She awoke. Her hands immediately went to her pockets; her eyes widened once she realised how empty they were. Then she remembered where she was, and what she had signed up for. When she’d begun her journey away from home, waking up with lightened pockets was the stuff of nightmares. Most everything she owned fit inside them, back then. Now she at least had enough to fit a backpack. ‘Now’ being in general, not at that exact moment. The gym challenge had left her with three Pokeballs, a flare and the slightly oversized clothes on her back.

She knew how to survive well enough, thanks to painful trial and error. The girl had escaped a war-torn region, and even then didn’t have a roof to call her own. Compared to that, how bad could a forest sleepover be?

The first step, as it almost always was, was to find shelter. The forest was too open. Too many altitudes for any unfriendly faces to find her, and there were unfriendly faces somewhere out there. That had been part of the deal, and perhaps the only reason she’d been allowed partners. The girl set off, Pokeball in hand, to find an escape from the cold and the wilds. Her steps were quiet, not just because she was small and travelled light, but because experience had taught her not to draw attention to herself.

One would’ve been right to assume that Annie couldn’t afford access to the Safari Zone. Rather, she’d sent her Weavile to ‘hunt’ for money (on the ground and not in pockets, she’d insist to anybody that asked), and he’d mistaken the ticket for currency. The owner was long gone, leaving her with an opportunity that would only go to waste otherwise.

And so, there she stood, Grampa by her side. What she was after, she had no clue. Heck, she barely knew what was on offer, besides a few cuties. That was all the more reason for her to be hopeful as she wandered into the grass, waiting to find her next new friend.

The man had made Annie’s day – and made her head swell three sizes. A grin was plastered on her face as she urged the Lapras to sail on. She was almost within arm’s reach when another distraction popped up. A fuming slender fish made its presence known, head whipping back and forth between the two trainers. Annie’s smile wavered momentarily, and she opened her mouth to utter a command. She never got the chance. A blue bird swooped in out of left field, taking the poor fish on a ride to parts unknown. The trainer sat, motionless, mouth slightly agape, unsure whether to laugh or mourn the creature. The best option, apparently, was to pretend that she’d never seen it. A few seconds later, she was on dry land.

She opened her mouth. Stopped again. She was looking down, at him. It wasn’t every day that she met an adult smaller than herself, and her eyes said as much, but her mouth daren’t not. “We do our best! Melody’s a good singer, but making sure her moves hit what they were supposed to took a while. Just thinking about it makes me want to…” Her voice trailed off into a yawn, much to her partner’s bemusement. “I’m glad that we’re past that. What about your guy? If I had to guess, they’re a good dancer, right?”

The next one arrived. Clamp took half a step forward before remembering his master. She showed the ghost of a smile and nodded to him. “Alright, go ahead and attack.” It would take all of two seconds for Annie to regret her words. The bug leapt forward, his Quick Attack leaving the Magnezone without a chance.

His pincers closed on the steel skin. Crushed it like it was foil. The body creaked and groaned. Its host screamed, a metallic cry that would revisit Annie in her nightmares for quite some time. The Scizor, strengthened by the Swords Dance, had made his first blow a killing one, and he hardly seemed to care. Not until he looked to his master for approval, and found only horror on her face. The silent Magnezone hit the ground like a rock, and judging by the girl’s knees, she was soon to follow.

Tears welled in her eyes. She’d seen death before – who in Kanto hadn’t? – but never at the hands of her own Pokemon. Not by the one she was training to be better. Concern and confusion took over his face. The first tear fell, and she returned her monster to its Pokéball. She cried there, alone. Cried at her failure. Cried at a loss of what to do next. Cried more when she realized what she had to do next. The deed was done, and it was terrible, but it didn’t have to go to waste. Cruel as it was, she knew a buyer for a corpse, and she needed the money badly. And so she sent the Scizor out again, and pointed to the body. “Just take it. We’re leaving.”

A video is spammed across the region’s virtual hotspots. Social media, forums, YouTube, all flooded with the same clip, and a link to a forum post. Opening the video brings you face to face with a wide-eyed teenage girl. Judging by the people and desks around her, she’s in a public space, perhaps a computer lab, but her voice doesn’t take that into account.[break][break]

“Hey all! Annie Mei here to send you some non-denominational cheer! The holidays are almost here, but why wait to start making somebody smile. I can’t think of a reason, so that’s why we’re doing a Secret Santa! Well, that and I really think it sounds like fun." [break][break]

"It’s simple - a bunch of us Hoenn trainers get presents for each other, but nobody knows who’s giving them a present until they get it. That means everybody gets a little surprise, and maybe even a new friend, before the holiday even starts. Nobody will know who you have except me and you, and I won't tell! In the spirit of Secret Santa, it would be ideal to keep your recipient in the dark until you're ready to send your gift.

She still smiled. There was something sweet about seeing a grown man, her supposed superior, so flustered over a simple question. She’d never say it out loud – she didn’t trust herself to say it right, and he’d never show his heart again if he thought she saw him as a child. A cheeky comment wouldn’t hurt, though. “Now you’re more like a newspaper. Black and white and red all over.” Another giggle escaped her. “Well, at least one girl thinks you’re doing just fine. And I’ve got an eye for talent and high skill, so you’ve gotta be doing something right!”

It was her turn to show a glint in her eyes, as she almost always did when her Pokemon became the main subject. There she was, running her mouth again. “Oh yeah, Kit’s a little devil! He’s always full of energy and likes to wander off, and sometimes it takes me hours to find him! He can shapeshift- well, only kinda. When he gets nervous or feels like being a butt, he’ll transform and suddenly it’s ten times harder to figure out where he is, because he could be anybody! But he’s got a good heart in him, and him and Fortuna are all that I have from Kanto. Sure, he can be annoying sometimes, but he’s family.” She allowed herself a moment to breathe, showing the kind of relaxed smile that could only come from gushing about a loved one, with delicious food and a kind stranger in an odd tree house. She’d practically forgotten about the fire that had brought them together.

“I know he’d never leave me behind. Not for real. So I want to keep him around too. You get that, right?” She quickly shook her head. “I don’t have to ask. I can see that you do. You and your orphanage.” He was a good person. A very nervous, initially icy, somewhat confused man, but a good man nonetheless. He just needed a bit of help to see more of that.

“Young, huh? Yeah, I keep telling myself that, but sometimes it gets me anyway.” Her eyes flicked to her plate, if only for a second. “But it works out, mostly. I’ve got my hands full travelling this whole region, and taking care of my Pokemon along the way. I’ll probably-“ Hopefully- “figure something out along the way, and if not… Then I’ll just keep going, and at least by then I’ll have some good stories to tell.”

She lowered her fork to fill her belly some more, but stopped short when she noticed how few pancakes she had left. “Already?” Mild surprise showed itself, but it didn’t last. “Well, I guess I’m full! I’ll leave the rest for my team to share, if that’s alright. Oh, and thanks again for the food! I know that I asked why and all, but I would’ve been in real trouble if it wasn’t for you. I’ll find a way to return the favour someday, promise.”

Annie didn’t realise that they had a challenger until Clamp sped off, greeting the Seismitoad with a claw to the face. “Wha- Clamp, slow down! You don’t go until I until I say so!” He leapt away from the foe’s counterattack, but whether or not her calls had anything to do with that was unclear. Still, at least for the moment, the Pokemon held fire. It wouldn’t last and his trainer knew it. Neither Pokemon would take their eyes off the other, daring them to make the next move.

“Alright… We’ve got this, Clamp. Show me a Swords Dance first.” The beast drew his claws across his chest, charging them with a red aura. The Seismitoad took that as the green light and opened its mouth to fire its next attack. It didn’t get the chance – Clamp was faster, and thanks to his last move, much stronger. An unrequested X-Scissor across its chest was enough to knock the fight out of him, and probably leave some nasty scars.

It was rough. Even with strength boosts, most Pokemon knew how to hold back their attacks. The Scizor, on the other hand, was staring down at his fallen foe, daring him to move so that he could finish the job. “Clamp. Back to me.” The girl’s voice had lost most of its enthusiasm, replaced with a most demanding, and perhaps frustrated tone. He didn’t budge. “Even if he was getting up, you’ve got nothing to learn from beating up the same guy twice.” That seemed to be enough to make him turn away, returning to his trainer’s side.

She sighed. They were going to be there for a while.

Another day, another training session, though theirs was a little special. Of all the Pokemon Annie had commandeered in Hoenn, Clamp was amongst the most powerful – and the most eager to fight. From the moment he was sent out, she could see his eyes darting around the cave, searching for his next target. She could appreciate the enthusiasm, but that level of bloodthirst could easily land them in trouble against another trainer – or worse, a ranger.

And so she’d visited the cave, in hopes of reigning him in. “Alright, Clamp, we’ll start off simple! Soon enough we’ll run into a wild Pokemon, and you just need to follow my orders to beat it. I’m sure that you can handle it!” The Scizor didn’t respond – it barely did, she’d noticed – but the piercing eyes fixed on her told that her words had been heard all the same.
