Jean stands ankle deep in the shallow waters around Pacifidlog Town, her index finger and thumb holding tightly to the bridge of her nose as her Pawmi tries to avoid her gaze. [break][break]
“Pawmi…” she starts, cutting herself off to sigh. Again. [break][break]
“I am begging you to be more aware of your surroundings. You almost drowned. Heck, you almost got taken out by a Magikarp for Arceus’ sake!” [break][break]
Her Pokémon puffs its cheeks out defiantly, and Jean turns to look at her Frogadier for support. Frogadier looks at her with sympathy before also avoiding her gaze, causing Jean to groan and rustle her fringe with frustration. [break][break]
She’d decided to take her two Pokémon on her expedition in hopes of having some protection while checking the water levels, but she had realised too late that Pawmi was an awful swimmer. This was the third time in an hour she’d had to lift the small Pokémon from underneath the waves, and she was beginning to wonder if she needed to drop everything to teach him how to doggy paddle. [break][break]
“This is pointless. I’ll never be able to check the pH levels of the water at this rate… Just- ” [break][break]
Before she can finish, Jean’s eyes shoot upwards at a flash of silver that begins to home in on her general direction. She narrows her eyes before cursing under her breath, pushing her Pokémon to the side and submerging herself into the water with a loud splash. [break][break]
The ninja star misses by an inch. [break][break]
“Shit! You two okay?” she coughs, sitting up and lifting Pawmi onto her lap who dramatically flails about. She shields her eyes from the sun and looks towards the direction which the ninja star had come from, scrunching her brow at the figure before yelling out. [break][break]
“Hey! You might wanna learn how to aim that thing. You almost just took out my eye!” [break][break]

She finds herself a stool to sit down on, releasing a sigh as she relaxes her limbs. A certain burn on her forehead throbs and she rubs it with edge of her palm. Glancing over at Mirabel, her eyes widen at her flushed cheeks and Jean stammers, waving her hand dismissively. [break][break]
“No, no! Please don’t apologise. It’s fine. You’re not stupid,” she cracks a lopsided smile. [break][break]
“If anyone’s stupid here it’s me. I got me and Frogadier in this situation in the first place. Should have learnt my lesson and left that damn Charizard alone.” [break][break]
She takes in a sharp breath, trying to shake away the guilt of accidentally upsetting someone. She really needed to be better at cracking jokes, especially in situations like this.[break][break]
Thinking of a way to change the conversation, Jean raises her eyebrows in surprise at Mirabel’s words. [break][break]
“ Oh really? I mean, of course, we need medicines and things but… Why did I think they were in separate places…” She scratches her chin, contemplating, then shrugs nonchalantly. Having them in the same place was more convenient anyway. [break][break]
“Yeah, of course. I’d appreciate that. I can handle it. Can’t hurt anymore than being actually burned, right?” [break][break]
She rolls her shoulders back and grits her teeth, preparing. [break][break]
“You been working here long, or?” she asks, hoping being distracted will help with the pain.

At Elise’s arrival, Jean does a cub scout salute in her general direction. [break][break]
“Ambassador Captain, Maam. Bern. The pleasure is all mine.” She smiles, genuine and toothy. [break][break]
Jean follows the ambassador’s gaze. [break][break]
“It is. I wonder how old this thing is? A thousand? A thousand and one?” she tilts her head to the side and looks over at Elise. “Your cousin? Wow, I bet they know–” [break][break]
Her words are cut short at the sudden interruption of two Pokémon, the shrill nose of the Trumbeak taking her attention away from their conversation. Her eyes brighten at the sight of the bird Pokémon, completely ignoring the Honedge, and she throws her thumb over her shoulder towards the creature. [break][break]
“A Trumbeak. I’ll take this one Miss, you take the other.” [break][break]
Jean turns, points a singular finger towards the Pokémon, and with a dramatic hyuh, Staryu launches into the air. It shoots a WATER GUN towards the Trumbeak, the Pokémon responding with a squawk of surprise, slamming down onto the floor. [break][break]
“Nice Staryu! Now TACKLE! [break][break]
She grabs a Poke ball from her belt, throwing it once in the air as her Staryu smashes its body into the dazed Trumbeak before its able to stand back up. Muttering an apology to the Pokémon, she throws the ball and watches it envelope into a flash of red. Three rolls, and a click. [break][break]
She gives her Pokémon a thumbs up. [break][break]
“Aced it!” [break][break]
She looks over her shoulder at her partner. [break][break]
“All good, Miss?”

The sun beats down as Jean potters about in her garden one afternoon. She wipes a bead of sweat from her forehead that threatened to meet her eyes and pulls another weed out of the path with tense of her muscles. Gardening was truly tiring in the heat. [break][break]
Reaching for another weed, her eyes suddenly meet the brown gaze of a creature in the undergrowth. Noticing her gaze, it scurries further into the bush before popping its head out far to Jean’s right. A Pawmi. And it was eyeing her plants. [break][break]
Jean’s heart lurches. [break][break]
“Stop!” She scrambles to her feet, tripping over her watering can and spilling the liquid across the path as she reaches for the Pawmi. It's claws reach for her newly planted seeds. [break][break]
Her fingers wrap around the Pokemon’s body, causing it to yelp with surprise as she picks it up and holds it out in front of her. It wiggles, restless and frustrated, before calming to meet Jean’s amused gaze. [break][break]
“You don’t want to eat that, trust me. They taste like shit.” [break][break]
It stares back at her blankly and Jean cracks a smile. The little guy was adorable. [break][break]
“I’ll give you some actual food if you don’t go for my plants. Deal?” [break][break]
The Pawmi blinks, it’s nose twitching. [break][break]
“I’ll take that as your way of saying ‘That sounds great Jean, thanks!’” She laughs to herself, retrieving a Poke ball from her pocket and gently pressing it to the Pawmi’s head. [break][break]
“In here first, though.” [break][break]
She watches it disappear into a flash of red as it enters the ball and is thankful to hear the satisfying click of capture. Latching the ball to her belt, she stretches and looks behind over her shoulder at her house. [break][break]
“Seems its time for lunch.” [break][break]

She follows Maribel through the door, holding out her Frogadier to her so she can help easier. She watches as she immediately begins to work, impressed that she knows what all the potions and medicines even do. It was her job to know, Jean considered inwardly, but it must be a lot to remember.[break][break]

“In its ball?” Jean’s eyebrows scrunch together before realisation dawns on her face and her eyes widen. [break][break]

“Shit! I should have done that sooner, shouldn’t I?” [break][break]

Readjusting her grip on her Frogadier, she pulls out the Poké Ball in her pocket. She’d forgotten that was the best place for them to be when hurt. She’d been too overwhelmed with worry to realise. [break][break]

“Sorry girl.” She clicks the red button, transporting her Pokémon inside, and hands the ball over. [break][break]

Knowing her Pokémon was in good hands, Jean leans her body against the door frame and takes a deep breath. At Maribel’s question, she points a finger at herself, confused. [break][break]

“Me?” [break][break]

She looks down at herself, lifting one scorched arm, then the other, and notes the tears and holes in her shirt across her torso. She grimaces as pain aches across her body before shooting the girl a wry smile. [break][break]

“Everywhere?” She responds sheepishly. [break][break]

“I’ll be alright. Frogadier was my priority. I can just slap some oil on the burns or something when I get home. Plus, do you even have things for people here? Isn’t it all… Pokémon stuff?”

Elliot (better known as Jean) is your typical no-brain-all-muscle-do-gooder ranger. Growing up by the sea, she lives and breathes nature conservation and strives to better the world, help others, and put a stop to Rocket’s schemes. While not the brightest, she always has the best intentions at heart, and has the occasional super-power of being wise beyond her years – which she, of course, will never realise.

Yet, with a heart big enough for the whole of Hoenn, and a seemingly permanent smile etched into her lips, it’s difficult to believe that her demeanour hides demons from a past she cannot seem to let go of.

Each step hurts as Jean makes her way across the streets of Mauville. After a Pokemon encounter in the outer routes of the city, she found herself burnt, bruised, and regretful. She had known she was in over her head, yet she had still taken the risk. And now she needed medical support. Fast. [break][break]

“Crap,” she winces as her Frogadier rolls in her arms, their leg brushing over a burn on her arm causing Jean to stumble slightly. She clenches her jaw. [break][break]

“Hold tight girl. We’re almost there.” [break][break]

With a shove, she pushes the Life Dew Pharmacy’s door open with her shoulder, a jingle sounding above her alerting those inside of her presence. She peers across the room to see a young woman by the counter and makes her away across as quickly as she can. [break][break]

“Excuse me. Miss,” she grimaces, scrunching her face at the pain spreading across her own body. She knew she looked like hell. Charred and blackened with soot and burns. But the creature in her arms mattered more, and she needed to know they were okay before focusing on herself. [break][break]

“My Frogadier. She’s hurt. Do you have anything that could help?” She stands in front of the counter, her arms cradling her friend tightly as she attempts to pull together a friendly albeit pained smile.

“Bloody hell, it’s windy,” Jean holds her hand out in front of her face, the wind whipping around her and swirling her hair into a blur of orange as she stands by the entrance to Sky Pillar.[break][break]

She cranes her neck into an uncomfortable position to truly take it in and blows out a breath. It was incredible. The monument towered above her, the intense fog hanging around its walls causing the top of it to disappear into the sky. It was incredible to see it up close. Surreal. Like something out of folklore. [break][break]

She looks down at her Staryu, her Pokemon’s expressionless form seemingly also taking in the structure before them, tilting its body as if peering up. If they had eyes, she imagines they would be wide, and the thought cracks a smile across her lips.[break][break]

“Ready for this, bud?” she asks her Pokemon. [break][break]

"Once she gets here, we're going straight in."
