“You look a little less like an Oreo now.” He got a giggle out of her, though it was muffled by a mouth full of pancake. “You’re funny, you know? Not in a bad way, but aren’t you supposed to be the big old confident manly man? Superhero ranger guy? Crime-fighting protector of the realm?” She paused and furrowed her brow again. “Well, I guess you’re still two of those, but you sure don’t sound confident in that. So… I don’t know the word. Dismissive? Blaze? Something like that. Or maybe you’re just super-humble.”

“I don’t know if this is how all of you rangers are, but you’re doing a good thing, right? You’re allowed to own that. Give yourself a little pat on the back once in a while and all. Especially since-“ She’d started pointing again. “You haven’t once said that you enjoy what you’re doing, or that it’s fun, or that you like it. And I hope you do, because dang, it’d suck to work so hard for something you didn’t love, but..” She narrowed her gaze. Paused. Her lips contorted and her eyes darted around as she tried to decide if her questions were appropriate. “Do you enjoy it?” Another pause. “You don’t have to answer, actually.”

It was for the best, she thought, if she was the focus of their conversation for a little while. There wasn’t much that could keep her mood down – that she knew of -, and more importantly, she’d realised that her questions weren’t exactly first-meeting friendly. “I knew that I wanted to leave home, and to leave home I’d need a Pokemon. Things weren’t too great there even before Rocket showed up, so it wasn’t like it was a spur of the moment thing.” Did she mean the region, her hometown or her actual house? “Well, kinda. One day, things got really bad, so I grabbed Kit – my Zorua, he was like our house Pokemon – and got the heck out of dodge. I didn’t even have a Pokeball for a while. Luckily he liked me a lot so we made it work, but… Where was I going with this?”

She took a bite and tried to remember the question. “Oh! Yeah, not really. Besides travelling, I… don’t really... know what the plan is.” Oh. So there was something that could bring her mood down, and her gaze to the table. Her day-to-day life was so hectic, and her journeys were unplanned. She was too busy thinking of how she’d find her next meal to figure out where she was going in life. Part of her preferred it that way. Planning where she would be the next morning was bad enough, let alone the next five years. Let alone where she should be. Where she wanted to be.

So she didn’t. And with that, the smile returned. “I know one thing, at least! I wanna be remembered forever. This girl’s spent too long lurking in the shadows, and worked too hard getting here to go out quietly. The details don’t matter yet, but I’m sure this won’t be the last that you see of me.”

The first of many arrived – an unusually hostile hat and hair moved in for the kill. The Lapras, caught off-guard, brought its song to an abrupt end, but the Shinx and Zorua nearby leapt to attention, fur cackling and glowing with all sorts of threatening intent. Nobody was going to get away with striking one of their crew on their watch; fortunately, the attacker never got the chance.

In short order, the newcomer found herself face to face with Annie, whose shock had quickly given way to irritation. It showed. “You know, most people would just ask if we were being too loud. What’s up with that?” She turned to Melody, who was quickly shying away from the group. The girl’s face shifted again, concern taking hold as she rushed to the water’s edge. “No-no-no, it’s not your fault… Your singing’s great, just like always! When have I ever lied to you?”

With their trainer distracted, it was left to the two smallest Pokemon to take charge. They’d lost the glows that warned of incoming attacks, but judging by their glares, the girl had made a poor first impression.

Then came another trainer – taller, beefier, and to at least one of the Pokemon, more familiar. The Zorua didn’t take long to approach Caius, offering a gentle headbutt as a greeting. “Huh? Hey, it’s that guy again!” One of Annie’s arms was stretching out to pet a hesitant Lapras, while the other wildly waved to the man. “Sorry, trying to be a good mom over here. Only kinda succeeding. Apparently, some people didn’t like her singing.”

Whisper might not have been the only one. A trio of Pokemon had joined the party, and they didn’t look very happy to be there. Melody’s head was already turned away from them, so she was the first to call out, warning of her trainer of the Drampa rushing towards them. “Don’t worry. You’ve got this,” she muttered, watching as the beast leapt over the waterfall basin… Or tried to. It got halfway before Annie called for an “Ice Beam!”, and her Lapras followed through. Annie happened to knock a few things about the species, namely that they didn’t take kindly to ice attacks. The blast was enough to knock the beast into the water before it could come close.

Annie really needed to stop having bad ideas. She hadn’t heard the rumours of Tyranitar passing through, for she’d been in the area to spot their arrival. A rare herd, passing through! Emphasis on rare – that had to mean they’d be worthy additions to her team, especially with their size. Only one teensy problem. Attempting to claim one of mini-Godzilla’s young for herself probably wouldn’t go down well with the parents, and was almost definitely going to end in a fight… But what was life without a little risk?

She took a Pokeball in each hand – one empty, and the other containing one of her own. The first was lobbed into the herd to try and capture whatever it hit, while the other released her Scizor, ready to claim the ball and take up her defense.

A web sprung from nowhere but it never met its target. A surprised Annie turned to the devilman for answers, but he seemed a bit preoccupied with the battle. She realised that she should have been too. She bit her lip for a moment, hesitant to ask too much of her Pokemon, but if they weren’t careful they’d quickly be ambushed. “Bolt, think you can handle a Wild Charge?” The Shinx’s fur started shimmering with lightning before she even finished her sentence. He took off, electricity enveloping his entire body. He rammed himself into the rocky beast, the transfer of power enough to send it flying that time around. That was Annie’s cue to follow up with an attack – specifically, a Pokeball aimed right between the beast’s eyes. A damn good throw, and one she hoped wouldn’t be ruined by the thing breaking out.

“Doing good?” Her first priority was always her Pokemon. Small as he was, Kit had handled the backlash of his attack fairly well. “Think you can help out some more?” They both turned to eye Evan’s battle, only to realise that they weren’t needed. The Ariados, which she’d barely paid attention to until then, had ended up caught in its own web. The man and his Pokemon were calm and in control, in a way that Annie could only hope to be most of the time. She wouldn’t let it show, but it was a little impressive… And a decent reminder for her to try not to get into a fight with him.
A job easier said than done, when asked of Annie.

“Were you born like that?” She picked up right where they left off, brushing his horrible mockery of her aside. Sure, the first was still going on, but he seemed to have it under control. “I don’t mean the tattoos. Or the piercings, or the hair. Or your clothes, I guess. Your eyes.” Bolt, seemingly trying to mimic the Vaporeon, stuffed his way between his trainer’s legs to rest. If the Carkol was captured, he’d carry its capsule in his mouth. “Because it doesn’t make you look much like any owner I’ve seen. Besides, like, the drug kinds. Or the Rocket guys. Was that rude?” She didn’t leave much time for him to answer. “Well, consider it payback for earlier.” She paused, looking away from him with a furrowed brow.

“And… thanks for helping, I guess…”

Annie’s head whipped around, watching the mist float in to surround them. True to the man’s word, it didn’t seem to be an attack, but boy, did it look suspicious. Still, Blitz didn’t seem on edge (at least, no more than he usually was) once he returned to his trainer, Pokeball in hand. If he was calm, then she had nothing to worry about. “Good job, buddy. Well, maybe a bit on the overkill side, but you’re making good progress!” She rubbed the Weavile’s crown. Much like a teenage boy to his mother, he grumbled and frowned at the affection, but made no effort to shy away from it.

She claimed her prize from her partner and turned to the other trainer. She’d been a little distracted by the brief battle, but they’d had an encounter of their own… But- “You didn’t fight it?” The girl cocked her head to one side. That was an option? “Why did it just leave? What did you do to it?” Was it possible that she didn’t have to fight or flee from every wild Pokemon that dared approach? The little hamster wheel in her head was turning furiously, even as the next pair arrived.

A spooky twig, and a Chansey. She only knew the latter’s name because she had one of her own. Conveniently, it would be a good test subject for her new theory. Her Fortuna was more likely to hurt herself in a fight than do damage, and if her kin were the same… “Hey!” She called to the wild one, waving a hand in the air until she had her attention. “I hope that you have a wonderful day!” The Chansey gave her a blank stare for all of three seconds. Then she raised both of her arms into the air, as best a Chansey could, and returned the happy cheer. With its joy spread, it ran back into the forest, leaving Blitz and Annie with a pair of very puzzled expressions.

A girl could only wish to have as much success with her prey.

Annie was quiet (for once), keeping a close eye on the thrashing Cloyster. She didn’t know much about the Pokemon, but she could hazard a guess that it was a water type, which meant that Melody’s attacks wouldn’t do much to it. If the beast would simply swim itself out of dodge, they wouldn’t have a problem, but things were rarely that simple for her. It focused its glare on the girl, summoned a whirlpool… and managed to drop it on itself, prompting it to drop beneath the waves again. The bubbles rising from the water forewarned of its return; Annie reached for another Pokeball, only to stop short and eye the other trainer. What better way to make a friend than with a common enemy? “Actually, yeah. Knock ‘em dead. Well, not literally, but get it out of here.”

Outside of Meteor Falls, the Lapras’ tune would merely be considered enchanting. The cave echoed every note, as if playing alongside her, elevating the song to ‘haunting’. And very pleasing, in the ears of one Annie Mei and her party. They’d taken shelter from the darkness and the rain, and decided to make their pit stop a little more homely. Of course, they didn’t have much to establish Camp Annie with. One teenager-sized sleeping bag, a campfire and a half-empty backpack, to be exact.

In the absence of worldly possessions, it was the camp’s participants that brought it life. Melody’s species had always been favoured for their voice, and their eagerness to share it. From the base of the waterfall, she made the cave her audience. On dry land, a Shinx and a Zorua played cat and mouse with each other, occasionally interrupted by an overly-concerned Chansey. Annie caught sympathy in the man’s eyes, and returned it with a small smile – a bittersweet one. Most people knew what a young, lone traveller from Kanto meant, but she wouldn’t let its effects show. She’d gotten very good at not letting it show. “It’s fine. I’m fine.” Only a half truth, but one that she hoped would put the man’s mind to rest.

It hadn’t been enough, from the looks of it. He was lost in his thoughts, if only for a second. Then he spoke, and she realised that it hadn’t been because of her tragic backstory. Phew. She busied herself by stopping short of scarfing down breakfast. She wanted to be polite, but being polite meant sacrificing precious seconds of hot pancake. When he mentions his dream, her eyes light up again. “You make it sound so simple! ‘Oh, you know, I just had a thing in mind and I went for it’. You don’t sound like you’re giving yourself enough credit for that!” You had a goal for your whole life, and you just went out and made it happen! That’s not normal, right? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t know many adults-” or children- “but people say ‘dream job’ because it’s hard and far off, right?” She raised an eyebrow, but only for a second. Her eyes fell to the pancakes as she continued.

“How do you know, anyway? What your dream job is. It’s weird to me, trying to imagine sitting around, doing the same thing for the rest of my life… Maybe I’ve just been out and about for too long. Or maybe I need to get an actual job first. Gonna be honest, I don’t know how this stuff usually works.”
