Apparently, other Pokemon had reared their heads too. Not that that was a problem for a trio of trainers; in short order, the wilds had either fled or been captured. Still, any hopes of a peaceful evening with her family had been dashed with their arrival. There were worse problems to have, Annie admitted to herself. “Alright, guys. I’ll talk to you later, kay?” A trio of Pokeballs reclaimed all but her Shinx, who looked a little puzzled to be left behind. “You’re on guard duty, Bolt. Camp Annie’s defence depends on you.” It was a small honour to most, but a great one for the young cat. His eyes lit up and he took to pacing up and down the ‘camp’. As in, the sleeping bag and campfire.

That left his trainer free to regard the other two trainers. “Anyway, you should probably figure out a way to stop your Pokemon running off like that, especially if it means disturbing art! And, you know, family dinner. But it’s alright, I’ll let it slide. Even I’ve had some difficult Pokemon for a little while, and I get that it can be tricky sometimes!” The girl’s folded arms and devious grin left her teetering dangerously between playfully overconfident and outright haughty, but it was up to the observers to decide which was meant.

“Being odd is fine by me. Just means that I stand out from the crowd. But nah, this girl just turned up right before you did.” Bolt had stopped pacing, and chosen to stare at a Pokemon in the distance. Not that Annie had noticed. “I haven’t really been looking for any Pokemon. Just wanted a place to rest for the night. I don’t think many big Pokemon hang out in caves, though. Something about the ceilings might bother them, right?” The stare had become an intimidating glare, directed at the Hypno in the distance. No sounds were exchanged, but it got the message regardless and backed out of sight. “Besides, this is- was such a peaceful place! Doesn’t seem like the kind of area you’d go to to start picking fights.”

“That sounds like grandpa talk to me, but you don’t look that old.” She started to brush herself off, though that was quickly proving to be a futile effort. Even if her clothes hadn’t been soiled by the dirt and grass, her outfit was loose at best and poorly-fitting at worst. The Zorua moving to sit atop her head wasn’t doing her hair any favours, and neither was the twig poking out of it. Judging by her lack of concern, the mess was part of the girl’s daily life.

“That depends. Big guys, little guys, it’s not important. If they’re not strong yet, then I’ll make them strong, just like me.” She punctuated the last three words with a waggling finger, since he seemed to doubt her power. “The most important thing is that they look like they can abide by Camp Annie’s 5 Tenets!” Kit barked his approval to an impassioned statement, as he did every time she used that tone. “I’ll know what I’m looking for when I see it. Anyway, it’s no good for you to profile a Pokemon, especially not one beginning to me! Kit’s got more than a few tricks up his sleeve, and you won’t get to see them if you keep saying that he’s small fry.”

And with that, the Cloyster was banished from the surface, saving Annie the hassle of a tedious battle. “Thanks! Cool trick, by the way!” She waved towards the man, as if there was a chance that he’d miss her words otherwise. She gestured for Melody to make a move, and so the Lapras started ferrying her over to him. “I’m Annie Mei! Up-and-coming trainer extraordinaire! Just out and about, and definitely not lost!” They made it about two-thirds of the way there before a blue blob blocked their path. No, not a path – yet another sea-dweller, but this one rounder. Cuter. If the grin on her face was anything to go by, Annie liked what she saw.

“We’re gonna catch this one, so nothing fierce, alright? Just a little Melody.” She giggled at her own joke, while the Lapras got to work starting another sing. The new tune was faster paced, and with each note, a manifestation of her power floated out of her mouth and towards the Wailmer. It only took one to send the beast into a drowsy spell, and the next had it threatening to sink beneath the waves. Annie acted quickly, tossing a ball towards its face. Body. Being.

He fixed his eyes on her, and she got the feeling that she shouldn’t have asked. It was the same sudden shift her Weavile made whenever she made a pun – every joke bringing her one day closer to being silenced permanently. On the bright side, the experience meant that she didn’t flinch at the man’s stare. Rather, she looked mildly confused. “You know. I mean, I hope that you do.”

While he showed his partner affection, Bolt nuzzled his head against his trainer’s leg, prompting her to reach down and give him a few headpats. It couldn’t last, of course. They’d drawn attention to themselves, and that meant that the wild Pokemon were curious and aggressive. The thug took charge, telling his Pokemon to soak the scene instead of going all-out attacking. Bolt stood on all fours, showing his look of realisation a few seconds before his trainer’s. “Oh. Well, there’s an idea.” She looked down at her Shinx. He didn’t need to be told. Instead, he sprung forward, landing at the water’s edge, staring down the Camerupt that dared threaten their party. “Finish them off with a Discharge!” She pointed at their foes, entirely for dramatic effect. It went surprisingly well with the devious grin she’d grown. Bolt let sparks fly, an array of golden bolts shooting from his person, across the water and to both wilds simultaneously. Augmented by the water, the attack was enough to make them collapse.

“…Huh. That was actually pretty cool. Why didn’t I think of that?” Her partner didn’t return to her, but approached Evan’s party. He raised a paw, partially in greeting, mostly to test the waters. Perhaps they could be friends. Perhaps their trainers could be friends too. The attack had emboldened the girl (not that she needed a confidence boost to begin with), enough that she could give a comprehensive answer:

“Fancy suit and tie, tailored. Glasses, probably. Short hair, straight from the barber. No tattoos. Or piercings. Or jewellery, except maybe a watch. You’re batting zero for, like, at least six there.” She was blunt, and at least a little rude, but that only happened deliberately if she felt offended or at ease. Transitioning from one to the other had to count for something, right? If nothing else, he could take comfort in knowing that she wasn’t one to talk about presentation. The ‘trainer extraodinaire’s funds were sorely lacking, if her outfit was anything to go by, and she’d been standing around in the cave long enough for beads of sweat to start rolling down her face.

“How did you hear about them?” She glanced at the man, and realised that the answer was on his face. He was old, wise, and wore glasses. Everybody knew that a trainer with glasses was a certified nerd. A foreign nerd, at that. Perhaps where he was from, the trees were more common or famous. Still, it would be nice to hear his answer. If nothing else, his enthusiasm for her newest party member was infectious, and she found her smile growing with his.

“They do seem… friendlier now.” Mostly because her Pokemon weren’t laying waste to their home any longer, but that was a small detail. She raised a hand in greeting to the Sawsbuck, its coat best suited for a winter that Hoenn would never see. “It’s been a while since I saw snow, now that I think about it. It’s not really a thing here… It’s a shame. My Pokemon’ll never know a snowball fight! Maybe with a bit of imagination-” Blitz grunted, gesturing towards new arrivals. The sight of berries being gathered summoned more Pokemon to them – the poster boy for gluttonous monsters everywhere, and bounding past it, a giant ball of fluff with a Pokemon attached to it. The Whimsicott landed before what was left of the berries, stubby arms raised in excitement. Annie fell silent, but her widened eyes spoke volumes.
“Oh. My. Cheese-and-crackers-you’re-the-most-adorable-thing-I’ve-seen-in-weeks! Don’t tell the others that I said that, Blitz!” The Weavile grunted. “You’ve gotta join us. Hey, buddy, get it a welcome gift!” He didn’t budge. Annie lowered herself to her Pokemon’s level again, giving him a pleading look. “Pretty pleaaase. For me?” She earned another grunt from him, but since he dashed off to get the job done, she let it slide. “Wow, this being nice thing isn’t a bad idea! Good job, stranger dude!”

She didn’t pay the Lickitung much mind, for she’d already fallen in love with the fluffball. She spent most of the waiting time crouching down and cooing to the Whimsicott, extending a hand to pet her and beckoning Florian over to do the same. Blitz returning with a small mountain of berries gave Annie and her soon-to-be partner a reason to cheer, even if the Weavile’s deadpan expression threatened to dampen the mood. Once the Whimsicott had enjoyed her fill, Blitz silently (and clearly begrudgingly) offered what was left to Florian’s party, and then to the Lickitung. Meanwhile, Annie took the opportunity to offer a Pokeball to her new friend. “You’ll come with me, right? We’ll get all kinds of berries and go on so many adventures!”

Caius earned himself a stink eye for his little joke, but it wouldn’t last. Nobody had been hurt, and the old man’s unapologetic comment sounded a lot like something she would say. That meant that he was alright in her book, and by extension, Kit’s as well.

“Being small just means I can fit into more places than you can! Nothing wrong with that.” The Zorua rapidly nodded in agreement, though it was unclear whether he understood her or simply bobbed his head to every passionate statement she made. “It’s just me and my Pokemon today!” He nodded again, so probably the latter. “And most days. But that’s all we need! Buuuut it would be nice to add more to the family, so here we are!” She stood up and walked over to claim her prize – the Pokeball.

“Besides that, we’re just sightseeing. Haven’t been in Hoenn for too long, so we’re making our way through and getting stronger as we do. Just like you, I’m guessing. But with less fire.”

“It was pretty nice, yeah. I guess I didn’t really think of it that way." Simply curious. Fair enough, the girl’s face said. She’d have to give that another try some other time. The ghost bark didn’t seem like the best practice dummy, especially not with that cry. It left the girl visibly unnerved, and her Weavile’s eyes fixed on it. Just in case. The man seemed to be an expert in the art of pacifism, however. He approached the wild one, and it didn’t fight, or even shy away. He’d earned a friend.

It was a good lesson to learn, and with perfect timing. The Weavile gestured towards the trees, or more specifically, one tree. One moving tree, almost upon them. It had faces. Plural. Two of them were smiling down at them. Annie was staring back, gobsmacked. Blitz elbowed her on the side, bringing her back to reality. They were not fighting that, and running didn’t seem likely... Not when it could swing its neck down and crush them. No… They needed to think more like the kind old man nearby.

Annie bent her knees to reach her partner’s height. Her gaze flickered between him and the Exeggcutor as she whispered in his ear. He looked confused, and then unconvinced, but with a bit of nudging (physically and verbally), he took slow steps out of the colossus’ range and dashed into the trees.

The minute he took to return was awkward. Annie was nervous and hesitant to take her eyes off the pole. “Er… When do I ask it to be my friend? Does it even know what I’m saying?” Probably not – at least three of the heads seemed to have spaced out. It was Blitz’ return that regained their attention. More specifically, the handfuls of berries he’d gathered on his errand, which were quickly devoured by the lowest head. That managed to get a smile on all of their faces, and therefore, a smile on Annie’s. All that was left for her to do was to use her Pokeball and hope.
