She noticed the rapid bombardment of metal sound—she whistled to attracted Vlad's attention when the cacophony came to its end. In that moment, the two shared a stare that they equally understood. Their enemy was prepping for an attack. It was time to erase the progress that metal sound had made.[break][break]

“Tricky Dicky?” They would nod in joint agreement.[break][break]

Haze, black and ugly like smoke, would disperse from Vlad's pores.[break][break]

Vlad used Haze! The user has created a haze that eliminates every stat change among all the Pokémon engaged in battle.[break]

It would permeate in the air, slowly obscuring the visibility of the battle field, mixing with the dirt and dust that had been driven up from the endless abuse of air slash.[break][break]

But, it was quiet—no shouts for another attack could be registered.

It was only a thirty percent chance, or so she had been told. It was a gamble, but it was a gamble that could repeatedly be taken. The key-pokemon had some degree of dexterity, but Vlad was no slouch either.[break][break]

When the attack struck, he moved to close the distance.[break][break]

He had speed. Crobats were known to be acrobatic fliers with their quad wings to assist their mobility. However, closing the distance meant that he would have less of a chance to dodge.[break][break]

Which was why he used Quick Guard, taking the brunt of the attack head-on knowing that the barrier would protect him.[break][break]

“Keep it up,” and a shotgun-like effect would take place as he intended to use Air Slash as close to his foe as possible.

She gave a low whistle.[break][break]

Repeating attacks had its drawbacks, though Air Slash was notoriously difficult to dodge. The move had a long range, and as the Klefki dodged the bombardment of blades, Bailey chalked that to some degree of skill. It was not easily done.[break][break]

But, it wouldn't stop. When Mirror Shot was fired, it had the disadvantage of being a singular projectile.[break][break]

Vlad would corkscrew out of its radius, letting the attack launch into the pseudo-forest of the gym. From the low flight path, he would coast close to the ground but never letting his wings touch.[break][break]

“Again.”[break][break]

Another Air Slash—this time, it was delivered from an upward angle. The steel-type would be struck eventually, and when it was, all they had to do was wait for the flinch.[break][break]

Dirt rose from the feverish beating of his wings. Vlad the Crobat would have the endurance to maintain this mad, unrelenting assault.

The mirror shot failed.[break][break]

Crobat corrected his flight path, raising Quick Guard against the bright, metal blast--a film-like construct rising up to absorb the damage that the attack could have delivered. He performed this action without Bailey's intervention—his trainer crossing her arms as she knew what battle laid before them. [break][break]

Vlad could make his own split second decisions, and she knew that the effects of Metal Sound lingered in both of their minds.[break][break]

This was happening because she had deployed her next pokemon and let the Gym Leader hesitate. She should have demanded to see the next pokemon before switching out Bumbo, but Bailey supposed that was her fault for extending that courtesy.[break][break]

She would not extend it again.[break][break]

“Air Slash.”[break][break]

She had outlasted a Guzzlord. This was not a wise game to play.

Part of being a trainer was feeling out a strategy through trial and error. When the Crafty Sheild appeared, it only confirmed that some adjustments would have to be made...[break][break]

And that this entire battle was going to be a complete waste of time. An actual time sink. Two metapods using harden would be more enjoyable than what she would have to do.[break][break]

“...Air Slash.” ALEXANDER STONE treatment. If confuse ray could not be easily achieved, then there were ways to guarantee that it would connect.[break][break]

The Crobat would transition from one attack into the next, using the friction from the beat of his wings to deploy the thin, knife-like slashes that were intended to strike the steel foe.[break][break]

Crobat used Air Slash!

It was not the damage that mattered, but the chance to flinch.[break][break]

Cooper would hold her stance, letting her head tilt as she wondered how this was productive—any moron could wiggle out of this, even if swapping was unavailable to them—but, why? To test patience? Yeah, probably.

Vicky kept her pattern erratic, utilizing a tactic that her species of pokemon was known for. She had already started to prepare her next attack, letting electricity gather between the gaps of her mandibles. The energy would arc, crackle, and make itself visible in the air as she prepared for another strike.[break][break]

“Wait for it...” and Bailey caught on to her spastic pokemon's plan.[break][break]

When the hydro pump was launched, it created the proper channel for the attack to follow.[break][break]

Vikavolt used Zap Cannon![break]

The hydro pump would hit its mark, but not before the bug would unleash her attack—she could survive another strike from the Blastoise, but could it continue fighting after taking one of hers?

Solar-like. That was how Bailey Cooper could describe the wings of these fire-moths that danced in the scene before her.[break][break]

Soft flutterings. Soft, wool-like coverings. She could see why people could become enamored with these pokemon. Their mere presence was enough to make her pause—make her keenly aware of her own breathing as she took a small step forward.[break][break]

It was easy to be drawn to them.[break][break]

Her hand sought an empty pokeball capsule, giving it a small toss and wondering if it would yield a reward.[break][break]

It was nice to see the enthusiasm. It was better than the opposite. People were still scared after what had happened; but, not Bailey. Not after snatching victory from the throes of defeat—not when she had sunk so much blood and so much emotion into a battle that still left her aching.[break][break]

Yearning. The brand on her chest had filled an emptiness that had always followed her. It had felt right. For once, it had felt like she had found what she had always been missing.[break][break]

Now, it was gone; she was left to tend to the mess it had left behind.[break][break]

“But, yeah. I did. Fought it to the bitter end,” and she remembered standing in the middle of that ruined street as the world seemed ready to decay all around her—consumed with flame and sand as her Steelix loomed behind her. [break][break]

“Saved the city... or, what was left,” her tone lost its conviction, head in her hand, as she watched the egg and wondered what dwelt inside.

“You're right,” and the memories of Mossdeep burn fresh from the gym leader's comment. This? This was... a time sink. An outlet. This was just a way to try and burn what had already been burnt onto her chest.[break][break]

The metal sound registered to their ears, causing the Crobat to scowl as the shrill sound bombarded his senses. Its effects would be felt, but Bailey would whistle to draw her poison pokemon's attention. [break][break]

“Give 'em the business, Vlad,” the bad business.[break][break]

She was no rookie. She would not want to waste time on a bad match up—but the rules of the gym registered in her mind, forcing her to refrain from reaching for Crobat's capsule. They would just have to use different tactics to get the job done.[break][break]

The Crobat would have no effective moves against the Klefki, but neither would they.[break][break]

Bailey chewed through his rant, occasionally shoveling another mouthful of fries into her mouth. It was uncouth of her to eat while he was speaking, but she'd be damned if she let her food go cold.[break][break]

Trying to use poison on a steel-type pokemon? And people called her a dumbass. “Oof, that's a rookie mistake,” and the sergeant would wash down the food with a heavy gulp of her drink. The man was not wrong—there was always going to be more bad trainers than good.[break][break]

But, she would not let him dismiss her entire region so easily.[break][break]

“You know...” she would let her voice trail, “if you wanted to get your ass beat so badly, you could have just asked.”[break][break]

Her violet gaze would raise from the basket of french fries, wanting to see his reaction.

Bailey snickered at the silence, feeling more than pleased to see the mighty Fernando Silph speechless.[break][break]

Another drink. There's not enough time to humor the thought of slowing down, because her hand had already sought the glass and brought it to her lips. “People don't practice,” and she would sip, not chug, just to taste the fizzle. “They get complacent—oh, guess my pokemon is fully evolved. Now he can sit around the house and do nothing.”[break][break]

Back to the fries. She would stab and take another big bite, shoving the Golden Chick order his way with a sway of the wrist—the alcohol that fizzed in her system was starting to take its toll. In a haze, it was hard to remember all the things that kept her in such a sour mood.[break][break]

It was like a knife had slid between her ribs, breaking through a hard, rocky exterior. “Better jump at this opportunity before you miss out.”

“You're only supposed to that with fire-type pokemon! We're not trying to make hard-boiled eggs!” She pointed at the blue sheen of the pokemon egg, “Does that look like a fire egg to you? I can't think of a single blue fire-type pokemon,” but that would not be a surprise to anyone that overheard this conversation.[break][break]

Also, sitting on an egg? Her eyes would dart to the Sceptile, catching its reaction. Ah, so the lucky grass-type pokemon had not been crushed by the man's girth. Good to know, because Mateo looked like he worked out.[break][break]

Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to get crushed by him—she coughed, wondering where that invasive thought had come from.[break][break]

“Riiiiiiight, listen, I'm not gonna get my buns toasty just for a pokemon. Sand'll do just fine,” because it was the lazy solution. Ironically, it was also the safest. The Sergeant would fall onto her ass, no longer bothering to balance herself on the pads of her feet.[break][break]

They were going to be here for awhile.[break][break]

His comment would attract her lazy ire—a dead stare that expressed her displeasure. She could respect the honesty, but not the delivery. “You know, I still got one good arm to smack you with,” and she wondered how it was possible for someone to be so dense.[break][break]

“I broke my arm in Mossdeep.”
