it took some adjusting, but patrol no longer raises hackles or coerces a display of teeth.

the pulses of noise drifting out from the crowds, the constant movement of masses all shifting around each other, the familiar and damning sensation of a target still painted on her back.

six months and she doesn't flinch when there's a loud noise. a year and she stops holding the gun in its holster.
