Then it started rolling away, upside-down eyes glaring at her as it left. “Oh,” she muttered. She looked to Grampa. He looked back at her. She shrugged and continued on.

Perhaps holding back hadn’t been such a good idea. The gym Pokemon hadn’t thought to be so kind, returning fire with a glowing green blade. Clamp took the brunt of the attack with his arm; his wince suggested that he regretted not trying to dodge. A hardened exoskeleton wouldn’t allow him to shrug off such a powerful move, but it ensured that their match wasn’t ending yet.

The bug leapt back, awaiting orders. “Still alright?” He nodded, but wouldn’t turn to face Annie. “Good. We’re switching to evasive manoeuvres! Go ahead!” There was only one move that fit the bill, and Annie didn’t need to say it. He broke into a run, towards the enemy’s side of the field but steering clear of his foe. It wasn’t until he’d run past the Lurantis that he used his move. His body glowed blue, only for the energy to disperse itself as a quartet of clones standing beside him. None of them were real, as was the nature of Double Team, but every second that the enemy took to determine that the real one stood the furthest to the right was another that they could use to turn the tides.

She hadn’t been naïve enough to think she’d be left alone, but couldn’t the beast have given her a few minutes to warm up? Those thoughts would pass through her head once she survived the encounter – if she survived at all. In the moment, adrenaline put her thought processes on fast-forward.

Big beast. Strong beast, probably. Fight? Perhaps. Fighting made noise. Cave made echoes. Echoes drew more. More Pokemon was bad. Run? Outrun? Possible. Unlikely, but possible.

The Haxorus raised an arm, denying her the chance to think through her options any more. And so she chose to flee, going from being frozen in shock to scrambling to her feet. If she was lucky, she’d rush out of the beast’s reach and into the darkness beyond the cave. The cover of night, she hoped, would keep him away… If she managed to make it that far.

The Chespin returned, or so Annie thought. No, wait. She didn’t know much about Pokemon, but she knew that she hadn’t met many that could change colour. Either this one had a talent, or it was a different, fancier Pokemon. Or, judging by the red, it was very angry. Either way, it had become 400% more Annie.

“Hey, little guy! You and I have matching colours! She gestured to her eyes and its ‘hat’. “That means that we’re friends now, so you’re a part of Camp Annie!” Her logic wasn’t the best, but as Florian had taught her, intentions shone through. The Chespin rushed over to her side, returning the grin she flashed at him. A Pokeball was pressed against his head – if all went to plan, he wouldn’t resist.

What the hell was with the old men at the party? Kyle sounded no better than the Phony Santa. Then again, maybe it wasn’t just the guys. A woman arrived, and though she had a lot more Christmas cheer, she’d completely ignored her! And the fact that she was talking to him! A flicker of fury showed itself in the girl’s eyes, but no, no. It was the holidays. No place for such hostility. She took a deep breath in and exhaled her troubles away.

And then another one did the same thing, and it all came rushing back.

“Excuse me! I thought that the grown-ups were supposed to be the one with manners! We’re trying to have a heart-to-heart!” Nostrils flared and crimson eyes narrowed. It might have been troubling, if she wasn’t wearing a Delibird costume that had cost four pokedollars to make (and looked like it, too). “Now listen here, bucko! You’re not old because you’re a big man! You’re old because you’re a big man, hiding in a corner, out at a totally optional party and being a big downer about it! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Start acting like it is!”

Somebody was yelling over her, or trying to. He didn’t earn more than a “Who the heck are you?!” from the bird before she fixed her glare back on Kyle. “Now, I want you to get up and stop being outdone by a little girl. What would your Pokemon have to say about your act, huh?”

TL;DR: Annie gets ignored by Noelle Lane and persephone amavi . She isn't happy about it, and takes that out on kyle lopez . kim cole-essam gets acknowledged, I guess.  Costume notes are here.

OOC: Catch attempt!

A Pokemon that didn’t have eyes had caught Annie’s. That was a rare sight to her, and that meant that the Pokemon was worth giving a chance. Add that to the gem that seemed to be its core, and she’d determined the beast to be Camp Annie material. “That’s the one, Grampa. Knock ‘em dead! Well, not actually dead, but you know what I mean.” The Star recognised their intent, and set up a Light Screen to defend itself. “Hit ‘em with a- huh?” She knew that barrier – Grampa could make the same one!

Which meant that she knew how to counter it.

“To the skies, G! An aerial assault!” And so he did, bypassing the screen altogether by dive-bombing his prey. The Starmie teetered back and forth, trying to keep its balance, but it wasn’t fast enough to dodge a Pokeball.

Pokemon could make suns?! Surprise shone in the trainer’s eyes, shortly before they squinted shut. ‘Note to self. Fake suns are almost as bright as real suns.’ “Keep your eyes on the prize,” she called, as if her Pokemon needed a reminder not to blind itself. “and close the gap with a Quick Attack!” Her Scizor was a Pokemon of few words, but Annie had learned to draw his thoughts out of the few expressions he showed. If he hadn’t had her back to her, she’d have known that the narrowing of his eyes and the quiet grunt said ‘Finally!’.

With that, he was off, a burst of speed bringing him straight to his target. Trying to tear off a limb made for a rude greeting, and so he opted for a closed fist to the Lurantis’ chest. Behind him, Annie let out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding. Her Pokemon was strong, no doubt about that, but he was fierce, and not afraid of drawing blood. She’d worked hard to show him another way to fight, but his strength had already claimed one life-

No. She didn’t need to think about that. A gym leader wasn’t to be underestimated, and her beasts would never let it come to that. If anything, they needed to be the worried ones.

“That’s what I like to hear! Camp Annie Tenet Number One: Make every impression a strong one! Being a superhero’s a good way to get that done. Maybe I’ll have to look into getting myself a cape for that. And a hat. A really cool, fancy hat, so everybody knows that I’ve arrived.” She touched a finger to her bottom lip. “Although… I think you’ve inspired me. The Camp’s got five rules to live by, but maybe we’ll need a sixth. Oreo’s Tenet. Something about not leaving anybody behind.” She smiles and nodded to herself. “I’ll figure something out and let you know. Somehow. Maybe I’ll get somebody to announce it on the news.” The sly edge to her grin made it hard to tell whether she thought that was a joke.

“I’ll get to it, then! It’s a long road to wherever the wind takes us next, and the days aren’t getting any longer!” She sprang up onto her feet and walked over to collect her bag. “I’ll probably head in the opposite direction of the fire and see what’s out there. After the Camp eats breakfast, of course!” As nice as it would have been to stick around, summoning a two-metres sea beast into somebody else’s tree house was bound to end badly. She took the pancakes off the plate, folded them in half and held them as if they were pieces of paper. “Of course I wouldn’t! You were nice to me, and you didn’t have to be. A good deed like that deserves to be repaid. I just haven’t figured out how yet… But I always do, eventually!”

Beat one Pokemon, huh? It sounded simple enough, and the thought showed on her face. “I can do that! Probably. Well, we can. How about it, Clamp?” Her bug fluttered his wings – mostly to regulate his temperature, but partly to show that he was fine with it. Their enemy leapt onto the scene, prompting Annie to put a finger to her bottom lip. A cute Pokemon – she’d have to get one of them some time. Looked like a bug type. The scythes, much like Clamp’s old ones, told that they’d be having a close combat match.

If that was the case, only one move made sense to use first. “Alright, buddy. Remember your training and the Camp Annie Tenets, and we’ll have this in the bag!” He gently bobbed his head to nod, his eyes never leaving his soon-to-be foe. Once Annie felt confident that she was out of harm’s reach- “We’re starting off strong with a Swords Dance!” Clamp closed his eyes, channelling a blue glow to his arms. He drew them across his chest and spun on the spot, strengthening his attacks. Not the most interesting opening move, perhaps, but their opponent was a gym leader. Annie could be confident, but she’d have to show some smarts to back it up. Or at least, what she thought was smart.

If a beast decided to follow her in (or something was already waiting for her), things were going to get ugly. It wasn’t as if Annie had many other options. The night was dark and full of terrors, and the weather would have her weak soon enough. She ventured into the cave, which could at least provide shelter and cover from her foes.

She didn’t venture far in before she set to work starting a fire, keeping the entrance in her sights. She needed to know if anything was coming in, and that her escape route was clear. She’d deal with the wind occasionally blowing in, as long as it wouldn’t stop her from making a small fire pit.

It was going to take a while. She’d been quick to secure matches when she’d fled home, and a little help from an electric Pokemon went a long way. Without those, and with the threat of wind to snuff out any flames, she had to rely on wood, dry leaves, one twig, and tireless hands. Friction would grant her a spark – eventually.

The first happy recipient of many, Annie thought. The girl’s smile only made hers grow. Her glee almost cancelled out Fernando’s disregard for her challenge. Almost. It quickly became clear that the man was a bit of a killjoy, and not just when it came to delivering presents. She couldn’t help but wonder why he had turned up if he was going to be a downer the whole time, but some small, sensible part of her advised against asking. Instead it directed her towards the real treasure of Christmas – sweet treats.

“The cool Santa, on the other hand, needs a lot of energy to get through the night!” There were few things Annie loved more than free food, which was a rarity at any other time of the year. If the Pokemon didn’t stop her from double dipping, she would claim a pair of cookies for herself, dirtying her beard with crumbs. “Take good care of yourself, young trainer! See you next year!” And with that, she was off to ‘bless’ another party-goer, Monty taking her place shortly after.

Her next victim stood out by not standing at all. A grown man, cowering in the corner of the room seemed like the perfect target for holiday cheer. She tip-toed across the room, sneaking as best she could (in a red and white jumpsuit, in the middle of a party) and stopped behind him. She opened her sack and searched for the perfect gift. If the man didn’t move, he’d soon find a new addition to his costume – a paper crown, handing from his left horn.

“Ho-Oh-Ho! Looks like you need some more non-denominational spirit, old mister!”

TL;DR: Annie takes a cookie from Ruby Walker , declares herself a better Santa than FERNANDO SILPH , and moves on to torment kyle lopez instead.
