“I don’t even think I have any potions. I have a Fortuna, which is just as good! …She’s my Blissey, by the way, and a very good girl.” When the giant ball was on the field, nobody had a say in the matter. If they were injured, they wouldn’t be for long. “So things work out either way.”

The idea of team rankings prompted her to tilt her head. For all her talk of her Camp and its rules- “I don’t think that we have an order, really. I’m on top, obviously, but besides that everybody’s on the same level. I’d guess that my Zoroark gets more respect from the others just because he’s been around the longest, but besides that…” She shrugged. “We’re a team. Besides, I think there’s too many Campers for me to try and figure out an order now.” The girl paused. Blinked. Thinking of her dozens of creatures gave her an idea.

“I’ll tell you what, though. We’ll meet again, soon. Probably. I’ve got a team plan that I’m working on, and you can be my test dummy. If all goes to plan, it’ll be a tough batch, so you better be ready!” There was a smug edge to her smile – a challenge, almost. “Until then… Yeah, I wouldn’t mind hanging here for the night, since you offered! I had to fight a giant green Pokemon in the dark a few nights back. Wasn’t fun, so I’ll stick with company for now. Safety in numbers and all that. So… thanks!”

She let out a sigh, but unlike her smile, it was more relieved than it was burdened. “We don’t give ourselves enough credit. For making it here, I mean." She turned to her partner, almost confident that he didn’t understand the specifics. The overall meaning, at least, he seemed to get, if the smile he returned meant anything. “A lot could’ve gone wrong. I mean, a lot did go wrong, but we’re still here. Surviving. Winning, in our own way.” Kit nodded along with her words, giving the best words of agreement a Zoroark could.

He stopped mid-speech, his arm shooting out to stop Annie in her tracks. The grass in front of them was rumbling, and she’d been too distracted to notice. The ears, followed by the face, of a golden Tepig appeared from the brush. It didn’t look happy to have been disturbed. Annie looked happy to have found something to disturb. “Kit, sic ‘em.” It was all her partner needed to hear. A light attack against the little critter would serve to weaken it without outright killing it, and so Kit settled for a heavily restrained Focus Blast. His target toppled over, leaving him ripe for Annie’s picking.

The glimpses she’d received into other lives made her yearn for something greater. It was why, as terrible and nightmarish as their escape had been, she didn’t find herself minding much that the orphanage had been burned to the ground, and that they could probably never return to their hometown. A life of comfort and complacency had been torn away from them, and she’d been forced on the path of an adventurer to survive Rocket’s decimation. It had been hard. Painful. Stressful. Terrifying at times, and anxiety-inducing at others. Her and her partner had learned survival and fighting skills the long and hard way.

She wouldn’t wish it upon anybody, and she wasn’t exactly in a rush to go back to that life. As troublesome as being homeless in Hoenn was, it was still a massive improvement over a region hijacked by terrorists.

The girl chuckled as the Poochyena ran past. If she told anybody that escaping Kanto had taught her to look on the bright side, they might have thought that she’d left her sanity back there too.

“Hey. It’s alright, I’m fine.” She patted the Pokemon on the back shortly before freeing herself. “I’m not sad or anything, just… thinking. But thanks.” She didn’t bother to force a better smile on, because she knew that she didn’t have to with him. “Going down memory lane and all that. Thinking about… Kanto.” She’d hesitated, allowing herself to be lost in her thoughts again. Calling it ‘the orphanage’ sounded oddly clinical to her, and yet, she couldn’t bring herself to call it home. It was her home, or at least the closest to one she’d ever known, and yet it felt off. The revolving-door cast that made up her peers and caretakers. The residents, rejects that were mostly friends because they were the closest each other had. The lack of funding that led to a life that was just okay. Spending her days wandering, hoping that she might be whisked away.

It wasn’t terrible – even Annie could acknowledge that. She’d heard horror stories about children raised in care. And yet, even from a young age, she’d plant herself in front of a TV and watch stories of better families, more adventurous lives, fame and fortune… If not for those, she might have been content with ‘good enough’.

Kit knew her smile well. He’d seen it many times before, a wistful, bittersweet look. It cropped up occasionally when she was left to her own thoughts. That was to say, he saw it less and less as their Camp grew in size, and she had more partners to keep her company. There were no humans Annie Mei trusted with that look, and very few Pokemon, but as the girl’s first, he’d earned the privilege that was seeing her vulnerable.

The wild Pokemon could wait. Just for a moment longer. There were a few things that the Zoroark missed about being small, but having paws wasn’t one of them. With arms, he could use a gesture she’d taught him so many years ago. Arms gently wrapped around the child’s body, reminding her that she wasn’t, and hadn’t been, quite as alone as she’d told herself. Soon enough, she returned it too.

“I was just thinking. About how we met and all that, back at the orphanage. They said that somebody found you, abandoned outside of town. That technically, they weren’t an orphanage for Pokemon, but they made an exception for you. Probably because they realised that we weren’t letting you go anyway.” She paused mid-step, turning to face her Pokemon properly. “I’m glad that we kept you. …In case I don’t say that often enough.” The sentiment got through to her partner. It was a moment too sweet for the sheep to disrupt.

From one red-eyed little fighter to another. Unfortunately for Annie and her partner, they barely saw the Riolu. It had been watching their last encounter, and wanted nothing to do with any Pokeballs. It dashed out of sight before Annie could even react, leaving her to shrug her shoulders and move on. And so she walked, keeping a close eye on Kit as she went. “Crazy to think that you used to be half my size.” Her first Pokemon had a good few inches on her. He had next to no idea what she was saying, but he smiled anyway.

Questions. So many flustered and frustrated questions. Was that what she sounded like to other people? She’d have to keep that in mind for the next time anger took hold of her. Then again, the way anger worked, she doubted she’d remember. Oh well. Normally, the man’s attitude would have gotten her riled up, but something about it fell short of irritating her. Perhaps it was the side helping of confusion his words carried, as if he had no idea what was going on. It could have been his overreaction to what she considered a minor inconvenience. Maybe it was his hair.

It might have been his hair.

Whatever it was, against her best efforts, she couldn’t keep the smile off her face. She didn’t answer, mostly because her lips were pursed, but even then, they’d curved into the biggest grin. Seeing the poor boy betrayed by his own Pokemon was the final straw. The threat of being soaked didn’t stop her from falling onto the floor laughing, nor did her Lapras’ concerned calls. She didn’t get up until he’d finished catching his newest Pokemon – not because she was done laughing, but because the damp floor had chilled her body, and was threatening to do the same to her soul next.

“Okay. Okay, I’m done.” She wasn’t done, if her choked words were any indication. “Aw, man… I’m sorry. I know you must be new to this and I shouldn’t laugh, but…” A hand went to cover her mouth again. Then it had to cover a sneeze. “Shoot, now I’m gonna get sick too!” The realization wasn’t enough to keep the smile off her face.

“Anyway. Lots of questions. I’ll try my best to answer. But first!” Another Pokeball was retrieved, and with it, a Vulpix was sent out. “Sune, we’re running Operation Annie’s Cold.” She could have made up the name, but the little fox’s nod told that this was fairly normal for the trainer.

“Yeah, Annie Mei! What’s wrong with my name? And yeah, I’ve got water types. Why shouldn’t I catch more? Every good trainer’s got a variety of Pokemon for every situation. One time I had to help fight a fire, and I only had Melody!” She stroked the Lapras’ neck as she climbed aboard her spiked shell. “Not that there’s anything wrong with her, but in times like those, it’d be great to have backup. Besides, I’ve got a plan, and for that plan I need more water and ice Pokemon!”

The Vulpix stood at the water’s edge, large eyes peering up at Annie. “Oh no, not for me. Operation Annie’s Cold on that guy!” She pointed to Jet, and Sune pranced over to him, very careful to avoid the puddles. She sat at his feet, waiting. “You can carry her while we’re moving if you want. Vulpix are like little heaters – really handy for this time of year! Just be nice to her, or she’ll curse you. Anyway!”

“Yeah, you did catch a Lapras. You also beat up that Lapras, after it tried to beat you up. I figured that things might be a bit rocky between you guys, and it might not be too eager to help right away.”

Melody, like most Lapras, was clever enough to understand Annie’s words beyond the vague commands she gave, and so she took the girl’s words as a prompt to try and ease tensions. It’s fine, Melody said to her kin, as best a Lapras could. Trainers could be nice. It took some getting used to, but soon they’d be as close as her and Annie. “One of us probably knows the way out, but you’re really going to want to get on that Meavuh soon… Unless you just like being wet.”

She’d had a big breakfast. Given herself a pep talk. Given her Pokemon an even longer pep talk (she wasn’t sure where her Weavile had learned to roll his eyes, but she was sure that she saw him doing it four minutes in). And yet, her nerves refused to settle. Nobody would blame her. She was but a child, putting herself forward, to fluster and fail through a gym in front of an audience. If she came up short, every mistake would be immortalized on camera-

No. She clapped her hands against her cheeks for the fifth time that day. If she let those thoughts take root in her mind, then the challenge was already lost. “You wouldn’t have signed up if you didn’t think you had a chance. A good chance.” She was whispering to herself, but the stubborn determination rang through anyway. “It’s simple. Get in there, head held high. Kick some butt. Get a badge.“ She paused, narrowing her eyes at her own thoughts. Insecurities tried to seep their way in, but she forced them out again.

“The world’s watching. About time I showed it what I’ve got.” The girl took a deep breath in. She lifted her head and stared furiously at the doors before her. Hoenn didn’t need to know that Annie Mei faltered at times, or doubted her decisions. It needed to know that she existed, and she was going to rock their world.

When both hands forced the double doors open, there was not a trace of hesitation to be found on her face. Instead, there was a determined grin so intense that only a child could muster it up. Her gaze fixed itself on the announcer. She didn’t have the luxury of speakers and microphones to carry her voice, but that wouldn’t stop her for replying in kind, with a pointed finger at the man for good measure.

“Of course it’s familiar! If you haven’t heard of this up-and-coming trainer extraordinaire yet, you’re not keeping up with the times! This is Annie Mei’s grand debut, and you’re lucky to get front row seats to it!” Funny, how the mind worked. With every word of her bold claims, she convinced herself a little more that they might be true. Speaking the truth built up her confidence, and so the conviction made her words sound stronger, in a self-perpetuating snowball of arrogance.

Adults had always told that the secret to success was to fake it until she made it, and Annie had decided that that was only half true. Faking it until she became it was working out much better for her.

Chirping stopped her short of being too nostalgic. Another bird Pokemon had appeared. More specifically, it had planted herself in her path. It wouldn’t have been difficult for either of them to walk around each other. And yet, when she looked down, the Rookidee leapt up, angrily twittering as it bounced up and down. It wasn’t fighting her, but challenging her.

It was hard for her to keep a straight face, being threatened by a creature that could fit in her palm. Then she remembered that 1) the creature absolutely could beat her in a fight if it wanted to, and 2) she’d tried to fight other trainers before, only to be brushed off based on her age and size. It was demeaning at best, and she knew better from that experience than to deny the little bird.

She sent out Kit – a fitting choice considering where her mind had taken her that day. The Zoroark looked back and forth between her and the Rookidee, an increasingly confused pair of eyes asking Annie what he was supposed to do. “I think he wants a fight. Or just to be tired. You remember that one time we had to keep that little kid busy? When we put on a show?” Kit put on a devilish smirk. The last word seemed to be enough to give him an idea.

What followed was twelve minutes of an illusionist at work. Kit barely needed to raise a finger, letting the bird tire itself out chasing mirages of giant Pokemon, little Annies, other Rookidee, whatever the Zoroark fancied. The wild Pokemon had been given a workout, and much like a toddler, it was left exhausted, but with as big a grin as a golden bird could muster. By then, Annie didn’t need to ask to catch it – their new partnership was unspoken, for the pair had impressed each other. She couldn’t turn down a Pokemon with that much spunk, and it wanted more of whatever those tricks were.

With the Pokemon claimed, she was left to her own thoughts again. Where was she?
Right, being alone. Almost. If it wasn’t for Kit, she didn’t know where she’d be. It wasn’t just that having even a weak Pokemon increased her odds in the wilds tenfold. It wasn’t even that the Zorua’s unique control over illusions kept them out of the gaze of those that would wish them harm (though the skill was nothing short of a lifesaver). It was mere companionship. Having a partner by her side in the pouring rain, in a war-town town, in deep water with some thugs… He made everything a little less hopeless. Even more so with their shared background.

She allowed her thoughts to take her away again. Some small part of her brain registered the Poochyena, but it wouldn’t bother to acknowledge it.

The Zoroark called to her trainer with good news in both hands. One had wedged a fossil between a trio of claws – from the same source as the bones, no doubt. The other pointed to where it had been clawing away. More specifically, at a hole in the snow that hadn’t closed up. A large one. They were free. “Kit, we did it! We saved Christmas! And all the other holdiays too, I guess!” Both of the trainer’s fists shot into the air, and shortly after her Pokemon followed suit. The Vulpix abandoned her fire-melting efforts to join the victory shot.

The three of them cheering in the middle of the hall might have looked a bit odd, but no amount of staring was going to stop them before they were ready. Their confidence suggested that they did that a lot.
