"unfortunately, i hadn't had time to secure a water-type for myself, but i'm happy to help elsewhere." minjun had yet to catch a variety of pokemon, in all honesty, water-types prime among them. yet he will work hard to cover the weaknesses of his own person, anyway.[break][break]
then, as he searches through the extensive fields, minjun comes across an arbok, tyranitar, boltund, and girafarig, the four of them wandering about in the grass. it takes some doing, but as he approaches the pokemon, they are mostly willing to be re-captured once more. he wonders if they miss shalin terribly. he thinks about their sheer size, and wonders how they'd been able to grow this large to start with. nature truly is a marvel. as he sets upon catching them, he receives a message from none other than the elite ranger himself. "josh, minjun here. caught her boltund, girafarig, arbok, and tyranitar. going to circle through more of the fields to find more pokemon, over."[break][break]

he glances from absalom to the baked goods that the younger ranger is handling. a small smile presents itself on minjun's face. "i'm glad to hear it." he had been on the other side of a food drive before, and his childhood self had been happy just to see all sorts of tasty treats around. but the parents and non-parents alike would be happy for a moment's reprieve. life is full of all sorts of responsibilities and tasks, and nothing is more alleviating than making short work of them. [break][break]
knowing they'd help the people is enough for minjun. and having absalom help him is icing on the cake. he wished he'd been as proactive as absalom at his age. minjun had been an older teenager when he finally decided to travel outside of his home. his enactment into ranger life wouldn't come until much later, either. [break][break]
there's a lot of hope to be found in seeing someone as young as absalom take up such selfless causes. "with you helping out? i'm sure we'll do great." he doesn't imagine there will be a lot of traffic on their end today, but one can never be too sure. the promise of food in any form attracts people in droves. "it's just about time to start. let me know if you need anything at all. don't hesitate to ask me, even if it gets busy."[break][break]

he sucks in a breath, and follows nick's lead out of the brush. initially, the two of them are ignored by the pokemon, as it seems the two different clans are utterly engrossed in maintaining this stand-off — only calm enough until someone throws the first punch. [break][break]
such a sight saddens minjun. the pokemon near agate village had been relatively tame, and even then, the small community had been filled with retired rangers, trainers, and other experts in asserting authority. it was almost as if the earth itself was afraid of angering the experienced residents of that small town. [break][break]
but here in hoenn, things are decidedly different. while these pokemon may not understand the turmoil going on outside of their borders, the conflicts inside are no less earth-shattering to them. it would make sense that the two outsiders are not received well (or, if nick's crestfallen expression is to go by, at all). [break][break]
"...yes, but not entirely good ones." his childhood may have been too idyllic to call upon in this moment, but his adolescence was a different experience entirely. everywhere around the world, people and pokemon need help. these primeape and passimian are no different from that. [break][break]
he turns to nick and says, "right now, we're a non-factor to them. we might need to do something bolder to get their attention." but still nonviolent, because the last thing minjun wanted to do was go up against two entire clans of fighting-type pokemon, regardless of which species they were. "i could have my corvisquire fly in and interrupt them for a moment. what do you think?" [break][break]

she's just as nervous as he is. minjun is certain of it. clearly, he'd caught her at a bad an awkward time. clearly, it would've been better if he never approached her at all. [break][break]
"the roads are still dangerous. i'm sorry about your tire." he wants to say something like, i could help you with that, but instead bites his tongue. it's not that he couldn't actually help her, because he could, but because he knows he shouldn't. [break][break]
he never could play dumb when it counted most. perhaps that's what separates him from the other more experienced rangers before him: captain Elise Calcifet , for one, who'd been nothing but calm and unaffected in every instance he'd seen her, or elite ranger Josh Devlin , for another, who'd been diligent and straightforward in stressful situations like this one, both of them unmoved by misplaced sympathy or thoughts of indecision that minjun now faces. [break][break]
it's a familiar sentiment: if only you could be more like them. if he could even channel a fraction of their strength in this moment, then that would be enough to get him through.[break][break]
he doesn't notice the guns — either the ones in the trunk or the one tucked away from view behind rosemary's figure — but he doesn't have to. this strange dance of electric anxiety and doubtful shadows comes to an end the moment that rosemary speaks a second time. "i see." his heart sinks to his stomach. he doesn't want trouble, either. [break][break]
but he can't let her go so easily. "and what if you didn't have any cargo?" a disparate wish born of a divided heart. he blames team rocket for a lot of things, but leaving involved parties with their hands tied is not one of them. "neither of us could do what the others expect of us, and yet..." [break][break]
minjun's corvisquire trusts this woman even less than he does. the bird narrows its eyes, putting up a scary face in an attempt to scare her off. a warning. "i feel like that's not the case for us." [break][break]

"oh..." minjun becomes quiet at the sight of a rarity: a shiny fennekin, in the flesh. he'd never encountered a shiny pokemon on his own before, though he'd seen plenty of them in trainers' care throughout his travels around the world. he doesn't think the color of one's pokemon appearance has too much bearing on it as an individual, however. [break][break]

but he would be lying if he said he didn't have any desire to add this fennekin to his team. fire-type pokemon are exceedingly useful, after all. and perhaps this one would grow to be a little less mischievous than the scovillain he currently has. "hello, there. would you like to come with us? we live very busy lives, but i'd do my best to take care of you." [break][break]

the fennekin is not as brilliant as a delphox would be, but there is a glimmer of curiosity and recognition in the fennec fox's eyes that tells minjun she is willing to come along with him for now. he throws a safari ball, but lets the fox wander outside of it once the capture is complete. "let's see what else is out here, together." [break][break]

minjun remembers many lamentations and lectures given on the subject of nature, and the loss of it through human selfishness. this variant of corsola serves as a grim reminder that humans affect the planet just as much — if not more — than pokemon do. they owe it to all life on earth to be as generous and mindful as possible. [break][break]

seeing the ghost-type pokemon toddle around, silent as death itself, the ranger says, "let's not bother it anymore than we have to. this way, friends." and his team of pokemon follow his command, though it takes extra effort to move scovillain along. it desperately wants to play with the ghost, it seems. [break][break]

it's been a long time since minjun had new pokemon to call his own. he often works with pokemon due to his occupation, but seldom does he catch companions for himself. murkrow, corvisquire, and sawsbuck had all been lifelong friends of minjun's. the scovillain that wandered its way into minjun's campsite one day is the newest addition to the team. [break][break]

"i hope we'll be able to make some good friends while in the safari zone." minjun speaks to his pokemon freely; the autumn breeze cool against the dying summer sun. "come along. let's see what awaits us out there." [break][break]

"josh, it's an honor to work alongside you. please call me minjun." the other's reputation precedes him, as do many more of his fellow rangers. yet the moment initial pleasantries are exchanged, his smile fades into knife-like precision. a dark gaze travels over the vast fields laid before them, the sounds of re-capturing echoing in the distance. [break][break]

it truly is a testament to shalin nariya's dedication as a pokemon trainer. nearly one hundred pokemon, all cared and raised with purpose. yet with their trainer gone (i hope she can be safely returned to us), it was up to rangers like minjun to round them up. knowing they'll be in captain elise's care puts him at ease. he just hopes he can do his part like everyone else. [break][break]

"understood. i'll do my best to catch as many as i can." a task which he suspects will go much easier with josh's pyroar at their sides. or in this case, beneath their saddles. [break][break]

minjun's father had once said to him, if it's not safe everywhere, then it's not safe anywhere. as a child, minjun would insist that this was just his father's paranoid way of looking at the world and nothing else. now, as a grown man, minjun sees the truth in his father's words. [break][break]

nowhere in hoenn is safe from team rocket. even in the quietest of nights, there are people plotting in the shadows, or looking to bring about change (good or bad seemingly doesn't matter anymore, just that something changes at all). and yet, a small reprieve in the fighting is not enough to grant mercy to those who are tangled in the war's tragic webs. minjun won't be satisfied until he's sure that no one will need his help tonight. [break][break]

his greatest concern is that civilians will get themselves into trouble at this hour. though every part of him wants to stop moving and rest, he can't convince himself that it's time for a break. [break][break]

thankfully, his bird pokemon have better eyesight than he ever will. his corvisquire scans for threats from the air, and soon enough signals with a sharp cry that something (or someone) is up ahead. minjun sees a car pulled off to the side of the road, together with a stranger who appraises the damage done to the tires. minjun approaches the scene cautiously, but the sound of the running engine, coupled with the stench of burnt rubber, tells him this accident happened recently. [break][break]

sympathy swells in his chest. before the war, it was stressful enough to deal with issues like these. now, during tumultuous times, minjun can't imagine what an inconvenience like that would do to anyone's nerves, including his own. "are you alright? my pokemon couldn't help but notice the commotion." he speaks softly, so as not to startle the stranger any more than he already might have, yet it doesn't take long for his genuine concern to bleed into mild suspicion, instead. [break][break]

"but it's not entirely safe to be out here alone." unless you're not the type of person who's worried about being safe, in the first place. and while minjun is focused on appraising the other for injuries or signs of stress, his eyes can't help but wander towards the backseats, and inevitably, the trunk. [break][break]

he tries not to get ahead of himself, he really does. and yet... [break][break]

I put a little too much thought into this one. Of course, my father would prefer if I kept up certain traditions. If it were up to him, my daughter would be named Minju and my son would be named Minhyuk. But if I had kids, I would want their names to be distinct from one another. I like the names Hayoung, Jihyo, Dawon, Mina, Seolhyun, Jisung, Haneul, and Yunjin. Other names I'd like to use are Noah, Mari(y)a, Win, Ven, Rose, Sky, Windy. If I could list a hundred names related to plants or nature, I would. There are too many lovely names out there to choose from...

"If you were to be able to put down everything you were doing, no strings attached, all loose ends tied cleanly, what'd be a nice retirement plan? Any holiday destinations or a bucket list?"

Having lived most of my life in forested areas, I think I would choose to retire somewhere completely different. Maybe near a beach. I could spend hours fishing. But I wouldn't mind living in a more urban area, either. I would move close to a city center so I could be within walking distance of all my favorite museums and art galleries. It feels like I could live a thousand lives in one, given the chance.

If I had to pick one... maybe my eyes? I haven't been sleeping well recently, though.

Tea and coffee. I used to drink more coffee than tea, but L-theanines in tea are healthier and give the high of caffeine without the anxiety jitters. At least in my experience.

i'm glad that the pumpkaboo are well-cared for, is the first thing minjun thinks when he appraises the pumpkaboo before him. whether big or small, every last ghostly gourd on the farm looks happy, and that's all anyone can ask for these days. [break][break]

that said, he had participated in similar guessing games in the past before, and had been wildly wrong each time. would this add on to his long list of losses, or would it finally break the losing streak? only one way to find out. [break][break]

he resists the urge to look over people's shoulders and glance at their guesses, instead folding the slip of paper in his hands intricately once he's finished writing down his answer. "here goes."

the fortune-teller in her booth is so popular, she has to see two people at a time. minjun only wishes he were as pragmatic as he seemed, but the truth is simple and plain: having grown up in agate village, he'd been exposed to plenty of wives' tales and superstitions, and puts some stock in the divine. which is to say, he is as curious as anyone else about the starry-eyed fortune teller and her ways. but if his fortune is to be told in a pair reading, why not speak to the person next to him in line? "have you ever gotten your fortune told before?" an innocent enough question to ask. "everyone says good things about this fortune teller, but i guess we'll have to see it for ourselves." "okay. this looks good." minjun mutters quietly to himself as he finishes up organizing the tables filled with fresh fruits, veggies, and other produce. all locally grown, all made possible by the community gardens in oldale town. this organic food drive has all the makings to be successful. [break][break]

and he hopes it really will be. in a region stricken with conflict and strife, everyone everywhere could use a taste of normalcy. that, and a gentle reminder that the league and its affiliated rangers are still the capable force that people think they are. it's easy to fall into despair, especially during difficult times. it's harder to hold onto hope. [break][break]

but with a fellow ranger helping him out today, minjun feels confident that all will go well. "how are things looking on your end, absalom?" he speaks gently to the other, so as not to startle him with the sudden inquiry.
