As they plummeted earthward he instinctively wrapped his arms around Lydia's much smaller frame. As a result she was quick to spring up, while he landed with a heavy grunt. Rather than move immediately he kept his eyes closed, allowing them to adjust far more quickly when he did open them.

What would be a harrowing sight to many was in fact rather annoying to the seasoned soldier. The Sandyghast had evidently chosen a natural sand hole for its abode, or at the least its hunting grounds. They were now trapped beneath a few hundred tons of liquid rock, and the rest of the desert seemed inclined to remove this little blemish on its otherwise featureless surface. Turning his head he could see tunnels, hear clacking mandibles, and see the glint of light off metallic bodies. Clearly the hole had been formed from the collapse of part of a Durant colony.

While this would be even more terrifying to many, to Axel it was only opportunity. The pokémon, while efficient diggers, were not possessed of the ease to move through earth as some others were. There must be a entrance they utilized, and thus an exit for them. Rolling swiftly into a crouch he paused next to Lydia just long enough to flash her a lopsided smirk. "Roger Captain." And then both he and the Mightyena vanished into the darkness, moving towards daylight.

From the outskirts of the crowd came a slow sound, echoing through the sudden break in the noise. Many of the people looked about in confusion at the sudden, further interruption, while those closest turned towards the source. It was there that they would find a large man, clad in a black military uniform. At his side stood a grizzled Mightyena, while a combat rifle was slung from his shoulder; and on his chest, was emblazoned a small, red R.

Perhaps it was a bit played out, but Axel had always enjoyed the effect of a good slow clap. He was being paid, today, with performing what some called a 'good will' mission; others called it outreach, recruitment, bolstering, or any number of other things. None of that mattered to him so long as the coin continued to flow and he was not unduly restrained. As it so happened he was being given near free reign in this particular endeavor in addition to his compensation. Something told him that was an indicator of the believed chance of success but, again, he didn't really care.

On arriving in the little town he'd found it already in an uproar, unruly citizens gathering in the square to protest their conditions. On the one hand, it saved him the time and trouble of finding and assembling themselves, not to mention the bother of getting them whipped up. On the other hand, his presence was likely to go unappreciated. It seemed they were quite frightened by his current employers and were desperate for a fix to the situation. Whether they knew it or not, providing that fix was his exact intent.

With the crowd now more confused than riled he strode forward, the Mightyena keeping step at his side. The people before him quickly moved out of his way, some in astonishment, others in fear. Regardless his path remained clear as he casually strode to the front, giving the 'Rangers' a cursory appraisal before turning his back on them. He now faced the crowd, clearly nervous at the appearance of this bogeyman, armed no less, and raised his hands.

"What fine words, wouldn't you agree everyone? 'Just wait'. 'Be patient' 'Don't worry.' 'Someone else will come and solve all your problems." He turned sideways, allowing the crowd to see past him to the two rangers as he also faced them. "Tell us, will that be before or after they've finished wringing the people dry? These poor people are terrified, their homes and business destroyed or in peril, and what has the 'League' done for them? Not a thing." He scoffed. "They can't even be bothered to send proper authorities, instead shipping out a pair of children to try and placate the masses."

Already he could hear a few murmurs of assent. As afraid of him as they might be now, that was nothing compared to the fear they had been living with daily, or the indignation of seemingly being ignored by their authorities. Once more he turned his back on the pair, a calculated move intended to prick their ire. "I think it's quite obvious how much the League cares. They expect you poor people to pay your taxes and die while they sit up in Evergrande scheming how to squeeze even more out of you. And even if they wanted to help they couldn't; the so called 'League' is so corrupt and fragmented that they can't even help themselves. Your government has failed you, they can't do anything for you; But I can."

Overhead, a dragon roared.

Broad shoulders shrugged, the look on his face seemingly saying 'What can I say?'. Verbally, meanwhile, he responded, "I did." Lydia was like most other officer recruits, fresh out of the academy and wet behind the ears. They all thought they knew better than the rank and file, that the key to victory was carefully notated in one of their little books. The idea that something outside of their experience could occur was unthinkable, which quite often left them in for a rude awakening. Most quickly died or were shuffled off, a few actually learned. He couldn't quite say what it was in Lydia's case, though she'd come quite close to the first and seemed to have fallen prey to the second.

"Lucky for you that I'm bad at following orders, hmm?" His own experience and training had provided him a great deal of insight into matters martial, and despite the little Lieutenant's strident protestations he could have written a detailed report of the incident before it even happened. It was precisely for that reason that he'd ignored her strict instructions to stay put. Shadowing her platoon had provided his squad the ability to intervene in the ensuing slaughter and drive the Rockets back, but there was nothing they could have done to prevent the outcome. Saving the dead and dying from an ignominious fate was to be the extent of their heroics. With one notable exception of course.

His lips twitched a tad at her assertions, unable to refrain from poking the badger. "I very much doubt that. You wouldn't be a very good officer if it were true." Politics was the death of honesty he'd found, and so he tried dearly to avoid it. For someone like Lydia though, much as she might wish otherwise, that was where she belonged. Even now, in the middle of some alien desert, she was trying to build bridges.

With the horizon clear, and due warning given, he leaned against the chattered column next to them, allowing his rifle to hang loosely in his hands. "Aye. I've an uncle there who enlightened me to several lucrative opportunities." Some of the technology he'd encountered in that blighted region was quite simply astonishing, and its adaptation and integration with other technologies closer to home had long been a pastime of his.

As she crouched his eyes followed her down, a brow raising in approval as he unashamedly eyed her taut rear and the muscles of her lower back and thighs. His spectation was rudely interrupted by a large paw coming down on his boot and a disparaging glance cast his way. So, ruefully, he simply sighed and turned his attention off to the horizon. "I won't deny that it was somewhat enjoyable; it was never boring, that much is certain. Without any sort of centralization every thug with a pokéball thought they were a crimelord." A brief glance over his shoulder. "Not unlike Hoenn it seems."

Her test of his word earned only an amused smirk from the mercenary. He wasn't really surprised that she refused to take advice; afterall, it hadn't been tthat long since they'd parted ways, and Lydia was not exactly the type open to change. Unfortunately, however, her little 'test' had alerted the beast below that prey was indeed near, and in just a moment she was being sucked below the sands. "Shit!" One arm lashed out, grabbing ahold of her, while the other wrapped around the broken pillar to provide him leverage with which to haul her back. Even as his boots were digging into the retreating sand the armaments behind him lashed out, the shield put to one side as the ghost pokémon drove its massive blade straight down into the earth. There was a wailing screech as the sentient quicksand quickly retreated from the assault, freeing Lydia from its grasp. Unfortunately, the sudden lack of mass created a yawning chasm, the sharp drop jerking his fingers free from the wind polished stone and sending him tumbling down with her. Just behind them came the dark form of the Mightyena, quickly diving in after before the desert once more consumed the opening.
