Annie didn’t respond – not right away. To learn why, Ruby only had to follow her gaze. The trainer had her eyes on the evening sun, and more importantly, the bird Pokemon flying around it, slowly flying closer to their level. She recognised the hat-heads as Murkrow, and from there it wasn’t hard to piece together the problem. If Annie had had enough encounters with the little devils to know that they had a fondness for anything that sparkled and shined, they must have known that the Delibird carried a few treasures around. Treasures ripe for the taking.

“They’re outside of their turf.” The girl’s voice was quieter than usual. Less energetic, more thoughtful. In the absence of a Pokedex, Annie had committed a fair bit of information on Hoenn’s species through trial and error. Mostly error. “They must’ve been following this guy for a while, waiting for an opening. Or maybe the rest of the pack.” Another ‘fun fact’ she’d learned from experience – the Darkness Pokemon rarely travelled, let alone struck, without strength in numbers… Even if the Delibird seemed to be easy pickings.

She looked down to her fellow trainer, eyes suddenly as vibrant and cheerful as ever. A hand hovered down to her pocket, ready to send out her defence when the assault inevitably began. “Huh? Oh, about half an hour now? Maybe an hour. I don’t really have a watch. Feels like two years though. This guy might not stop for anybody, but he’s slow as hell! …But that’s no good reason to get eaten or beaten.”

It was a risk, and him showing that he understood that helped. Pretending that there was nothing suspicious about his offer would have been the biggest red flag he could offer. Instead, his words managed to ease the doubt in her eyes, and with it, the frustration went too. Soon enough, she’d been talked down to a cautious, but curious child once again. A child that really didn’t want to be in the cave any longer, she realised, as yet another wave of humid air embraced her.

“Let’s get going, then. You said that you were heading back, right?” Or at least implied it. Her Pokemon perked their heads up at the idea of leaving. They’d handled the heat far better than her, but that didn’t mean they were in a rush to stay. “We can go there. Check the place out. I can help, if there’s anything left to help with.” And more importantly, she’d be able to see right away if him and his tavern were truly worth her trust. Thanks and gratitude would come later.

‘Synthesis’ sounded familiar, but she didn’t realise just how troublesome it would be until she saw the injuries fading. All of a sudden, it wasn’t just a matter of taking down a vicious enemy, but dealing damage faster than it could heal itself. If the gym leader looked across the field, she’d see an unmistakable look of dread on the girl’s face. It wouldn’t last. It only took seconds for oft-repeated words to echo through her mind. Her own words. Whether or not her partner needed to hear them, she would give them a voice.

“And! Camp Annie Tenet Number Five!” As silly as the words may have sounded, she held nothing but conviction in her tone. “You’re Likely To Succeed If You Try!” Maybe it was the familiarity, maybe it was the volume. Either way, the words reached the Scizor through his aroma-induced haze, returning a call of “Scizor!” in return.

“Then let’s get to trying harder – and winning! On your feet!” Clamp stood up. “Arms at the ready!” Annie drew her fists in front of her. He didn’t look back to see her, but mimicking the action with glowing blue pincers told that this wasn’t their first time. “Quick Attack!” There wasn’t much of a distance to close, but the recovery move had made it brought on the urge to hasten the fight. Likewise, a hook to the face might have been seen as brutal, but The Lurantis had move than shown that it could take a rough hit.

Her smile wavered. She’d never bumped fists with a Tyranitar. Hers had tried to make his fist meet her face, but that seemed a little less friendly. Also, painful. She really needed to work on getting his act together. “Yours is… nicer than mine, then. But that’ll change! Soon! I know it.” She was trying to convince herself more than him, if her tone was any indication.

Another challenger dragged her away from that train of thought – or rather, its attack. A dozen rocks fired down upon Clamp. A quick move of his arms allowed him to shield his body from the worst of it, if his steel shell wasn’t enough of a defence. Trainer and Pokemon alike settled their gaze upon the next troublemaker – an Omanyte.

The Scizor took one step forward, only to be returned to its ball before it could have its revenge. “As long as that Sandstorm stays under control… Coco, you’re up!” Her next Pokemon was a bit of a sight to see. If the Type: Null towered over her, and the Tyranitar dwarfed her, then the Alolan Exeggutor was a living monolith, its neck casting a shadow over her body. There was nothing to fear, if only they looked up; none of its three upper heads seemed capable of malice without a command. So of course that was what Annie gave, with a point and a call. “Rain hell with a Seed Bomb on the shell thing!”

Coco swung her head back and forth, loosening balls that were halfway between conkers and coconuts. Instead of the explosions the attack name implied, the seeds bludgeoned the Omanyte into submission as they rained upon it. In short order, the battle was over; judging by her faces, Coco was conflicted about it. “Hey! You’ve gotta get used to fighting a little bit. Every Pokemon’s got to know how to defend themselves, right?” She looked to the other trainer for backup, but not before she threw a ball to snag the little fossil. "Even a garden guard has to know how to keep intruders away."

A RACE TO RESOLUTION (RAID)

The smoke cleared. Her head, much less so. Commands and greetings from a knightly friend. Shields and barriers being thrown up all around them. The monstrosity, alive – no worse for wear, even. Dozens of children and Pokemon that were too slow, too unlucky, laying lifeless on the ground. Dead. Gone. Probably. Maybe. It was hard to tell.

A child like her thrived when surrounded by the unexpected, but this was a far cry from the mischief she usually called life. It would have overwhelmed her, shut her down, if adrenaline hadn’t stepped in and purged her mind. The corpses? Weren’t there. The fire? Not a problem. All that mattered were the immediate threats to their lives. The beast and its bombs.

Judging by everybody else’s reactions, she wasn’t alone. Her eyes darted around, following the ball as each trainer tried to escape its imminent wrath. Of particular note was the so called Elite Four member: while most others desperately shot the head somewhere, anywhere away from them, there was no mistaking her Pokemon’s aim as anything other than a targeted strike. A petty, cruel targeted strike at that. It was appalling, especially from the supposed ‘best of them’, and if they didn’t have slightly bigger fish to fry, she would have made those thoughts known. Until a better chance presented itself, all she could do was remember how an Elite acted in trying times.

But alas, they all had other priorities, and so she had to settle for a brief look of dismay. While it came uncomfortably close to her, the ball was deflected, leaving her and her Pokemon to focus on the big bad. Her gaze shifted to the nearby knight. “Yep-yeah, terrible time to meet and all.” She didn’t sound enthused about the small talk at all – but really, could he blame her? “I’m gonna try and pin that frick down so we can blast it to hell. Gemini!” The Starmie’s gem blinked yellow in acknowledgement. “Use Psychic to stop that clown freak!” The star took to the air and glowed blue; if it was successful, so would the beast. The attack was anything but, for it didn’t aim to strike – just to halt it, slow it, do something that could leave it vulnerable to the other attacks.

“And Frankie, get it with a Tri-Attack!” Her silent shield rushed out from behind her, past Balder and Solgaleo. In one mighty leap, it stood atop their earthen shield, giving it a clear shot at its target. Well, as clear as things were going to get with the fire, smoke, and general nightmare continuing around them. A triangle of fire, ice and sparks formed in front of the Type: Null’s helmet, and from its center, a beam fired to strike the clown. They’d be lucky if it hit, but it was likely for naught.

TL;DR: -1 respect for Bailey Cooper. She tells @creepy her plan. Her Starmie uses Psychic to try and keep Blacephalon still. Her Type: Null uses Tri-Attack on Blacephalon.

“Each of my Pokemon are special in their own way, but her and I have been together long enough for her to be a little more special. Just don’t tell the others!” Annie settled a hand atop the egg’s head, who tried (and failed) to reach it with her little stubs. “She’s a great girl, and a Pokemon and support for the other fighters. Just don’t ask her to throw a punch herself.”

The idea of a garden brought the girl pause, and a lessened smile. “You grow flowers? Like, to sell?” It wasn’t a bad idea. Anything that let her legally earn money couldn’t be bad, in her mind. “Sounds like a plan to me. I’ll have to look into that… Soon! Speaking of which…” She glanced up at the sky. It was past noon, from the looks of it, and at that time of year, that meant they only had a few hours of safe travelling left.

“I hate to have to cut things off here, but the two of us should really get a move on. We’ve got to find a Center, buy some instant noodles and find somewhere to camp, all before the sun goes down. If Fortuna’s out, she’ll keep getting distracted trying to make friends-“ The Chansey nodded obliviously. “So we’ll have to hustle. But I’m really glad I met you, and I’ll make it my goal to meet you again some time! You’ll have to see how much I fill out this PokeDex so you know it’s going to good use!”

She gave the professor and his Pokemon a chance to say their final words before she took a step back and waved to them. Fortuna mimicked her actions, mostly because they looked like the friendly thing to do. “We’ll be seeing you, Professor… Er…” A small frown showed itself. It was an awkward time to realise that they hadn’t introduced themselves.

“Professor Fairy!” Close enough. “And I’m Annie Mei, by the way! Have fun finding your next friends!”

A stray. She wasn’t sure that she liked the sound of that, and her further narrowed gaze told as much. A stray was something that moved without aim, or perhaps something unwanted by others. The latter she couldn’t deny – she hadn’t lived in an orphanage for nothing – but she had a meaning. A purpose.
She just hadn’t found it yet.

Still, if he hadn’t seen the problem of his vacancy sign in himself, he’d find it on the girl’s face. An offer of a free room, in exchange for some light work and nothing more? Deals like those were the kind the streets had taught her to steer clear of, for they were rarely as simple as that. At best, there were string attached. At worst, it was the last anybody heard of you, if you had anybody to ask questions in the first place. Even with his explanation, the scepticism held on her face… But slowly, surely, it began to soften. He seemed genuine. Or very good at his sales pitch. Hopefully more of the former than the latter. And really, what other options did she have? A sleepover in the cave was a bust. Fortuna had barely been out two minutes and she was already panting from the heat, and Bolt-

She looked down. Bolt was gone, or rather, slowly returning to them. To the Chansey’s horror, he was dragging a bird larger than himself back to the group. Even Annie seemed conflicted about her little beast’s catch – and not just because of Evan’s speech. The nurse seemed eager to tend to the wild’s injuries, but- “Fortuna, Bolt, stay put for now unless I say so. Please.” There was an edge of sternness rarely heard in the girl’s voice, and it was enough to make the Shinx plant his bottom back beside her. The look of guilt in his eyes was enough to distract her from Evan’s difficult choice; her heart softened, and she quickly regretted showing him anything but love.

“I didn’t mean it like that. Just…” She sighed. Frustration hadn’t been on the agenda for the day, and yet, there she was. Trusting the demon-eyed, piercing-laden stranger to help her battle was one thing, but to take her to his home was…
Annie took a deep breath in. “I’ll… try it. But if I don’t like what I see, I’m out right away.” She almost seemed to be begrudgingly accepting the offer, even if it was the best anybody had given her in… Well, years. “And I’ll be keeping an eye on you the whole time, so you better not try anything funny.” She seemed hesitant to trust him, or just anybody that offered her a hand outside of battles. Perhaps he could sympathise.

She crouched down to the Fletchinder, but instead of retrieving a potion, it was introduced to her Pokeball. It was the only reason she’d allowed it to stay injured for that long.

Annie wasn’t sure whether she minded being kept waiting or not. Half or her wanted to get her stuff and leave; the other wanted to rip the bandage off, get the meeting over with as soon as possible. After fifteen minutes spent arguing with herself, he was ready for her. She walked in, pursed lips slightly loosened by the surprise that was Lucas Lane. He was younger than she’d expected. Some might have even said he was handsome.

“Oh. It’s, er, nice to meet you too.” Between her reason for arriving and her general inexperience with all things formal, it was no surprise that she seemed a bit confused. An arm was outstretched a few seconds too late. Would he take the handshake? Was the introduction handshake worthy? One thing was for sure – it was a far cry from her usual boisterous self. The worry was written on her face, not just for her beast, but for herself.

“You have a medicine Pokemon?” The squint in her eyes that followed told that she’d realised too late that wasn’t the best first question. With it placed so close to where she was to sit, it felt more like security than a doctor’s order. Maybe that was just her nerves talking, reminding her of too many close calls with the kind of crooks that needed the extra muscle. Still, if he was lying, it was too late for her to flee the lion’s den. She had a friend to help, and she’d already come that far.
Plus, they had all of her stuff.

And so she sat down. Her hands fell upon her laps, but she was making a visible effort not to fidget with them. “I’m the one that’s happy,” she said, in a tone that indicated anything but joy. “You didn’t have to meet with me, and I’m sure you have a lot on your plate already. I appreciate you taking the time to hear me out.”

OOC: Catch!

Riding along at a light jogger’s pace not only meant that Annie’s lunch stayed in her stomach – it also allowed daring Pokemon to stand side by side with them. Such was the case with the little fox that came to join them. It had the eyes of a Vulpix, the colour of the Arcanine she’d rode in on, and the beauty both were renowned for. An easy candidate for Camp Annie – but she couldn’t have Hunter fight while she was on top on him. Luckily, she didn’t have to.

A few of her fire types had taught her the way into their hearts was through their stomachs. From her pocket, she retrieved a handful of berries, freshly gathered from her farm. A few pats on the back with her frfee hand told her mount to stop, so she could reach down and offer the food to their soon-to-be friend. Once she got close, and the Flareon had its chance to sniff, she let the berries drop. She knew before it happened that the fox would want its berries roasted, and there was no need for her hand to be charred too. With the Pokemon’s head down to eat, Annie moved in for the kill! Well, for the Pokeball, bouncing it against the little beast’s back.

If not for the fact that there were floating in what was quickly becoming a river of ice water, Sune would had squirmed herself free of the trainer’s grasp. Fortunately for him, she chose the lesser of two terrible fates. “You’re lucky she’s one of my calmer girls. If you’d said something like that to Blitz or Bolt, they’d show you exactly how strong they were.” She felt no need to try and correct him. From most other trainers, it might have riled her up, but after seeing the way he treated his team members… She was almost arrogantly confident that she was the better of the two. So arrogant that she didn’t need to voice the fact. The Vulpix, on the other hand, seemed content to huff and puff as she tried to find a less violating position.

“I can’t stop. She’s part of Camp Annie. That means I have to look out for her, and make sure she’s doing well.” Doing that had paid off, for it was only because of the trainer’s watchful gaze that Sune didn’t burn the man and flee, water be damned.

Annie gestured for a left turn, steering them down a cavern littered with stalactites. “Oh, I remember this part! …You’re gonna wanna duck down.” Both hands made a shape above her head. A horn, perhaps? No, probably his hair. Melody tilted her head a little closer to the water’s surface, but Annie wasn’t quite tall enough to be in danger. She let him say his piece about his life, not expecting the question to be thrown back to her.

“Oh… Honestly, I don’t know. When do you start being a trainer?” She offered her own question a gentle shrug. “I knew my first Pokemon for years before we started travelling, and even then it was a few weeks before I had a Pokeball to catch him. We were just cool enough with each other to stick together until it was official.” It was a half-truth. To say war-torn Kanto had been difficult would be a large understatement, and they quickly realised that their best chances of survival would be with each other. The companionship had just been a nice bonus, at first. “Er… A year? Maybe two? Somewhere between those two. With the whole Rocket invasion, we weren’t exactly keeping track of- Oh! I see a light!”

Sure enough, the afternoon sun was beginning to peek in in the distance. They were homebound – unless any wild Pokemon tried to ruin their trip.
