[attr="class","rosepost"]That was a lot of faith to put in a pokemon. She wasn't so confident about Gallade. She wouldn't leave her pokemon unattended for long. Togekiss was not as chaotic as Pelipper, but she was a glutton and would eat an orchard clean of berries if you turned your back. Her pokemon needed supervision to avoid being menaces. [break][break]

Either Rex was getting lucky with his pokemon or she was unlucky with hers. Or a combination of both. [break][break]

Stepping into camp, the presence of Gogoat stood out to her. "Gallade should've taken care of him if he was really so reliable." Her grumbling was audible. But she'd said earlier that she would let it go... even though she really wanted to skin the damn thing. A gogoat rug would unironically be nice - for camp or for home - but she didn't think Rex could be persuaded. [break][break]

She beelined for the shelter, keeping a sharp eye on the bastard pokemon. She hoped he'd run off while they slept.

She gnawed her lip as Tinkatink charged with a battlecry. Her hammer overhead and her feet pounding the earth, the fairy had eyes for this adversary. She jumped into the air and swung the hammer from overhead, bringing it down and bonking the recovered fossil. [break][break]

The Arctovish didn't seem phased by the attack. In fact, it seemed to interpret it as a sign of friendship and leaned in to nuzzle the fairy. What the hell?[break][break]

And Tinkatink liked it. "Freak," she murmured under her breath. But if the Arctovish made Tinkatink happy, she supposed they'd make a good pair.

[attr="class","rosepost"]It was a very passionate reaction to a silly response of hers, but she didn't mind very much. She liked Rex when he wasn't running his mouth. That timelessness creeped up on her again, and she didn't realize how long she'd been caught up in his embrace until the need for air burned in her lungs. [break][break]

He tugged her close, so she wrapped her arms around him, still trying to gather her scrambled thoughts. She furrowed as he echoed her prior sentiments about worrying later, and she slapped lightly at the back of his head while they were hugging. "Don't mock me," she scolded, pulling away with a pout. "We can address this later. It's, um, the pragmatic thing to do." She wasn't like him, being all... free-spirited and worry-free. It was about energy conservation.[break][break]

"Let's hurry up and get back. I think we've left your pokemon to their own devices for too long."

[attr="class","rosepost"]She was used to some high velocities as a frequent flier, rider, and otherwise rapid-traveling courier. That said, when the elevator descended so sharply, she blacked out. [break][break]

She woke on the floor of the elevator. A groan spilled out of her mouth as she dared to lift her head, dizziness and nausea suffocating her. She heard the tail end of Silverio's question. "Never... better." She pulled herself up slowly. She thought, at first, that it was her pounding head that filled her ears with a pulsing, stuffy sound. [break][break]

As she got to her feet, however, it was clear to see that the noise stemmed from the hallway-like mine shaft ahead of them. Dozens of carbink lined the walls, picking away at the stone maze. "What the fuck have we stumbled into?"

"It - nothing, I said nothing, it's - don't worry about it." She could feel her face getting warm. She knew what he was going to harp on. She tugged her arm to get her hand free of his grip, wanting to cover her face. "Don't be stupid." She wished she had a pinap in her hands to toss at him right now.

"I think it stands to reason that I'd survive better solo than you would," she said with a poor excuse of a laugh. But the conversation was too heavy for levity. [break][break]

"Okay," she finally said, helpless against his good will. "I'll do it. But how soon is soon? I don't... let's wait until tomorrow night, yeah? Give Pelipper a three days and two nights to return." Her turnaround for large parcels sat firmly at that time. Pelipper was only carrying himself, so there was no excuse for anything longer. [break][break]

She reached out to hold his hand. "Let's worry about that later, yeah?" A concession, and a willingness to hold off on cementing a plan that would've never been possible in a different place, in a different time, with different company.

A thousand terrible outcomes splayed out in her mind. It took a moment to gather herself, finish buttoning her clothes, and follow alongside Rex. Whatever it was, stressing couldn't change a thing. "I'm going to strangle him when he gets back," she promised, "if he didn't fight tooth and nail to accomplish his trip quickly." It was the most dire flight he'd ever been on, damn it. Surely, he wasn't so stupid as to think it was a little joy flight... right? [break][break]

"No." It came out instantly, before she could even think it. Then, "I can't do that to you. You should be the one. Togepi's yours, and you must be a strong swimmer, in case he teleports you short of the shore." She couldn't bear the thought of fleeing. She knew how to run, but this wasn't the time for it. Quieter, she insisted: "Don't ask that of me."

[attr="class","rosepost"]She slammed the button beside the elevator door to get it to open, but nothing moved. "Broken?" The light inside the elevator was working, so there was certainly some power getting to it. The button array just... wasn't functional. She braced herself with a foot on the wall, sticking her fingers into the grate of the door and pulling hard to get the elevator open. It creaked unhappily but finally gave way, giving them an opportunity to get inside. [break][break]

By the time the door opened enough for them, she heard the sounds of pokemon. Thankfully, it was their own instead of the Tsareena. "Thank goodness," she exhaled as she stepped into the elevator. "We can get down there with our team intact. Whatever's powering the castle - and maybe the entire realm - must be underneath." As Audino neared, Keiko clicked her capture capsule to return Audino to her pokeball. They wanted to have room in the elevator, after all. [break][break]

Once everyone was aboard, she'd hit the down button. [break][break]

And then the elevator sunk like a rock, not in a controlled fall at all but completely unrestrained by any safety cords altogether.

She wanted to keep a piece of his easy-going spirit and avoided voicing her dissatisfaction. Pragmatically, they still needed to work towards solutions on the island while they waited, right? She pushed at his shoulder with a scoff. "You're full of yourself," she dismissed, rising to her feet faster than him to prove a point. She reconvened with her pile of clothes and pulled out her hair pins first to reset her buns as best she could. She'd kill for a hairbrush, but she wasn't interesting in scouring the island for pokemon bones. Not yet, anyways. "Pelipper's taking his time," she grumbled as the thought crossed her mind. [break][break]

He should be plenty fast with his tailwind. "You don't think..." Something happened to him, do you? She bit off the sentence before she could voice the full thought aloud. The philosophy of her fellow castaway could only go so far - she couldn't 'just be' forever. The island would drive her crazy first.

[attr="class","rosepost"]She scowled at the Growlithe comparison, flustered but struggling to defend against the comparison. She was perpetually in motion, chasing, and it was hard to stop and smell the roses or whatever when there was so much to do. [break][break]

Banished was a striking choice of words. Maybe the spiraling was self-inflicted punishment. She couldn't evaluate it clearly like this, exposed and vulnerable and far too open. She wasn't expecting him to really see her, and the realization that she let few people see her inner workings and her thoughts like this was humbling. For all their collective faults, Rex was good for her. Good to her, barring the insistence to spare that awful Gogoat. [break][break]

She wanted his thoughts, to even the playing field and feel less like she was under a microscope. "What do we do now?"

"And away we go!" Audino stood with his Ceruledge and used fireblast at the mechanical Tsareena, helping to cover their escape. She fled up the stairs quickly, which forked into a left and right hallway. "Whatever route, we just need to find our way down without suffering their wrath." She chose left on instinct, breaking into a full sprint at the sound of the Tsareenas' cries. Who knew how many would be here?[break][break]

At the end of the hall was some signage in a language she didn't know. But there was an elevator, filled with brass and gold elements that simultaneously reminded her of mine shafts and of steampunk novels. "Down it is," she murmured. Her Audino hadn't returned to her yet, so the fight of the Tsareenas must be a long one.

[attr="class","rosepost"]She felt sad for the machine in her hands. It had done its job in running for so long that it eventually ran out of juice. "I guess that was the power source?" She wasn't sure what to make of it. She put the pieces of the sphere down gently, feeling sentimental for an item she hadn't known about a minute ago. [break][break]

The entire pocket universe was seeming like a dressed-up graveyard. Broken toys and old, old bodies. She wasn't sure what to make of it. [break][break]

"And not a soul in this castle," she said with a growing suspicion. "And no sign of the creator of these gadgets." She turned to look at Silverio as they continued through the large hallway. "I don't know what to make of it all." They approached a large staircase moving upwards. "Maybe we'll find a bedroom or something." An old-timey painting of a family or the heir seemed to be long overdue in this giant castle. Isn't that the kind of decor they were supposed to have? [break][break]

She was too deep in thought to realize the methodical, mechanical footfalls that approached them from behind.

[attr="class","rosepost"]The Marill fled from Tinkatink, which only seemed to make the pokemon more antsy for violence. Keiko put some pep in her step to get closer to the pokemon. The fairy, however, saw the approach scurried out of the way faster. Keiko groaned. "Don't make me put you back in your pokeball..." She didn't want to do so since it felt punishing, but the fairy was too aggressive. Keiko felt only letting her out for battle would just reinforce the behavior, but it might be a lost cause altogether.
