‘Ooooh, I know that one! That’s Ghost Twig!’ The girl could’ve really benefitted from a Pokedex, or some time outside with a real trainer. Regardless, she was familiar with the Pokemon, and she’d had her chance to capture it before. She also knew that it wasn’t much of a threat unless she made herself one, so there was no harm in letting the spirit get back to its business. She would do the same.

“That just sounds like we need to start up a performance some time! Well, us being your two and Melody. I’m not much of a singer. Or dancer. But I bet I’d be a great announcer!” If nothing else, she had the enthusiasm and confidence for the job. The rest of his words drew out a more curious look. She leaned forward a little, hands on her hips. “Treating Pokemon fairly? What, are you one of those ranger types? Out defending the region and all that?” Not a bad job to have, if Annie’s tone was anything to go by.

She opened her mouth to continue, but Melody’s call cut her off. Yet another fish was approaching, mouth open to prepare an attack. Annie whipped her head round, and the smile fled from her face. “Oh, come o- Melody, another song!” As always, her companion was happy to oblige, sending an array of notes towards the would-be attacker. The second attack came in the form of a Pokeball to its head, which the Lapras would swim over to retrieve. “Whatever. I could use a few more water types anyway. Who says Mel should have all the fun?”

“A professor?” Her head cocked to one side, much like a confused puppy. “Like a travelling one? With the scanner thingy?” She drew closer to the man, suddenly much more intrigued. “I’ve never met a real professor before! At least, not one that told me they were one. How does that even work? Do people pay you to go out and learn? Do you teach people? Well, I guess so, since you’re teaching me. Scrap that question. What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever discovered?”

She’d ended up right next to the man, assuming that his Pokemon hadn’t stopped her approach. Blitz hung back, and looked unimpressed with her. He only spoke up to announce the approach of more Pokemon. “What about those guys?” She pointed to the pair, who briefly gave pause. “Are those fairy Pokemon? How do you even decide which Pokemon are fairies? Is it how because of how cute they are? Because these guys are looking suuuuper cute. C’mon over, cuties!” She’d slipped into a voice otherwise reserved for babies, her hands on her knees as she watched the pair. Just as the man had taught, she used her intentions to ease the tension. The Bellossom dared to move first, and for her efforts, she was offered a Pokeball. “You seem like a sweetheart. How would you like to join Camp Annie?” The Pokemon didn’t run away, which was good enough for Annie! Her capsule met the grass-type’s head, and that was that.

Annie put a finger to her bottom lip. “Sounds like a wise man’s words,” she muttered, her tone implying that it didn’t suit him much. “But I’ll try to think of it more.” He had some good points, and maybe even good intentions, but he was threatening to ruin the points he’d earned from her with his chuckles. She realised a moment later that he wasn’t laughing at her – just the idea of being normal. At least they could agree on that much.

“I guess I get it. Normal people spend their whole lives just drifting through, blending in. Sounds… dull. And boring. And lame. I don’t know about getting all those holes in me though. That sounds… painful.” Then again, she wasn’t in much of a position to judge. She was lucky that her clothes could be mistaken for a planned outfit, and not the cobbled together batch of charity shop clothes that they were. “If I wanted to give myself some flare – and I do – I would go for something less… permanent. Like a signature style or a hat. A really fancy, one-of-a-kind hat. A leader-y hat, so everybody knows who’s in charge.”

He purred under Evan’s hand, and met the Vaporeon’s eyes with hope and happiness. Small as he may have been, he wasn’t easily unnerved- even as the other trainer tugged him aside. He merely looked confused, as did Annie, but only the latter jumped as the Simisage tried to take a chunk out of its prey. The Shinx was on the alert for more enemies, but only found a Vulpix peering out from behind a rock. Its large eyes reflected curiosity instead of intimidation – a welcome change from the waves of Pokemon they’d been facing. Bolt looked to his trainer for orders; once she’d steadied her heart from the attack, she nodded to him. “Alright, go make a friend.”

Off he went, keeping to a walk and showing a faint smile, so the wild one knew that he meant no harm. That left Annie more time to interrogate the old man. “Why so many, then? Doesn’t it hurt, or take a while to take on and off? Don’t they get cold at night or something? And why try so hard to stand out anyway? I mean, I’ve got my reasons, but people call them silly all the time.” Likely because she only told them half of it. “So I wanna hear yours. Maybe there’s some secret that I’m missing.”

The Shinx returned from his mission, new friend not far behind. Both of them looked up at the trainer expectantly. That was all that she needed to see. She pulled out a Pokeball and showed it to the Vulpix. It didn’t back away, which was her cue to tap it against its head.

Annie wasn’t about to let a little something like no money stop her from spreading holiday cheer.

She’d found an absurdly long stretch of red cloth at a thrift store, and stitched into a very baggy onesie. A quick trip to Oldale Town allowed her to cobble together scraps of wool from the Pokemon she’d helped defend. She’d use that to cover most of her face in ‘feathers’, beard and massive eyebrows included. A ring of black face paint covered what little of the skin under her eyes was visible, and a Santa hat had most of her hair bundled into it. Completing the look was a white sack. There were a few presents in there, but the majority of it was everything Annie had to her name, dragged behind her as she entered the room.

Of course she went for the food first, but she’d barely taken two steps into the room when she noticed a problem. There was another gift giver. He’d had more money to make his outfit, but it lacked the spirit of Budget Delibird. It wasn’t the only thing that had lost its soul. The man delivered presents to the party-goers, but he did so with all the enthusiasm of a minimum-wage employee. What was the point in looking nice if he wasn’t even trying?!

No, she wouldn’t stand for that. In fact, she marched (with a slight side of waddle) across the room, no doubt nudging a few people, and perhaps a Sceptile, with her sack as she passed.

“You’re doing it wrong,” Annie grumbled, stopping beside the man. She cleared her throat, as if she needed any help drawing people’s attention, and raised her voice:

“Ho-Oh-Ho! Merry unspecified holiday!” She tried to give them a jolly low voice, and succeeded in at least one of those. “I bet you’ve been a good girl this year! Let’s see what I have for you…” An eagle-eyed observer would get a sneak peak inside the sack, onto to see that it was mostly made up of her backpack. She’d stuffed a few goodies inside there, however, and she offered one of them, small enough to fit in her closed fist, to the vaguely familiar girl.

Buying actual gifts would have easily doubled the cost of Annie’s costume, so Ruby received the best Annie could find for half a pokedollar. It was a single fortune cookie, still in its packaging. Should the girl dear to open it, she’d find a message inside:

‘Be a generous friend and a fair enemy.’

Big Bird wouldn't bother to check; instead, she was giving Fernando the smuggest of smiles, as if daring him to outdo her.

An absolute cutie popped itself out of the grass as she passed. The girl stopped again, turned to see the little beast, and felt her heart swell two sizes. She tried (and mostly failed) to stop herself squealing with glee, but she had a slight problem. Only three balls, and she didn’t know what else was waiting for her. She willed her heart to be still, crouched down and gave the Vulpix a pat on the head. “I’ll be back for you soon,” she muttered – and off she went.

Was that a free Pokeball in the distance? There was nothing Annie liked more than free stuff, so she hurried over to add it to her collection. It wasn’t until the ball turned around and showed its eyes that Annie realised it wasn’t quite the goodie she’d been hoping for. And it looked pissed. She looked to it. Then to her Drampa, as relaxed as ever. She slowly shook her head to herself. They could fight angry fake items later, but until then they were moving on.

“TLC? Charity? That kinda rhymes. Aaaand it gives me an idea! Hold on a second.” Those sentences alone would ring alarm bells for anybody that knew the girl, but none of them were around to stop her! She places the tray of treats down on a counter and pulled out a Pokeball. Out came her Zorua, who seemed mildly confused by the summon.

“Kit, I need a favour. Can you do the eyebrow thing for me?” The fox cocked his head to one side, lost. Annie pointed to her eyebrows, a finger on each one. Somehow, that was enough to make his eyes light up, and he eagerly nodded. A red aura overcame the Zorua’s form, and both it and he grew several feet taller. When the glow faded, the Pokemon was gone, and in its place… a child? Much like Annie, he’d chosen loose clothes, but he was almost normal. Almost. His eyes were a tad too round, as if in permanent surprise, and his eyebrows matched the markings of his true form in shape and colour.

Not that any of that bothered Annie. No, she was already on the move, returning to give the tray to her Pokemon. With him in charge of holding the treats, she was free to perform. Annie dramatically cleared her throat, took two goosesteps forward, and began her song and dance:

“Marshmallow goodness, selling out fast!
Come and get them while stocks last!
You’ll support a charity,
That helps to fix Slateport City!”

Her Pokemon sniggered, and he probably wasn’t the only one. She didn’t care. She’d spent too long being ignored by the world to let a little something like embarrassment stop her from shining. Besides, as long as people were paying attention, she was doing her job.

The first of many appeared – a small rodent fellow poking its head out from behind a tree. She paused mid-step, and the two eyed each other carefully. It wasn’t hostile, and it wasn’t particularly Annie, and so she had no business with it. The girl pulled a blue berry from her pocket and tossed it towards the Chespin’s hiding place. While it revealed itself further to investigate, she ventured further into the zone.

There was no arena. Not as far as Annie could see, at least. Perhaps around one of the floral corridors, the gym leader awaited. A quick poke around a few corners disproved that theory, and introduced her to several potential routes through the building. Either the gym leader needed some lessons in signage, or their first task was to find their way into the heart of the gym. She turned to Clamp.

“Think we’ll get in trouble if you chopped it all down?”
The Scizor slowly nodded.
“Alright then. Plan B. Let’s get to searching!”

It took all of thirty seconds for Annie to realise that splitting up had been a terrible idea, and another two minutes after that to realise that she’d lost Clamp. An awkward game of 'Marco Scizor' eventually reunited them, and had the Pokemon guide her towards progress. From there, she took charge, and they moved as one. ‘Two steps forward, one step back’ was the theme for their maze adventure, but the further they travelled (and more importantly, the more Annie looked to the bramble patterns to determine where they’d already been), the less time they spent retracing their steps. It took some time, probably a fair bit longer than the average, but eventually the pair found themselves in a stone field. A woman was waiting for them; she had to be their mark.

Annie cleared her throat. “Hello, Miss Gym Leader lady! I’m Annie Mei, this is Clamp, and we’re here to get ourselves a gym badge! …How do we do that?” Clamp, as usual, looked unimpressed.

A fork on the road. The left could have led to a cave. Shelter… But for her, or an enemy? To the right, moisture. Could she survive the night without water, she thought? The damp in the darkness seemed to lead towards that, but it wasn’t a necessity – yet. Then there was the centre, darker still and disturbed by wild Pokemon. She saw no reason to go down that path.

She only kept still for a few seconds, knowing damn well how dangerous stopping in the darkness could be. She ventured down the rocky road, a quiet determination in her eyes. Along the way, she’d swipe loose branches off the ground; they’d be the start of a fire soon enough.

“Alright, Clamp! This is it. Big Day. Gym challenge – the first of many! We’re finally stepping out of the shadows, and into greatness! The spotlight’ll be on me and you, but you’ll be doing the heavy lifting! Luckily, we’ve trained for this. Well, no luck involved, just a lot of hard work building up to today.”

The Scizor had barely reacted, staring down at its trainer. She paced up and down, around him, making wild gestures and forgetting to use her indoor voice. Nothing out of the ordinary, in other words.

“You’re a toughie, Clamp. A little too rough at times, but we’ve mostly worked past that. More importantly, when it comes to fighting, you’re one of the best I’ve got.”

A Pokemon didn’t have to be with Annie for long before hearing one of her grand speeches – hell, this was the third one he’d been present for. That week. Though he couldn’t understand completely, he’d learned a few things. First was that her ‘pep talks’ came immediately before something big, something dangerous, or something stupid – and where Annie was involved, there was often overlap between the two.

“That’s why I’ve chosen you to represent Camp Annie. The world will be watching. Maybe. Probably. I didn’t actually ask about cameras, but imagine that there were! That’s at least… sixteen more reasons why we can’t lose!”

Secondly, he had a sneaking suspicion that the talks were a way for her to hype herself up more than any of her Pokemon. Third, that she would never admit as much. She’d owned the false bravado so much it stopped being an act once in a while, but in the face of big challenges, she needed to prepare herself. but it mattered little. It still did the job of inspiring most of her allies… Largely because she wouldn’t stop until she felt that they were.

He’d learned that the hard way. Rather, he waas still learning that.

“We’ve got this. You and me, together. And I know we’ve got what it takes, because otherwise we’d have never made it this far! After all of this work, it’s time that we got our first prize!” He closed his eyes and decided to give in. Arms raised into the air, he cheered in agreement. The girl’s eyes lit up, for she knew how hard it was to get emotion out of the bug. She returned the favour, placing her hands on her hips and puffing out her chest. “That’s the spirit! I knew you’d come around eventually. Now, let’s go and kick some ass.”

She marched straight into the gym, only having half an idea of what awaited her.
