The girl slowly shook her head as the hint flew over it. “Frankie’s not much of a roamer. I think it prefers to watch and learn.” Indeed, her chimera had barely moved – even its eyes were still fixed on her. Only time and perseverance had taught her not to fear them. It probably didn’t mean any harm. Probably.

“The man, Cotillard… I didn’t know him for long. A few weeks, maybe. He hung around the parts of town most people avoided. He had me running… errands for him, and I guess he liked me. Or felt bad for me. Doesn’t really matter which,” she lied. Narrowed eyes told that the latter was definitely a sore spot for her. “So he’d give me these USBs for every job. Nothing on them but jumbled messes, but once everything I asked and put all the files on them together… It was like they fixed each other?” The intricacies of encryption were clearly lost on a girl like her.

“There were instructions. Parts, and how to use them. By the time I realised what it made, I was already almost done.” She could have stopped, she reminded herself, but curiosity compelled her to find out what the madman thought the fruits of her labour were worth. Guilt seeped into her voice as she finished. “And that’s how Frankie was born.” The beast killer offered no reaction, as always.

She didn’t get the chance. Bolt’s trill warned of another Eevee’s approach; both of them set their minds to the target. “Make it a quick one. You’re good at that.” His steps slowed to a halt. His glowing eyes watched the Eevee’s every movement. All at once, he pounced, fangs bared as he leapt across the field. They took hold of the Eevee as he landed, its futile struggles stopping once it was turned to face Annie… and the rapidly-approaching Pokeball.

Things seemed to be going to plan. None of the squatters could land a hit as long as Geist was nearby, just as planned. Then one of the Magnemite had a spark of genius. It charged a metallic orb of energy and fired that instead. It hit its mark, sending Marowak sliding back a few feet. She was still standing, but both her and her trainer shared the same, brief look of panic.

Somehow, Annie had forgotten to account for the fact that electric-type Pokemon might have moves that weren’t electric.

Kaida’s words were given a new sense of urgency as the wild beasts started talking to each other. The strategy was spreading, and they had seconds before they would be under fire. Never one to let trouble show on her face for long, the girl forced her brave face on. She had a partner, she told herself, and she had her Pokemon. They were going to be fine.

When she spoke again, her ever-overjoyed tone had been switched for an air of authority. It was the kind of change that told her Marowak that playtime was over. “Geist, you’re on the offensive. Put that lightning to work and Bone Rush them!” A dozen bolts of lightning empowered the bone clones she created. Between that and the type advantage, it was fortunate that her strikes only knocked out some of the dwellers she lobbed them at.

The attacks didn’t earn them any favours with the crowd, but given that they were seconds from an all-out brawl, Annie figured she might as well bring out the big guns. She didn’t give much of a second thought to summoning Frankie, though she might have if her guest partners reacted strongly. Between a chimeric design, piercing eyes adorned by a partially cracked helmet and the fact that it towered over its trainer, there was a lot to take in.

Not that Annie was leaving them much time to stare. “Frankie, can you help? Gentle attacks, just to scare them out of the area.” It didn’t respond. Not verbally, anyway. Instead it sped off, committed to its new task. The first Elektrike that stood in its way found himself on the bad end of an Iron Head and sent flying six feet back. The Vikavolt that tried to face the beast was swiped out of the air by a rough Dragon Claw. Frankie didn’t quite seem to understand what ‘gentle’ meant, but it had managed to stop short of maiming his targets. Thus far. Its strength and his body made for an intimidating presence, to say nothing of the squad of Pokemon backing it up. The tides had turned back to their side.

Annie was slow to release her Pokemon, but when she did it was with a relieved smile on her face. Annie Camp Tenet Number Four was ‘If you’re troubled, talk to someone’, but the only person in the camp capable of articulating her problems always seemed hesitant to do so. Pretending everything was fine felt easier, as long as it made the world think that she was fine, happy, confident. Sometimes it didn’t, or more often, bottling up her emotions did little good for her in the long run.

She really needed to find friends that could talk back.

For the moment, she gave a nervous laugh and a quiet apology. The Luxray’s purr told her that all was well, but the idea of any of her partners, her first one aside, seeing her weak… It didn’t sit well with her at all. Apparently it didn’t sit well with the Budew watching them both either, staring with oddly concerned eyes. The trainer stood up and beckoned for her partner to follow as she tried to decide whether she should explain herself.

Make every introduction unforgettable. She’d deemed the rule so important that it stood as Camp Annie Tenet Number One. And yet, as she and Orion approached the front door, her face cast doubt on the commitment.

Given her streak of meetings with powerful men ending badly (she’d yet to learn of Orion’s promotion), she couldn’t shake the feeling that their meeting – her first job interview - was doomed from the start. Her eyes darting back and forth across the flooring betrayed her little hamster wheel thinking through the worst-case scenarios.

Really, what business did a petty thief have with the top dog of Hoenn’s protectors? What were the odds that he’d heard of her, and for the wrong reasons? Was it a sting operation? When he started asking the wrong questions, was she supposed to lie? Would he think less of her for lying, or for what she’d done to surviv-

Even if Orion hadn’t looked in time, the sound of her slapping herself would have drawn his eyes. Heck, it’d probably made a few Taillow turn their heads. Her head had turned too, from the force of her own attack. A slow exhale let out some of the pain, but the rest of it was plain as day on her face… Until it wasn’t. A well-practiced grin took charge; if he hadn’t seen her seconds before, perhaps he might have even thought it was natural.

“I’m fine!” Another lie, as revealed by the red handprint on her cheek. “We’ve just gotta go in there and get it done! Once he sees me and my natural talent, it’ll be a cinch!” If she kept telling herself that, it might even end up being true.

They were off to a bad start, and from there it took mere seconds for violence to break out. Fortunately, a fight breaking out was enough to snap Tox out of a sullen state, and it happened to be a situation she was much more experienced in. Once Torpedo had performed his drive-by, she followed up with a Pin Missile, unleashing a flurry of toxic spikes on the next wave of Mareanie. Two of their foes were knocked out from the attack, and one more decided that it was better to dine and dash than deal with the fight. That left three stubborn Mareanie for the two to handle. One of them used Wide Guard and went straight back to munching on a pleading Corsola, hoping that the barrier would be enough to dissuade the fighters.

Above ground, and oblivious to the battle beneath, Annie raised a brow at his answer. “Why would you try sleepin- You know what? Never mind. I meant more in general.” The conversation turned to her lifestyle, and she turned away. The cost of her accomplishments had been fame, and where she’d hoped that would mean sponsorships and free food, so far it’d only amounted to people knowing about her sorry state. “Don’t call it that,” she grumbled. When she continued, her voice was mostly fine, but it betrayed a hint of caution.

“It’s not by choice. Not everybody has a home waiting for them at the end of the day. Sometimes you have to make your own. I learned a long time ago to make the most of what I’ve got, and I don’t got much. If that’s just a tree one day, then I’ll make a treehouse. If it’s a cave, then I have to hope something else isn’t sleeping there already. When life gives you venom, you make venomade.” The girl gave a shrug, all too ready to dismiss his thoughts on her life. She’d heard a lot of them, and they’d taught her to have her guard ready.

“You only answered one of my questions.” That was probably deliberate, but Annie wasn’t the best at taking hints. Besides, it turned the conversation away from her troubles, and the pity that tended to follow her mentioning it.

If Annie had known that her partner had a specific preference for Pokemon, she could have brought along Sir Pent and Krystal. Then again, Serperior and Dragonair might not be the best choices against a swarm of electric Pokemon. She’d had to keep it in mind for the future, anyway. “Nice to meet you all, but I don’t think that’s right! You don’t have a camp… Not with that attitude. Your home or camp is wherever you make it.” She knew that better than most, considering that hers moved as she did, with the wind and her whims.

She might have commented on how the woman didn’t look half as happy as her partners, but the summoned Onix was a slight distraction. Annie was left with her mouth hanging agape as her and her Marowak stared up at the behemoth. “…Right. Well, good thing he’s on our side!” Even docile, an Onix managed to be an intimidating presence. It wouldn’t last, though. If there was one thing Annie was good at, it was a quick recovery from anything that wasn’t a smile on her face. She turned to face the cave entrance and marched in behind the ranger.

Eyes were upon them the moment they entered New Mauville. The plant attracted a certain kind of clientele, and it was painfully obvious that none of their party fit the bill. That was enough of a reason for those closest to the cave mouth to cast their glare upon the group, and if not… Annie would help.

“Alright zapper bugs, time to pack your bags! New Mauville is closed! Actually, it’s been closed for a while. You guys have just been trespassing!” Times like those, Annie’s loud mouth came in handy. More eyes popped out from behind corners and machinery; zaps of electricity became less frequent as the feeders watched the disturbance.

“You butts can move out in an orderly fashion, or you can get moved as we kick you out! Which one is it going to be?” Two seconds of silence told that it was going to be the latter, judging by the bolts of lightning that started flying towards them. Geist dived several feet to the group’s left, raising her club to act as their Lightning Rod. A flurry of electric attacks redirected in mid-air to fry the Marowak… Or would have, had her ability not caused the bolts to supercharge her instead. Geist looked to Annie, awaiting orders as her body cackled with sparks. In return, she looked to Kaida and her Pokemon, waiting to see if her Pokemon would join the fray.

It was fortunate that most of the safari’s offerings were docile and friendly creatures that day. When a Meowstic eventually passed them by, he took one long look at the pair, oblivious to his presence, and decided to keep on moving. Even a Pokemon could understand that they were having a bit of a moment, and that nothing good could come out of interrupting it.

Of all the ideas Orion had suggested, this had to have been the worst.

Steal, lie and murder your way into earning the favour of a mysterious benefactor. Take his plans after his arrest and use them to make that which should have never existed. Find a group of other trainers that had chosen to defy both the law and nature itself. Put all of them in a small room to discuss their crimes and the twisted fruits of their labour. For bonus points, have each of them release their wired abominations into that small room to compare and contrast, all while stopping them from turning each other into ribbons.

'This is really dumb,' she'd replied to his email. 'I'll see you there.' Followed by two dozen emoticons of varying intensity.

There was a lot to be said abour the kind of friends Orion made, if he knew enough people to call a meeting of thieves and murderers. Then again, he knew her, who happened to be both. She had her reasons, of course, but they'd likely say the same. She couldn't help but wonder what people better off than her could say to defend what they'd done, her ranger friend included.

That was part of the reason why she'd accepted his offer in the first place. On top of that, she'd already sought out help understanding Frankie, but progress on that had been much too slow for a girl that rarely stopped. Most of all, she owed Orion that much. He'd helped her too many times for her to turn down the invitation, even if his was a plan even she had second thoughts about.

For reference, Annie had caught one of her strongest Pokemon by walking up to a horde of Tyranitar, lobbing a Pokeball into the crowd, sending her partner to run in and retrieve it, and then had both of them run for their life for two miles from their fury.

She arrived first, face half-wrappped in an oversized lime scarf. He'd likely recognise the tracksuit she wore, thanks to her very limited wardrobe, and her hiker's backpack remained as full as ever. The walking shoes on her feet, courtesy of Thomas Benoit, stood out solely because of how little wear and tear they showed compared to everything else on her.

Annie greeted the man with her eyes before two fingers pulled the scarf off her mouth. "I'm not sure that I want this prize." The remnants of a smile could be heard in her voice, but given their circumstances, it wasn't too surprising that she seemed... off. A far cry from the girl that loved to make an entrance.

The sight of his apartment behind him reminded her of better days and helped ease her mind. Then she saw his Type: Null, and the realisation gave her pause for the third time that day. A man lauded in her mind, one of the best that she knew... Might not have been much better than herself. She didn't like that thought, and she especially didn't like that proof of it was staring her in the face.

Still, that wasn't its fault. None of the Nulls had asked to be dragged into the world, and yet, there it was. "You don't mind if I...?" She made her way into the apartment, slow steps taking her to Orion's beast. If it was anything like hers, slow and steady movements could prevent a surprise attack. Could being the key word.

If she managed to make it within arm's length without the beast looking especially hostile, she'd offer it her hand. It had long enough to sniff or stare at or accept that her arm was there before she tried giving it a few pats atop its helmet. From that, perhaps, she could gauge how different their chimeras were.

Bolt turned on his trainer, springing on the girl so his weight pushed both of them to the ground. Annie was surprised, but only briefly afraid. She’d been friends with her Luxray for much too long for him to turn his fangs on her. Sure enough, the Icy Wind that flew where her body had once been explained the attack, and his silence moments before.

Another pounce sent him springing away, biting the troublesome Snom to lift it off the ground. With a mighty swing of his head, the attacker was sent flying into the fields. Hopefully, that would be the last that they saw of it.

Annie pushed herself into a sitting position just in time to watch Bolt’s counterattack, and to see her Pokemon slowly stop before her. He stared. Narrowed his eyes. Now that the girl was at his level, he could use a paw to slap her. Not enough to hurt (much), but perhaps enough to bring her to her senses. Before she could scold him for striking her, he nuzzled the spot that he had just harmed. To most, he was sending mixed signals, but with his gentle purrs Annie could piece together a message. ‘You’re being silly. I still love you. Everything is fine.’

Annie decided that their catching spree could wait. The uncertainty faded from her face. It’d never suited her anyway. A relaxed smile was a much better fit for her. She leaned against Bolt, returning his affection with a tight hug. They’d stay like that for a few minutes, letting the rest of the world pass them by.
