A little hump of a Pokemon, apparently. Numel, the Pokedex said once she scanned it. The thing seemed a little dopey. Lazy. Too slow. Not Camp Annie material, in other words. The criteria for that was arbitrary and changed depending on the day or weather, but nobody had managed to call her out on that yet! “Okay. This time, a lot slower.” She patted her Arcanine on the back, gesturing for him to give her a gentler ride that time around.

It had been a genius plan in her head. To attract good fire Pokemon, she’d need to show off one of her own. She also needed a Pokemon that took kindly to being ridden – or at least, kindlier than her Type: Null. She could knock out two birds with one stone by riding Hunter up and down the route, and see dozens of creatures as they went!

In practice, it meant clinging for dear life on the back of an Arcanine as he rode like the wind through grass, over ponds and dangerously close to trees. “Hun- Hunter!” The beast may have been best known for its graceful gliding, but the inexperience rider on his back bumped and swayed so much that she could hardly get her words out. “S-Slow down! Or just stop!” The latter command got through to her beast, and it slowed to a gentle stop in the middle of the path. He looked no worse for wear. She looked likes he’d been thrown into a tumble drier.

Now that they were moving slowly enough for her to make out Pokemon, who would she see?

Few people were brave (or stupid) enough to squeeze a Pokemon they weren’t familiar with. The little heater could become a furnace at a moment’s notice – in fact, the man’s rough handling prompted both squirms and a rise in temperature that served as a warning to him. “Hey, hey, you’ve gotta calm down with that!” Sune’s cries likely mirrored her trainer’s words, if the panicked tone was anything to go by. “She’s a Pokemon, not a toy!” Luckily for him, Vulpix was one of the more docile creatures she could have sent out, but if he kept pushing his luck…

Even when as the feeling of ice started to settle in her body, she was able to hold a disapproving look for Jet. She gestured for Melody to take them down a rapidly-growing canal while she turned to the man. “How long have you been a trainer for?” The girl paused and put a finger to her lip. “Actually, you don’t have to answer that. More importantly, are you this rough with your Pokemon all the time? Physically and verbally? Because they’ve got feelings. Even if they don’t know exactly what you’re saying, they get the message pretty well. Heck, I’m pretty sure Lapras do understand what we’re saying!” Melody nodded on cue. ”Because you’re just such a smart girl, right?” The sea beast hummed a mildly amused sound. They sailed past a Smoochum as they turned a corner, but none of the party seemed to notice nor care. “Anyway, it pays off to be nice to them. If you’re going to stick with a guy for life, you’d want to at least be friendly with them, right?”

A RACE TO RESOLUTION (RAID)

If Annie had paid more attention to the news, she would’ve known to run as soon as the wormhole appeared. Instead, she found herself fixed in place, enamoured by the sight of a gangly beast performing some sort of party trick. Her mouth was slightly agape, partly out of surprise, partly out of wonder for the beast that seemed to defy the basic rules of a Pokemon, and partly because she’d been reaching to eat some cotton candy when it arrived.

Gemini snapped her out of her daze, its gem flashing colours that Annie had come to understand as ‘danger’. Rapidly. Voices she vaguely recognized ordered their Pokemon to summon a defence. Annie felt a pit in her stomach, but she’d saved herself enough times before to not let that stop her.

Still, it’s by pure circumstance that she isn’t caught in the blast. Earth Power and Wide Guard appeared before her and blocked her view, but she didn’t need to see much to understand what came after. Beyond the barriers, the world was claimed by flames. Her ears rang. Shock ran through her, and then adrenaline, forcing her to do something, anything. She opted to call out a mysterious beast of her own. How exactly Frankie could help, she didn’t know, but its strength would surely be needed soon. The Type:Null stood beside and in front of her, a silent vanguard and a stark contrast to her wide-eyed, startled self.

“What do we do now?!” She called towards the older, and presumably more experienced trainers that had saved her life. She didn’t seem to be in a hurry to acknowledge that, but hopefully the two would understand her panic. “And what the hell is- was that thing?!”

She nodded several times in a row. “I’ve had Fortuna since she was a little egg. Not an actual egg, but pretty egg-shaped. Once we’re done with this, I can introduce you.” The Pokedex demonstration was too important for her to distract from, and so she watched as Florian explained its mechanics and etiquette. “Oh, so I shouldn’t go around scanning everybody. Good to know, because I totally would’ve done that.” Once he was done, she gestured with a finger for him to hold on for a second.

Blitz’ Pokeball was retrieved, and she said her farewells. “I’ll be seeing you at dinner, alright?” The Weavile was returned, and in its place a Chansey was sent out. She seemed happy to be allowed to stretch. Then again, the predecessor to the Happiness Pokemon didn’t need much reason to smile. It didn’t take long for her to wonder off in search of friends, while Annie fiddled with the Pokedex.

“Me and Kit, my first Pokemon… We were having a bit of a rough patch-“ Or year- “and had to crash under a tree for a night. We were worried that we’d run into trouble there, so imagine our surprise when we woke up and there was a little pinky sleeping against me!” It wasn’t hard to imagine that the Chansey was perhaps too trusting of strangers; she was already persuading an Ivysaur to come out of the trees and join them. “I screamed. She screamed too, but neither of us ran… And I guess that’s how we became friends!”

Since the professor had suggested it, she attempted to scan the Comfey sitting atop his head. The device shared its insights:
It stretches sticky vines out from its head and picks flowers to adorn itself with. When it doesn't have any flowers, it feels uneasy.

“Oh! So the flowers aren’t part of the Pokemon! That’s really cool! I get it, little guy. I like to dress myself up nicely too.” Few would guess that from looking at the girl; a drifter’s life didn’t lend itself well to fancy outfits. Her red and black tracksuit was chosen partly out of pragmatism, and mostly because thrift stores didn’t have many child outfits on offer.

Fortuna returned to her side, but she wasn’t alone. A stubby green thing with a plant on its back pranced its way over to the gathering. Chansey pointed to her trainer, giving what sounded like encouraging words to her new friend. The grass-type looked up at Annie expectantly, and the girl smiled back. “Like I said, she’s a natural with this. Are you coming along with us, Lil Bulb?” The Pokemon staying put was taking as its answer, and so another Pokeball was used.

Annie nodded along, pretending that she knew what an Aqua Ring was. Her free hand continued stroking Fortuna atop her head. Well, body. They were one and the same when it came to a Chansey. Unlike the Vaporeon, the child’s trainer seemed to be in a state of bliss with the affection she was given, eyes closed and mouth slightly agape. The predecessor to the Happiness Pokémon was easy to please.

“Going to have to give you another ‘to each their own’ there. I’ve slept on enough floors to not be in a rush to do it again.” And yet, she didn’t have a room booked for the night. Or the night after, or any time soon. She’d surprised herself, even, with how open she’d been; few people got to hear that Annie’s life was less than ideal, even if it obviously was. It made his next words come as even more of a surprise. Her gaze switched from the little nurse to him, growing confused, and then suspicious. “…Who’s the Stray?” was the first question of many. “And what’s their business? More importantly… Why?” She had to be cautious. The streets had taught her that it always paid to be, especially when strangers were making offers a little too good to be true. “People don’t just pick up strangers for jobs. Or kids.” The bitter edge to her voice told that she’d learned that from experience, but it didn’t seem to be directed at him, just at life.

More Pokémon appeared, but Annie was too distracted by the suggestion to realise that Bolt didn’t care. The little lion had finally tired himself out, and had opted to lie at Fortuna’s feet.

It didn’t move. Perhaps the Wing Attack had been a lucky shot after all, and not a sign of her questionable knowledge. Worse still, Clamp’s close proximity, combined with the remnants of the Sweet Scent, meant that he didn’t stand a chance of defending himself. Annie called for her partner to “Dodge!”, but her words never reached him. A mighty blade forced him onto one knee, an eye half-shut from pain he was failing to hide. If his kind hadn’t been especially resistant to grass attacks, that might have been the end for him.

His trainer knew better than anybody else that he loved to put on a brave face, so a Scizor downed was enough for her to show concern she’d have rather kept to herself. If the gym leader looked past the fight, she’d see a child biting her lip, racking her brain for her next move.

When in doubt, she’d fall on what was familiar. “Hey, Clamp! Camp Annie Tenet Number Two: Try Not To Give Up! This fight’s not over until you’re on the floor, and you’ve got a show to put on until then! You're not just going to let that thing get away with laughing at you, are you?!” Clamp grunted, partly from annoyance for the Lurantis and its mockery, and partly from the force he was exerting to keep himself standing. With Annie’s words strengthening his resolve, he raised himself one inch towards standing height. Then another. That was enough for Annie.

“One more Wing Attack!” Wings extended, not to help him stand, but to slice against the false bug’s legs as Clamp suddenly span around. Even if the attack didn’t land, the extra room would hopefully buy him time to get back onto his feet.

As soon as the Tyranitar formed on the field, Annie knew to shield her eyes. Her other hand clicked a Pokeball open to return Bolt, saving him the trouble of enduring the ensuing Sandstorm. It didn’t reach that far out, but the girl chose to be safe rather than sorry. Once she was sure her eyes weren’t about to be under assault, she lowered her arm and watched the battle. “Hey, you’ve got a Goliath too! Mine’s a little bit cooler, though.” The smug edge to her voice suggested that she could have said that about any of their mutual Pokémon.

The titan’s arrival only increased the intrigue of wild Pokemon. Sure enough, more appeared to watch, or to try their luck, and Annie noticed. She only had two Pokemon left to show off, but she wasn’t confident that either of them would fare well in a sandstorm if the Tyranitar got a bit too excited. Therefore-

“It’s round two for you, Clamp! Sock ‘em with a Bullet Punch.” One hand retrieved the Scizor’s Pokemon, sending him out while she spoke. The other pointed to his target – a Wartortle, jumping down from a nearby rock. Her Pokemon looked a little annoyed to be commanded right away, but that wouldn’t slow him down. The combination of a move created with blinding speed in mind, and the bug’s talent as a Technician, meant that the turtle was down before it could even raise its arms in defence. Annie’s Pokeball followed shortly after.

“Hey, have you figured out a way to make your guy not spread sand everywhere? I haven’t, but I’m not sure if its because its not possible or if its because mine is really stubborn.” Clamp carefully retrieved the ball, returning it to Annie as she spoke.

OOC: Catch!

So of course, the next Pokemon that appeared had to catch her eye. Annie poorly supressed a giggle as the Riolu ran into view, running in a manner akin to a certain animated ninja wizard. It stopped before her, and did… nothing at all. Annie hadn’t realised that she didn’t have to choose the Pokemon; it had read the aura of her and Kit, and it had chosen them. As such, the Pokemon dropping to one knee was a bizarre twist to them… But who was Annie to deny a beast the opportunity to join her? A Pokeball was thrown in short order, and her time in the Safari Zone came to an end.

With yet another little golden Pokemon added to her pack, Annie continued to stroll through the safari. With her inner thoughts put to rest, and her closest companion by her side, she felt free to focus on the task at hand. Another Pokemon sprinted past them. Small, green, shady-looking. Kit looked to her for commands, but the trainer gestured for him to let the grass-type go. She wasn’t in a rush to use the last ball.
