Held by the leg, Aoi dangled over one of the numerous Mossdeep City cliffs overlooking the ocean. The boys who held him there, the future cadets of the Pokémon League, pretended not to hear the boy's pleas; his insistence that he had zero interest in becoming a soldier and that his life would be in actual mortal danger if he was dropped from this height fell on deaf ears. They let go and he fell into the water with a splash, and as expected, immediately began to sink. The older boys, who liked to talk about courage and strength, but had never faced any real adversity began to panic. Their terrified cries and attempts to diminish individual responsibility were the last things he heard before his head dipped beneath the waves. [break][break]

In all honesty, it was a miracle he hadn't died then.[break][break]

For his parents though, both researchers at the Mossdeep Space Center, it was the last straw. Busy with work, they had little time to look after the ten year old Aoi, whose curiosity often got him into these death dealing situations. They decided to ship him off to his mother's home city of Olivine, where he was to be raised under the strict guidance of his maternal grandparents.[break][break]

His grandfather, a kendo enthusiast, who couldn't understand his daughter's intellectual pursuits sought to whip Aoi into shape. For the next four years, he underwent a grueling physical regimen devised by his grandfather. However, although he took all the punishment the old man could mete out and then some, it wasn't martial feats that interested Aoi, nor did he see the appeal in following in the intellectual footsteps of his mother and father.[break][break]

In a way, the Team Rocket invasion of Johto was like a blessing for the fourteen year old. He was able to cut his teeth against hardened criminals while defending his home, and when he returned to Mossdeep City there was no longer any doubt in his mind.
