relatively unconcerned with his surroundings unless action needed to be taken.

This was just fine for Rhys, who often used these sorts of solitary excursions to think, and he had plenty to think about. The debacle at the Dyna Tree when he'd been assigned to protect it hadn't gone over smoothly, but he hadn't exactly been strung up for it either, so he supposed he ought to count his blessings.

He could do well enough when he had the time to plan, but he needed to work on his ability to react, and react correctly. It was like his first mission, that pokemon center infiltration, all over again. He needed to make sure he was on his game enough and strong enough to take on anything that came at him without running for help.
