Taunting was not quite accurate. Perhaps a better term would have been goading, but even that didn't quite catch it. In the absence of more entertaining prey Fafnir was greatly enjoying himself with terrorizing the stupid little bugs. All their weak little psychic jabs did was egg him on. Now they were challenging him! Not really, of course, but the idea made it more enjoyable for him, while also being very, very funny. To think, a puny bug thinking it could challenge him! A majestic, powerful, grand dragon! It was the very height of comedy.

While these thoughts poured through the lizards skull, his partner summarily ignored him. Fafnir could be counted on for two things; to be asleep when there was work, and to set fire to anything that moved. The latter of these traits was the more important of the two, and it was for it that Axel overlooked his shenanigans. Ares, meanwhile, was as stoic as ever, only beaten in this regard by Durendal. Though, whether that was because the ghost lacked an opinion or simply lacked a face to express it, one may never know. Either way they were both statues, particularly in comparison to their boisterous compatriot.

When Lydia 'corrected' him, the smirk tugged at his jaw a bit more. While he hadn't known for certain that she'd been promoted, it was a logical assumption. Afterall no one stayed at the bottom of the barrel for long unless that's where they belonged. This one did not. What she lacked in size she made up for in spirit, and Axel had never really been a fan of boneless meat. Still, that wasn't going to stop him from hounding her. "Ooooooh. my mistake, We have a Captain in our midst! Well, better look sharp, eh? Captain's coming! Better polish the guns, and make sure our boots are nice and shiny!" He knew precisely what her reaction was going to be and, just like Fafnir and his bugs, he enjoyed it far too much to stop.

Her own question was an attempt at a jab, but his own hide was a bit too leathery. More importantly, he was aware that, as little as she enjoyed his teasing, she would most certainly not enjoy the answer. Unlike him, Lydia was an idealist. She found a cause and fought for it tooth and nail to the bloody end. It was admirable, in a way, as long as it didn't lead to blind fanaticism. He'd never been sure with her how close she truly came to that line. Perhaps one day he'd regret finding out. Either way, the future was only relevant when it was immediate. Here and now demanded a response, and he carefully considered his.

It was for this reason that he remained silent as she moved up and began scanning the distance. He shared a quick glance with the Mightyena at his side who, after rolling his eyes in indignant exasperation, huffed his compliance. Lips twitching Axel turned his eyes to the woman in front of him, the pokémon at her side. It was simple enough. He casually moved forward, coming up just behind her, the other two at his side. "About that." In a flash of movement the three struck. Area pounced upon the Lycanroc, pinning it to the ground with his superior bulk. The Aegislah unfurled it's arms, striking in two direction; its sword coming down on the metallic monster, while its shield came around to block the Lucario's retaliation. Axel, meanwhile, with preternatural speed unslung his rifle, flicking off the safety as it pressed just against her hair. When he spoke his voice was monotone, expressionless. "Rocket."

He waited, several tense seconds of heartpounding suspense, before he grinned. As quickly as they'd attacked the trio withdrew. Durendal's arms again folded into itself, the armaments held fast to his shadowed form. Ares shrugged and gave the wolf under him a 'What can ya do?' expression before gently bumping muzzles and hopping off. And with just as much trained precision as it'd come out, Axel's rifle was back in its sling. He leaned down, giving Lydia a mild thump on the back. "Try to keep up, Captain." With that he took off across the sands at a low trot, rifle held low before him, the Mightyena trotting alongside while the Aegislash kept pace at their backs. Fafnir, not wanting to give up his fun but also not intending to be abandoned in this wasteland, began herding the bugs in the same direction.

Hoenn

If hell was on earth, then the devil clearly loved the beach. Though he'd only recently arrived and thus hadn't had the opportunity to examine the lay himself, the reports he'd read made him seriously question the veracity of the travel brochures. Rocket's antics were nothing shocking, he'd fought for and against, it was all the same really. A corrupt government at least as bad as the ones it demonized was even less surprising. No, where things got interesting were the other reports.

Rips in space, folds in time, dimensional tears and 'gods' descending upon the earth, imbuing 'divine' power. Quite a bit of it was drowned in supposition and nonsense superstition, but there was enough truth there for him to piece together that the Hoenn region was not a nice place to be. So, of course, that's exactly where he needed to be.

At the moment, he just so happened to be experiencing one of these anomalous events himself. Shortly after having arrived and signed his short term contract, sources had put him in touch with some eggheads that thought too much for their own good. They seemed to think they could analyze whatever was on the other side of these 'wormholes' and somehow figure it out. Maybe they'd solve world hunger, maybe they'd just make a bigger gun. It was always one of the two. Either way, it was a simple enough job, and the inherent threat gave him plenty of room to negotiate 'hazard pay'. And besides, he couldn't deny that he was curious. A whole new world, who knew what lay in store.

As they approached he could already sense the disturbance in the air, the wormhole seeming to warp the air around it. It was a strange sight to be sure, and he had to admit it looked quite odd. Fafnir was unimpressed, the dragon giving only a snort of derision at the sight. Nevertheless they were both scanning the ground for any signs of life, Axel out of caution, Fafnir out of boredom. Seeing nothing they landed, the man having to practically leap down before he was shrugged off by the antsy lizard.

Axel paid him no mind, however; that was just who he was. Instead he released a pair of pokéballs, as the dragon roared and lunged through the portal ahead. For his part Axel just sighed, sharing a pointed look with Ares before they stepped through as well, the phantom blade floating just behind his back.

On the other side, they found sand. And a rather amused dragon now chasing the helpless bugs about, roaring in triumph at his 'dominance'. Axel's eyes flashed across the landscape, noting any sources of cover, notable landpoints, potential water sources, and anything else that may prove of use. The wolf at his side silently appraised the group next to them before giving the other canid a perfunctory nod of acknowledgement.

Though he'd heard Lydia speak, and in fact known she was there from the moment he stepped through, Axel continued to ignore her until he'd completed his survey. Only then did he turn around, his eyes quickly appraising her, a lopsided smirk draping itself across his face at the sight of the young soldier. "Lieutenant."
