oh. oh no. the raichu was kind of expecting a reaction like this, but in reality it's even worse than he expected. thankfully, the meowstic appears in front of them at exactly the right moment. fondue's round head nodding in thanks at the intervention.

"yeah. work stuff." vera waves it off with her hand, as if to add another label: unimportant stuff. not quite, but she doesn't want to bore the boy with her complaints.

surprisingly, razz has a lot of advice for her. the surprise comes at his reason for having said advice to share. "sorry to hear that." if sending a kid out to fend for himself isn't a cruel form of parenting, she doesn't know what is. even her own issues can't compare.

on the other hand, his mother's actions did give him the tools to deal with this challenge. a silver lining, she supposes. as for vera, luck and a degree in chemistry were on her side.

"i've managed! my rotom helped me make some glass bottles, and we've been distilling water to-" vera's words are cut short by the sight of a whole army of ledians at the edge of the forest. and, in their hands, "spears? where did they get those from?"

a buzzing sound begins to ring in her ears. first coming from a single ledian, a thin but alarming sound, and then from everywhere at once. it's a bad omen through and through.

"fondue, set up a barrier!" the alolan raichu turns towards the imminent danger and does as requested:

it turns out bumping into each other would be the least of the pair's worries. before vera can answer the man's question, or even introduce herself, she feels the soft scratch of two little paws on her hair.

it doesn't stop there. looking up, the ginger notices the pale underside of cape-like arms, so characteristic of an emolga, gliding toward's the man's hair. her mouth opens, ready to say something even though there are no words she can find that are good enough to express her surprise. and then, before any words do make their way to her tongue, the emolga is gone.

laughter fills the air. it is all the reaction she can offer afterwards. bright and bubbly. "well, this is turning out to be quite a first meeting. i'm fine. what about you this time? did the emolga scratch your scalp?" the chuckle ends where her questions begin.

vera's laughter comes easily and generously. it's the chuckle of an optimist with a lot of warmth and joy to share.

the flying rock startles her, and for a moment she expects to meet someone else hiding between trees or behind a rock. once she realizes it's the meowstic, her shoulders relax once more. she turns to the darker-colored cat, to whom she raises her voice. "nice to meet you too, salem!"

fondue inches closer to the zeraora in a silent sign of agreement. he doesn't mind his tail being touched by the pair of curious paws. however, when it comes to letting the zeraora aboard, he hesitates.

the raichu raises both of its arms to his cheeks and shakes his head. he has never done such a thing before. it could be dangerous.

vera fully intends to take advantage of her front seat to the exchange, until the so-called desert island challenge is brought up. "ah... yeah, i guess i am. i kinda lost a bet." to make matters worse, she hadn't even signed up for said bet. but enough of that; she'd ranted enough already to her girlfriend back home.

true enough, the spinarak makes a u-turn as soon as it loses sight of its targets. vera feels herself sigh, and no sooner has relief washed over her, does she notice the little rodent with its head tilted to a side in question and both hands reaching inside its pockets. "jackpot." her words are muttered to herself, eyes firmly fixed on the morpeko's cute face.

until its characteristic hunger issues kick in, its face morphs into an angry scowl, and the color of its fur changes to a deep purple. uh-oh.

vera's reaction is quick. she's prepared for this. from her pockets, a pokéblock case is produced, and its contents dropped in front of the wild pokémon. wary, it sniffs the brightly colored pokéblocks before venturing a lick. an entire case later, it's finally content. it rubs its belly in a sign of fullness, and turns to the human who'd so graciously fed it.

"you're welcome," she laughs, taking a tentative seat next to it. "you know, i'd heard of how voracious you little guys were, but i actually didn't expect it to be this bad." the chuckle reveals a lesson learned for the chemist. "i do have a lot more from where those came from, though. what do you say?"

somewhere between colorful stalls, parked foodtrucks and the occasional amusement park attraction, a young woman stops to admire the view. the sun is beginning to set, which means the strings of led lights hanging above and around her will take over the warm late summer sun rays. the switch is gradual: first one side of the night market, and then another, and another, until the whole place lifts up.

vera may have stood for only a moment, but even that short moment is enough to obstruct the normal flow of market visitors. she pulls back, surprise evident on her face and the gasp that escapes her lips, quickly followed by profuse apologies. "i'm so sorry! are you okay? i wasn't looking, please forgive me."

the rotom's modus operandi differs slightly from the others'. while most of cadet's coworkers used their various powers to move structures, or create structures, or change the condition of structures, cadet uses itself for the job. by possessing large walls of reinforced concrete and metal and many other components that it could list in order of most to least common, cadet could make them levitate and leave them in the exact position they needed to be, before moving on to the next wall.

her second encounter in the safari zone sneaks past her feet playfully, before turning around and circling her. "why, hello there," she laughs. vera wastes no time to greet the shinx. though she already has a very sweet luxray in her team, the ginger figures she loses nothing by befriending another pokémon of the same species to keep him company. he'd probably like that. she could be like his protegée.

crouching down, she offers the shinx a friendly hand, for her to take whenever she felt comfortable doing it. hopefully it wouldn't take long though, her arm could grow sore from being maintained in the same position.
