She's human. [break][break]

A cowardly, fearful, tired, hypocritical human. [break][break]

But is she supposed to tell him that? Can she tell him that? Daphne, you were never so close with your siblings - it's never to late to start, but there's always a time and a place. What is it that wells up in her chest? What's this nausea that wells in her stomach? Why does it feel like there's a weight on her shoulders, and her heart? (The dead crawl and grab at her ankles, and her knees, and she has to remind herself that she's being selflessly hypocritical; isn't that also a form of selfishness?)[break][break]

"You're right." she's speaking, but in the usual tone - icy and distant, it's become a bit of a habit - as her gaze falls back to the grave. Still, her nails dig into the palm of her hand as the stress (and the frustration, and the boiling anger well) accumulates. "But I still--" she wants to say, and continue to say, but she can't do that here. [break][break]

She hates that he's right, hates that she's being unreasonable, hates that she's acting so childishly. So, before she can say much else, her shoulders raise as the tension leaves her hand. "I just.. don't want anyone else dying." instead, she gently bites her lip with her brows furrowed. [break][break]

Then, deep hued eyes meet his. [break][break]

"... Not like Alex, or dad."

No, she wants to say, he didn’t. [break][break]

But she won’t, because Daphne doesn’t like conflict, nor is she one for it. Always quiet, but when did she start allowing other people’s words to be spoken over her own? When did she, a proud Stone, start becoming so quiet and meek that it’s become an icon of shame? [break][break]

Maybe she was always like this, and only now she’s embracing it. [break][break]

“And I did, by participating in that god forsaken–..!” she catches herself before her voice raises, and she only now realizes how hard she’s been clutching her fist. The nails have embedded marks in her skin, and the somber air of the graves is what brings her back. How ironic. [break][break]

“I would do the same, but–” she nearly chokes on her words, yet her gaze still wavers as her nails begin to dig. Again. “... I don’t want to lose more family. Not like that.” [break][break]

Alex had a duty - but what was it? To die a meaningless death in a war that was waged upon humanity and Hoenn as it was? To fall from the sky, into the sea, without her knowing what happened to him? To die a death that was so unfitting of a man so revered to be a hero, and still be called one in his grave, saying he died with honor? [break][break]

But who was she to decide? Only Alex could do that. [break][break]

And Alex was dead.

Yes, everything will work out; because it always does. [break][break]

Whether it be in her power, or not. There’s no need to sour the taste in her mouth when she thinks about what happens when it doesn’t, so she simply bites her tongue along with the forkful of food she’d hurriedly reached to bring to her lips. The hand on her back is stable reassurance, and she finds the stressed hand gradually relaxing in his hold, as her fingers are warmly cradled between his. For a moment, her anxiety melts away as her body relaxes. [break][break]

There’s perfectly good food in front of her, and it’d be a shame for the dinner he so painstakingly prepared to go cold with all of their talking. Her lips let out a soft hum as a small smile comes to her lips. As usual, his cooking is delightful. It’s savory, sweet, with just enough spice to bring it all together. Though she tries to follow the same recipe, she can never make food taste the same, and she wonders: how does he do it? [break][break]

“.. Mhm, we can think about it later.” she hums, though it’s likely that she won’t want to bring it back up, lest she sour the mood, even if he insists otherwise. Instead, this time, to ease her heart and put on a lighter hearted air, she holds a forkful up of the food, eyes smiling as she gazes towards him with the silverware in hand. He has his own food, but that doesn’t stop her from offering a bite of her own.

Through truth did come disagreement. [break] [break]

He was noble and his sacrifice will never be forgotten. His death has caused a ripple throughout Hoenn and the people he’s ever worked with, and the company that was passed along to him, and she knows, deep somewhere in her, she’d have done the same - despite her thoughts, and the hardened glare towards the mound of dirt that covers the coffin six feet under.[break] [break]

“He didn’t.” the words come from her lips before her mind can keep up, as a hardened gaze and clench of her teeth are what keep the rest of her words rolled up in her mind. “Don’t do the same as him.” because if only they knew; his death could have been avoided - or maybe she’s looking and clawing for another thing to cling on, to keep herself from the repeated thoughts and scenes that goes through her head. [break] [break]

Speaking ill of the dead isn’t something she’ll wallow in, so her gaze turns to the side, eyeing her little brother shortly after the soft, and slightly stern words had left her lips. In eyes of blue-tinted green, the image of a man reflects back (pleading, desperate and afraid), her brows lower, and her lips are curled into a defeated smile as she tilts her head to respond[break] [break]

“Please.”

"about me?" she cocks her head, a hum following her words as she narrows a deeper hue of forest green eyes. she can't say her days have been more eventful, but maybe it's a bit more exciting than what's silph been doing with devon.[break][break]

"more fashion work." she smiles, walking into the building with sister in tow. "creating more lines, more outfits, more of.. a lot of things." she muses onwards, though pauses, only to idly eye some of the mannequins on display. "although.. i'm at a bit of a loss lately."

her disappointment is immeasurable and her day is ruined, but it's still because of the sad meatloaf that had a chunk bitten out of it. the second was because her dear brother here couldn't understand the terms she was using (which, fair enough, but also this is her way of one-upping him in sibling banter. do you have any idea he's spoken tech, only to leave her in the dust? it's made her feel older than she actually was). [break][break]

a hand raises to hook and rest beneath her ear, and around the side of her neck as she lets out a soft, and slightly nervous chuckle. "to be honest.." an eye closes, almost as she feigns a slight wince "i am.. a little bit nervous." the woman's lips curl into a small smile as her eyes glance back down to the basket. "i've done collaborations before, but we don't have a model we can both decide on.." the anxiety turns into a sigh pretty quickly. [break][break]

"this collection is for the winter, but finding a model while the region is like this is a little.." she pauses "... difficult."

why? it's not because he's untrustworthy, not because she doesn't have faith in him; it's because promises are easily broken, even if she knows that he wouldn't if he could help it. many people wouldn't break a promise if they could help it (though maybe a select few she's met have been willing, and only swore their word to those naive enough to believe lies that come from their mouths).[break][break]

she isn't used to being so fragile, not when standing as a cracking pillar is all she's ever known. there's a brief silence following his response, though it's in her thought that she's mulling it over, and processing, and debating (and convincing herself that it's true, and nothing will happen again. nothing that violent, or heart-wrenching will happen, right?) before she finally caves, and she reaches up instead to gently peck his cheek. when she pulls back, she's wearing a small, weak, slightly defeated smile. [break][break]

"good~.." she says, pulling away from his arm so she can scoot closer to the edge of their seat, towards their plates of dinner. "i'd better not hear anything devastating from the news, or the hospital~.." she hums. [break][break]

she's been thinking about it, though, and it's only natural that this region will only see more calamities. so much has happened in these few short years, after all. [break][break]

"... i hope things can be more peaceful in hoenn, soon."

graves litter the premises, but daphne's never really paid much attention to any of them, save for the one of heir precious brother. when she thinks about it, wasn't their father's grave also not too far away from here? she should visit sometime, though she was never all too close with father - it feels wrong not to visit. like father like son, to some extent - both of them dying to some other force, and neither a natural death. [break][break]

if there's anything she wishes she could give them both, it'd be the reassurance that everything will turn out okay. [break][break]

so loathe is she to admit that it's her siblings taking up a mantle she cracked under; she tries not to think about it. "the worst part is that you're probably right." she hums in response, a small smile making to her lips (and it isn't genuine, but she's trying, with her little brother's attempt to lighten the mood). "i imagine that he's beside himself, now" she starts, beginning to crouch and rest her elbows against her knees, keeping a gaze on the stone plating resting atop of a dirt mound. [break][break]

".. seeing how everyone has grown up to pursue their own passions, and their own lives, outside of devon." they were all bound to devon somehow, let it be by name or birthright "and he'd probably be one of the first to jump at the meteor in a heartbeat~" through her musing, she knows, he really would throw his life again. [break][break]

and she'll beat down the more selfish requests into the depths of her heart.

although she doesn't hold anything against the siblings, moreso than she dislikes the current head of the company. a woman smiles, softly, as she begins to nuzzle the lower half of her face against a man in a soft caress. she knows he doesn't much know or enjoy the talks of business, even though this is what's been weighing on her. "mhm.." she hums in response, though now with fatigue that came in the aftermath of letting her heart spill over. he's always doing these things for her, and she's starting to wonder what she could do for him - he always looked so happy with her anyways - in spite of his still busy schedule. but they've strayed far. [break][break]

and her arm raises to twine her fingers with his against her cheek, digits slipping between as she holds his hand against he, in warm embrace. she sighs. [break][break]

there was always a bit of tension. [break][break]

no matter how she loves her family, it always felt difficult talking to them; maybe it was the seemingly cold and cutthroat air she's put around herself, maybe that's why she's found it so difficult to bond. maybe it's because she's always wanted to drop formalities around siblings, and never really enjoyed being called 'sister'. though she has to remind herself that she also puts up that wall herself. [break][break]

she's never always thought like this; was it after alex's death? daphne is sick and tired of being called a title, and maybe it's the grief that's never learned to settle after her loss of devon (to a man self-proclaiming himself to be a best friend; and she doesn't understand how delusional he can be to call himself that). [break][break]

they arrive at the gravestone, and she remembers the time when the coffin was lowered into the tomb. his body was mangled - and the coffin was closed. though the people did their best, there was no saving a man who died from a high fall into the water to drown. it irks her, knowing that she doesn't know the exact cause of death. how had he suffered? [break][break]

silence is deafening until his words cut through the air, and there's a freeze to the blonde woman's solemnity - did he regret it? [break][break]

she can't speak for the dead when he's already gone, but she'll keep her gaze fixated on the headstone as she's gathering her thoughts. silence is drawn out, until she finally parts her lips with a soft "no" in response. he was always a kind man, and always a loving one - he would give anything and everything to the region at the drop of a hat. [break][break]

"if there's anything he regretted," she starts, lifting her arms to hold onto one another ".. it was for leaving behind the people he loved." and a defeated smile comes to her lips as her brows press down, slightly. he was always a righteous one, and an idealistic one. it runs in the family.

she grimaces at the addressing, but bites her tongue and says nothing.[break][break]

'brother' and 'sister' were always so formal, like she's speaking to family while they're in the middle of a business meeting. frankly, it's no different to her addressing someone by their surname over their first name in a professional setting. although maybe this is her distaste for business creeping in, and maybe it's the slight reluctance for formalities. she'll take in a deep breath, and let out a soft sigh instead as they begin to walk. "mhm.." she hums, arms crossed under her chest as they walk along the dirt trail, with the countless headstones passing by in her peripheral. "ana said that she would be busy, and.." her eyes turn up towards the sky, to the dome that encapsulates hoenn like a pokeball. is this what imprisonment feels like? [break][break]

".. mother and our other siblings will be paying respects from home." the last time she saw them was at alex's funeral, but even then, they didn't stay for long. mother was devastated all the same. she wished that she could come visit the grave.
