By contrast to the Medicham, an Indeedee seemed much less intimidating. If anything, its deadpan stare was more of a nuisance to the chimera, but was it one that it would waste time on? Not when it had done so well so far. It looked back to gauge Annie’s thoughts, since she always wore them on her face. She was smiling, and had been since they’d passed the Medicham. That smile, he’d realised much too late, meant a lot. It didn’t want to see it disappear, especially not because of it. That felt… bad.

And so Frankie continued on. Hurried footsteps caught up to him, but they were too heavy to be the shunned Pokemon’s. It was Annie, her smile twice as big, stroking Frankie’s side as they kept walking. “You’ve been doing great, buddy! I can see you thinking hard about these things, so it’s great to see that you make the better choice every time.” She looked relieved. Frankie liked that too, it mused. Its eyes were trained on the road ahead, waiting for the next enemy to show itself, but the grunt he gave in reply was much more than Annie could have expected a few weeks before, so it kept her happy.

It had summoned its friend, a Medicham, to check out the chimera instead. The fighting-type managed to be several times more intimidating than the little lion, standing in a battle stance and glaring up at Frankie. The chimera glared back, as it always did. Annie stared too, but her look was more relaxed, with only a hint of concern in them. She wouldn’t give an order unless her beast lacked the restraint she’d taught it.

Their standoff lasted twenty seconds, but each second felt like five to the trainer. Both her and the wild Pokemon spent the whole time wondering – worrying – that the next second would be when Frankie tore his targets into ribbons… But the moment never came. Slowly, very hesitantly, it disengaged and kept walking. Annie released a breath she hadn’t realised she was holding and followed suit, keeping a careful eye on the Medicham in case it tried a surprise attack.

Bolt returned the Safari Ball to Annie’s awaiting palm. Her free hand ruffled her partner’s mane, and they continued on their journey. It took all of two minutes for the silence to bore the girl, and so her thoughts were voiced one more. “You know, I’ve been thinking… Me and you and Kit and Fortuna, we’ve been together for a long time, right?” The better part of two years, in fact. It felt like much longer because of the events that had marked their meetings, and the countless adventures they’d been on since then.

“Are you still… You know, happy?” Bolt looked her way, eyes narrowed into a confused look. It was an innocent question, but her tone was a cause for concern. It was doubtful; a far cry from the confidence she forced for every encounter. “Am I doing a good job?” Only her oldest partners were granted the ‘privilege’ of seeing uncertainty on the girl’s face. Bolt should have felt flattered, but instead… He turned away. A lack of response did little to ease the girl’s nerves, and it showed, if only he would look and see. She knew that the job she'd asked of him would take his attention (it probably on the wild Pokemon passing by), but the silence still stung.

Usually, Annie and her Pokemon would have to search for wild monsters, but Frankie’s presence prompted many to show themselves, mostly out of curiosity. Such was the case with the Litleo that jumped out of the bushes, wide eyes staring at whatever the Null was. Piercing eyes watched back, trying to remember its training. A front claw slowly raised to greet the Litleo, and tell it that it meant no harm. Either that was enough to sate its curiousity, or the chimera’s abyssal glare made it turn tail. Either way, the encounter didn’t last long.

Frankie was starting to come around to idea of ‘friendship time’. A life on the road allowed Annie plenty of time to bond with her buddies, which was great – a Type: Null needed the extra love. Months of work had worn it down from a cold, violent beast that struck out as it pleased, to a… mild, mostly tamed beast that only occasionally struck out. Still, there was one last test before Annie felt comfortable having him out with smaller, weaker members of the Camp. All he had to do was lead her through the route, following her orders and nothing more. No getting distracted by strange smells, no rushing to try and murder strange Pokemon.

It was easier said than done.

Dealing with one Annie was bad enough, but somehow she’d found the one person in Hoenn that thought she had good ideas. Tox looked back and forth between the pair, her amused look quickly being overcome by disbelief as she realised they were really going to make her do it. Even the Sharpedo looked ready to take on the hoard!

Tox groaned as best a Pokemon could, prompting Annie to get back down to her level. Toxapex were more legs than body, so the trainer only needed one finger to stroke her partner’s face. “Everybody’s sure you can do this except you! Especially me. I know you’ll be fine, as long as you show them your brave face.”

Tox grumbled something as a leg (with retracted spikes) nudged Annie’s hand out of the dome. That was as good as acceptance to the girl, who gave her Pokemon a thumbs-up as she stood up straight. “Everything’ll be fine. And if it isn’t fine, then one of you should scream for help!”

Tox crawled to a partner that looked much too kind to be a threat… But the same could be said for a lot of Annie’s Pokemon. A leg was raised in greeting, and then she jumped into the water, using all twelve legs to control her descent. It didn’t take long for the two to find themselves the audience of eight Mareanie, and by extension, the poor Corsola they were making meals out of. Tox barely got two words out before she felt the weight of their glares on her, judging her every movement. She was silent – and slowly sinking.

On the surface, Annie eyed Pokenger carefully. She always had a lot of questions about the world, but the masked fighter was a standout character even amongst the trainers she’d met. “So, er… Why do you, like, wear a costume? Do you wear that everywhere?”

Another purr indicated a precious Pokemon nearby. Annie knew the look in Bolt’s eyes when he turned to received orders. He had a request, and he’d earned the right to have it answered. “Go ahead, then, but be quick!” The Luxray started to stalk its prey – a difficult task, considering only one of them was small enough to hide in the brush, but Bolt had mastered the silent stalk years before. It wasn’t sound of sight that gave him away, but the shudder of Eevee’s anticipation. It raised a barrier around itself half a second before a superpowered claw would have hit it, saving it from the first strike. The barrier did nothing for the second: a Discharge that left the little beast paralysed and ripe for catching.

Bolt suddenly leapt forward, ready to take the brunt of an attack for his trainer… But that wasn’t exactly what hit him. The Life Dew did next to nothing, for he had no wounds to heal, but the warm sensation against his fur and the tiny Budew’s cheers told that it meant no harm. Still, it had given Annie a bit of a shock, and with a sigh of relief, she chuckled at the pair. For its efforts, the Budew earned a purr, and the pair went on their way.

Another Meowstic paid no mind, even when it glared daggers at the foreign prowler. Bolt had been with Annie far too long to pick fights with anything that wasn’t necessary for their goal, but the little Shinx that once was would have gladly taken up the challenge. “But you’re bigger now, aren’t you? All grown up. More mature.” Bolt didn’t offer a response – mostly because he had no idea where her train of thought had come from, but partly because he had a job to do.
