[attr="class","spiral"]The Hoenn region was unstable, rotting in the foundation, being slowly but surely eaten away at by the termites of Team Rocket (herself included), but it had one thing going for it: The weather was astounding. Even given the strange shifts in the climate the heat was just right out on the water. Evangeline started the day in Pacifidlog Town, purely on a visit for once, but had slowly drifted away from the town since.

She'd decided to sunbathe, but with the unconventional makeup of the town there wasn't anywhere to do it. In the end she opted to make her own space and simply sprawl out over the top of her Tentacruel. It was the most useful it had been since evolving. Its skin was cool and soft, and with no internal skeleton it had this nice give to it almost like a mattress. Within an hour she'd accidentally fallen asleep, and when she woke up the town was a spec in the distance.

"Ah, were you just doing what you wanted while I was out?" she questioned, sitting up and stretching, "Don't sweat it, I'm not upset." she went on plainly when she saw the nervous way her Tentacruel was glancing at her.

In fact she didn't even ask the Pokemon to take her back to town. She just sat up, pulled her swimsuit back into place, and threw her sunhat on over her hair. It was likely she'd already burned a little (or a lot) but if she could salvage her face at all it was worth it.

wizened city streets
POSTED ON Sept 9, 2020 0:06:57 GMT

[attr="class","spiral"]There's something electric about Slateport once the sun starts setting. Like slowly dimming the lights in a theatre, it fills the air with anticipation. The city itself seems to know about the shift about to take place as people scurry home. As some lights go out, as some flip on, as sights and smells are interchanged. As doors once closed open up.

At least that's how Evangeline feels every time she walks through the streets at sunset. She watches the sun slowly drop from its peak, to behind the buildings' rooftops, to the skyline, and finally to dip beneath it. It's barely peeking out (like an overeager child gone too deep into the river, struggling just to be seen) as she nears one of those aforementioned doors. The sky is mostly black -- stars snuffed out by smog -- with only the faintest splash of reds and yellows and purples at the edge of the world.

The night market is springing to life as the day dies and like always a quiet part of her marvels at the way the place transforms. The scent of sweet meats hits her nose as she adjusts her clothes once more -- makes sure her hair is all tucked into her cap, that her scarf is tickling the underside of her nose, and that her sunglasses are properly in place. She tugs at her sweater and jeans one more time before making a proper entry. Not that it matters. She's one of dozens beginning to trickle into the street.

Though she's just about the only one who winds up at an out-of-the-way stall.

"Business booming as always Eli?" she asks playfully from behind her scarf, her tone brighter than her mood out of habit.

feeling dreary [solo wild]
POSTED ON Sept 9, 2020 0:04:17 GMT

[attr="class","spiral"]It's childish, but after kicking her legs in the water once Evangeline can't help but do it a few more times. It's very baseline stimulation but it is stimulation. She swings her legs thoughtlessly for at least a minute before she finds a reason to stop. A rather insistent reason at that. On one of her kicks she hits something soft and a moment later she feels a familiar pain shoot up her leg.

"Ah! Fuck! Tentacool!" she's not unhappy as she pulls her already swelling left leg from the water, but she would have appreciated a heads up. Tentacool stings are far from the worst pain or the worst poison but the shock of a sudden one can cause additional ones and that can become troublesome. She's ready to scold her Pokemon when it surfaces not anywhere near her, but a few feet out in the water. She had been trailing the unconscious Lombre. Well then what . . .?

The other Tentacool makes itself known a moment later, surfacing and scowling at her from the water. Its tentacles themselves surface a second later. It's got fiendish designs no doubt -- intentions to sting and attack her more. But it doesn't know Evangeline. Far from worrying about any of that she sticks a hand out and grabs the tentacle. Instantly she feels a sharp sting in the palm of her hand. Sharp, burning pain that radiates down her arm in an instant. She doesn't flinch.

"Come here then!" she shouts before yanking it out of the water. It flings through the air, tracing its arc with water droplets. Panicking it lashes out a couple more times. She catches a sting to her bicep and another to her cheek. Managing the swelling later is going to be annoying, but again Evangeline hardly registers the hits. Instead she hobbles upright to look down on her now beached assailant.

"Ushually I hate doubling up, but you've got shome shpirit," she praises the Tentacool as her cheek swells, "You're comin' witsh me." She tosses a pokeball lazily from her bag onto the poor, gasping thing. Its reward for giving her something to do. She returns her Tentacool from the water and begins limping her way back into Dewford Town. Surely even a backwater island has a clinic.

[attr="class","spiral"]"No pushover", that's praise Evangeline could get behind. Even if she was only responsible for about half of what was going on in the moment. Toxicroak was the one refusing to be pushed back. Even as the Garchomp's scales sliced her knuckles and sheared the surface skin off her fingers she kept up the aggression. On her own it might have been suicide, but thankfully Weezing's Sludge Bomb support was enough to keep the Garchomp from properly responding beyond the odd swing of its claws.

Still, it wasn't buckling enough. Even Evangeline could see that. It came off as more annoyed than properly battered and with each successive swing and volley it seemed to better understand what was happening. All it would take is one good dodge and a well placed ground-type move to completely shatter this cobbled together pressure. What she'd do after that she wasn't sure. Toxicroak and Weezing were the strongest Pokemon she had on her.

An answer for that question became more pressing by the second, but just when Evangeline was worried the Garchomp had cracked the code for their offensive an unfamiliar whirring sound caught her ear. A top, trailed by some odd light entered the fight and slipped nimbly between Toxicroak and the Garchomp. A few moments later and the dragon-type seemed placated. Evangeline got Weezing to stop and Toxicroak to come back to her, unsure about what just happened but grateful for its timeliness.

"He's speaking too highly of me," she croaked out in response to the man's continued praise, "I don't think I could have --" she stopped and put her right hand to her throat before coughing a few times. A theatrical ploy, and a chance to reset an expression she could tell was still too tense. After the cough she looked back with a bashful smile before quickly scrawling some words in the notepad she'd been gifted.

I was barely holding on

She flipped the page, furrowing her brows in an attempt to look concerned but still smiling graciously.

Thank you so much for saving us <3

[attr="class","spiral"]Tentacool bobs in the water for a moment, considering Evangeline's request. Her Pokemon are usually pretty quick to respond to an order but the options here are a bit much for Tentacool to process. It's a good thing then that the wild has a way of making these choices for you. A passing lilypad suddenly dips beneath the water's surface, and a moment later Tentacool vanishes too.

"I said do something interesting, not leave!" Evangeline shouts over the water, hands balling up into sand-filled fists for a moment before Tentacool resurfaces with a fresh wound under her eye. She hadn't run, she'd been pulled under. A Lombre surfaced not long after. Her assailant, looking a bit sickly. It had attempted to yank the Tentacool down and do some damage with a biting Giga Drain but got a mouthful of Liquid Ooze instead.

"Oh, well this is fine then," Evangeline changes her tune instantly, even offering the Tentacool a pat on the head as she floats within arm's reach, "Let's deal with it then. If I remember right it's part grass type? I mean it's got a plant on its head, that sounds right. Then armor up and get in there! Acid Armor and Poison Jab, go!"

She goes from patting Tentacool to slapping the back of her head, propelling her forward into the water. This time there's no choices to be made, and so the Pokemon acts quickly. Her Liquid Ooze pulses out from the thin membrane on her head and coats her body, and the moment she's in range she swings her tentacles around to deliver two sharp strikes to the Lombre's face. Super-effective Poison Jabs that leave it reeling. If it looked sickly before it was really suffering now -- purple in the face and struggling to stay conscious.

It attempts one more attack, a Zen Headbutt. It collides with a still forward-floating Tentacool but without much impact. Acid Armor and exhaustion together prove too much. And then it just . . . floats away. Its multiple infections from the ooze and poison in its system are just too much. Evangeline huffs and kicks her legs. That hardly killed any time at all.

[attr="class","spiral"]The Garchomp was quicker to respond than Evangeline expected. Most of the wild Pokemon she'd tried this trick on were too busy choking on the Poison Gas to do much in the way of reacting to the second assailant, but the Garchomp barely let the fumes bother it. Toxicroak was only just in position when the Dragon Claw came crashing down. Too much forward momentum made retreat impossible, so she did the next best thing and threw her arms up to take the hit. An angry croak was her only response as her wrists were left bleeding from the blow.

Meanwhile her partner was being surprisingly helpful. His admiration for her clouded his understanding of her skills, but thankfully he threw her some advice anyway -- she definitely didn't know the Garchomp's ability. Certainly not from a glance through a purple-tinted haze. Unfortunately she couldn't put the advice to use. Toxicroak was barely following orders in the first place, she wasn't going to wait for an okay to strike back. She wanted Revenge. Heedless to the shredding skin of her opponent she swung a fist hard at its stomach.

"C'mon . . ." Evangeline groaned out of the corner of her mouth, wishing desperately her little lie wasn't preventing her from shouting, "Weezing, go help her out with some covering fire."

Her other Pokemon was much more patient, and much quicker to follow orders. She swayed back and forth for a moment, sizing up the distance between them, before cycling her poisons and spitting a volley of Sludge Bombs at the opponent.

[attr="class","spiral"]A stop in Dewford on the way back to Slateport is routine at this point, but Evangeline still finds herself childishly sulking every time they have to do it. The island is boring. Home to a town that barely qualifies as small and a musclehead gym and practically nothing else besides a cave; and she can't see what anyone above the age of 10 would find interesting about a cave. So she always winds up having to entertain herself for the time between ships -- which today happens to be quite long.

About fifteen minutes ago she found this little bit of shoreline beyond the cave, and set up camp there with her feet in the water. She'd love to jump in for a little bit, but unfortunately she lacks the clothing for it. Her cutoffs would be ruined and her tank-top would go see-through and neither of those look good on a tabloid cover. So she has to settle for wetting her legs a little. Fun.

"Can't you find something interesting to kill time with?" the question she asks is pointed at her Tentacool, who pokes her head out from the water at the sound of her voice, "Wrangle a Magikarp, sting my legs, fucking anything to break up this monotony."

[attr="class","spiral"]This stranger's response to her message was so theatrical it . . . well, it wasn't enviable, but it was certainly something. Again the way the man carried himself left her completely baffled. Weeping so openly over so little, if he were actually acting in a class the professor would be stopping the scene. For the first time in recent memory Evangeline found herself completely at a loss as to how to respond.

What was a person supposed to do in this position? She was sure even someone with a sense of empathy much stronger than her own would be uncertain. She didn't want to comfort him, it seemed too genuine a response for so ridiculous a situation, but it felt like just standing there wasn't much better.

As he began to ramble about being married to his work she just stared down at the blank notepad page she had open. Now she was starting to get a little irritated -- the thought she'd ever pursue this idiot was almost insulting -- but even that couldn't overwhelm the pure absurdity of her situation.

She found herself genuinely thankful when a Garchomp came roaring onto the scene.

Normally in this situation she'd play up her helplessness for a bit, maybe actually let the man in front of her handle the battle, but she was so desperate to escape this awful atmosphere and dynamic her partner established that she let herself leap into action -- ignoring the man's bluster and blunders.

She reached into the fanny pack hanging from her waist and plucked out two Pokeballs. One toss and they both released their inhabitants. To one side, Weezing, to the other (seeing her again made her side ache and her face burn) Toxicroak. She was fairly sure the one method of attack she'd been working on would work here.

"Weezing, Poison Gas the Garchomp. Toxicroak, get in there," she spoke for the first time since leaving Fallarbor, but made sure it was in as convincing a hoarse whisper as she could manage. Weezing sprang into action, inflating and deflating as she cycled the fumes in her heads before spewing Poison Gas in the direction of the Garchomp. Toxicroak glared back at her, as if thinking better of following orders, but proved surprisingly obedient -- rushing boldly towards the enemy in the cover the noxious gas offered.

[attr="class","spiral"]Evangeline is . . . angry. After throwing the Applin and watching it scurry away after just a scratch she's angry. She doesn't always know how she feels or why she feels it but this feeling is familiar. The tension in her neck and face, the heat in her chest, the twist in her stomach. She doesn't know how much more time she has in this forest and she's filthy with dirt and her hand is sticky with juice and there isn't a single damn bug to be found.

As quickly as she recognizes this building feeling she starts trying to pull it back in. It won't do to freak out here, she's already screamed once and if no one's responding to it already they're sure to respond to another. There's no more Applin to harass either. So she balls her hands into fists and starts running through mental exercises. Breath, slowly, in, out. Two more times. One more time. Good. Now count backwards from ten . . . pretty quickly she manages to calm down. Sure, her palms are cut and bleeding when she relaxes her fists but that's easy to explain.

"Stunky, come one, we don't have --" she means to finish the sentence with "much time" but loses the words to the sight behind her. Where she expects to only see one Pokemon she finds two, and the second sets her heart to beating painfully hard and fast. She expected to only find bug types here, expected the most exciting thing to be a Spinarak bite; but in front of her defensive, snarling Stunky is a work of art. A Toxicroak. Her eyes naturally trail down its arms, to its hands, to the bright red stingers jutting beyond its fingers.

"Change of plan, Stunky, Night Slash," she once again finds herself whispering orders, but this time not out of repressed rage. Again Stunky's ears wiggle before she leaps into action. This match isn't even but that's okay. She's not hoping to beat the thing unconscious, she has a plan.

As Stunky rushes in the Toxicroak responds as expected, hopping back to try and avoid the little Pokemon's onslaught. It almost works, the Toxicroak is only scratched by the first slash, but the second comes after a quick leap and leaves a red gash across its chest. Retaliation is quick and unforgiving. Now well within the Toxicroak's range, Stunky can do nothing but accept the Revenge that finds her. This is the moment Evangeline was waiting for. Stunky pops into the air, and as she begins to come back down Evangeline shouts --

"Explosion!"

Without hesitation Stunky obeys. Its whole body glows, first faintly and then blindingly, before BOOM! All of its stored energy is released at once, shaking the trees and knocking the Toxicroak flat to the ground. Stunky falls limp off to its side, the Toxicroak struggles in an attempt to get at least onto its hands and knees.

While it struggles Evangeline approaches with barely contained glee. Practically skips to her fainted Stunky, returning her like the formality it is. She saves her real attention for the prize before her. It regards her with all the hostility expected, and more importantly all the hostility desired. It's tired now, much less dangerous in terms of strength, but it can still do the one thing she's been looking for.

"Hey, you, sting me," she commands as she draws closer than any reasonable person would, "Just a quick jab." She lowers herself to her knees beside it, only a foot or so away as it finally manages to get onto all fours. It croaks angrily. She didn't need to command it, it responds as soon as she's in range. It moves faster than she expected. Before she quite realizes it she's got a stinger in her side. The pain is instant.

It's like boiling water under her skin, in an instant her whole side ignites and she's floored. Fuck! That hurts! She feels tears begin to drip silently down her cheeks as she carefully feels around the wound with quivering fingers. She can still move fine so it's not paralytic. The wound isn't deep, to be expected from the exhausted Pokemon. But god it hurts! She can't hold back this scream when it hits.

"D-damn, that's r-r-really something," she grits out as she reaches to her other side for the pouch of her shoulder bag. There's only two things in it. Evangeline knew going into this she might not have the clarity of mind to search and sort through things. She takes one item with her right hand, a small bag, and rips the bottom of it with her teeth. The herbs hit her mouth and she instantly begins chewing. She swallows mouthful after mouthful of saliva as she takes the other object with her left hand and chucks it. A Pokeball. It connects with the Toxicroak and it vanishes in a flash of red light.

Then she just lays there. The medicinal herbs should ensure the poisoning isn't fatal, and she's already screamed several times since being stung so the nearby staff must be running to find her. All she has to do now is bask in this pain and wait. She wonders what a longer sting might have been like . . .

[attr="class","spiral"]By the time the man started speaking again she'd schooled her expression and reined herself in enough to put the pad down and make eye contact again. Eye contact, smile, laugh a little at his comment. These were actions she'd had memorized since childhood and she pulled them out perfectly in the face of his weak jape about brain rot and TV's. Oblivious to this man's station in life, she did herself the favor of assuming he was all hot air in the moment.

The man started backpedaling his statement before Evangeline had a chance to put pen to paper and reply. She knew the script for this interaction too. When someone's feeling uneasy, give them a bit of a comfort. She smiled a little harder, waved her hand in an amicable display of deference and mouthed a quick "I get it, I do" -- or at least tried to. She was about halfway through the silent sentence when he tossed the Castform they were supposed to be watching into the air. Thankfully the Pokemon levitated naturally, but she couldn't help being a bit frustrated with the flippancy. Her smile wavered as she tried to change the burgeoning look of irritation into one of mere worry.

Thankfully, even if she hadn't managed the Castform demanded some form of apology upon returning to them -- and got it in short order. And then they were moving again. It was while the man was going on some monologue about her viable excuses and possible intentions that Evangeline realized maybe the pen and paper wasn't so bad. Between the man's rapid shifts in thought and the way he only looked back at her every so often there wasn't a lot of opportunity to use it even if she wanted to. By just waiting a few beats she could avoid "saying" anything for long enough stretches of time as to not be exhausting.

Unfortunately the end of his last statement was a question directly to her, and he turned his eyes to watch her expectantly. She scrambled to remember the relevant parts of what he'd been saying before quickly writing a response.

I admire public servants

She offered the message with a shy, manufactured grin before turning the page and writing again.

I always wondered what it was like
