"No," Ethel repeated emphatically.

Empress loomed in front of her. The huge Mamoswine grumbled, and the sound was like a small tremor. Ethel did not back down.

"No, Empress," Ethel said, "I don't have any more treats for you. I'll buy you some more later, okay?"

The Mamoswine grumbled, but Ethel stood firm. She was familiar with Pokemon, and knew how to deal with them, even when they were acting up and generally being big babies. Empress was usually above stunts like this, but everyone had their moments.

Sure enough, Empress subsided. Ethel smiled and petted her leg. "Good girl."

Ethel landed safely. With a jarring thump, she made it onto the back of the Wailord. Next to her, her Mr. Mime landed, the Freeze-Dry he had prepared proving unnecessary. The Salandit clinging to him slipped off the Mr. Mime's back and hissed in irritation, but clambered back to safety quickly.

Ethel looked up, hoping to see Crescent and Stratus, but was instead greeted by the grisly sight of several people and Pokemon being torn apart by the Jellicent-like aliens, unable to escape their grasping tentacles. Her stomach turned, and she looked away, but not before she ascertained that Crescent and Stratus were all right. And they were. Miraculously unharmed, the Emolga and Lampent swooped down from the deck of the sinking ship and joined the others on the back of the Wailord. "Thank you," she muttered to the Wailord that had probably saved her and her Pokemon.

There were always more enemies, however, and Ethel's attention was soon caught by a fleet of speedboats with Megalopolan forces on them. Remembering her team's previous success in intercepting these naval attacks, she straightened up-- and then figured that it would be best to stay low on the back of the Wailord, with how the water was churning.

"Team, take down those speedboats," she directed, and her companions were more than willing to comply. Flavor fired off another powerful Dragon Pulse, hoping to strike the somewhat small speedboats, while Crescent did the same with Shadow Ball. Stratus stayed on the back of the Wailord, preparing illusory clones with Double Team that would hopefully come in handy for the action to come. Magic stood protectively back-to-back with Ethel, looking for any threats that would approach the Wailord and blasting them with his still-handy Water Spout.

The ship was sinking.

It must have been a result of the Pokemon that the aliens had commandeered for themselves, poisoning their minds and twisting their wills. It was sick, but an effective method of warfare, if Ethel's guess was right. But she needed to save herself.

She wasn't the only one in a dire situation. She watched as a blonde man and his Corviknight were caught up by the tentacled monsters, among many others, including... oh, dear, that was the captain. She'd have to get off this ship, and fast. She watched as a gust of violent wind freed some from the Nihilego's clutches, but there were still others.

"Stratus, Crescent, help out the Corviknight," she said, her words clipped and hurried. The Emolga screeched at the Nihilego holding the steel avian captive, releasing a jolt of electricity that would hopefully paralyze it. Capitalizing on this, Crescent joined in with a powerful Hex, which would wrack the paralyzed Nihilego's body with greater force if things went well.

Ethel would have liked to help out more, but her own safety was on the line as well. She surveyed the other ship, and was not confident that she would be able to reach it safely. It was a good thing there were alternatives, she thought, reaching the edge of the lurching, sinking ship and preparing to leap.

"Magic," she said to the Mr. Mime who had joined her, "we jump on three. If we miss the Wailord, give us a space to land on." Magic nodded, and Flavor's tongue flicked out from the Salandit's spot clinging to the Mr. Mime's back.

After the countdown, Ethel leaped, hoping to land on the Wailord safely. There was plenty of room for error, with how large the Pokemon was. But just in case the three of them missed, Magic would have a Freeze-Dry ready on his fingertips, to freeze a portion of the tossing sea under them until they could find a better spot to land.

Ethel walked to the area that had been indicated by the League officials. She wore clothing that covered her whole body, as was appropriate for the job she was out to do, and held a gas mask in her hand. The Weezing, she had been told, were all over the place, and extremely trigger-happy. The warehouse wasn't being used at the time, but it was still a danger to a public to have a place that was open being so contaminated with toxic fumes.

Ethel was followed by her Magnezone and her Avalugg, who would hopefully be well-suited to the job in question. Rodent floated around silently with a Magnet Rise, but Titan drew more attention, not due to sound but from his sheer size. The massive ice-type wasn't immune to poison, but he was extremely hardy, and he knew Icy Wind to blow away any poison gas just in case.

It seemed that another person had gotten the League's memo, Ethel observed as she spotted someone else waiting nearby. As she got closer, Ethel noted that this stranger was... extremely attractive.

She shut down the thought the instant it surfaced. She had a job to be doing, damn it. She could flirt later. Or not. She could leave and forget about this immediately. She didn't have time for---

"Hello," Ethel said, and her voice was higher than she would've liked. She cleared her throat. "Are you here for the Weezing?"

It seemed that Rodent would have little trouble finding a rodent to pester. The Magnezone emitted a series of rapid beeps that indicated excitement, swooping over to a metal box that had a Minun climbing it. 

While the Minun was originally startled and probably a little confused, it quickly warmed up to the newcomer. Squeaking happily, the Minun clambered aboard, resting on the Magnezone's huge steel body. However, Stratus, who was already there, did not seem to take kindly to this, chattering and knocking the Minun to the floor with an Acrobatics.

The Minun was understandably startled, chittering angrily after it recovered from the fall. Concentrating, the Minun brought down a huge bolt of electricity from above in what was unmistakably a Thunder, striking Stratus and Rodent directly. Rodent flinched, but shrugged off the attack. Stratus was less happy, screaming in pain and surprise.

Ethel didn't want the situation to get any worse than it already was, so she stepped in. "Hey," she said to the Minun, recalling Stratus. Rodent had recovered from the surprise and drifted closer to the wild Minun. "Sorry about Stratus, he gets grumpy sometimes. You want to join us?"

The Minun squeaked happily and leaped atop Rodent's back once more, and Ethel smiled as she pushed the empty Pokeball's button.

Ethel surveyed New Mauville. She'd heard that the power plant served as a home for many Pokemon, and she was curious to see for herself. It was curious, that such a clearly human-made place would serve as a haven for wild Pokemon. She'd heard that they were often steel or electric types, which made sense, but it was still curious. 

Rodent floated beside her, the huge Magnezone clearly at home in the power plant. She felt a little silly naming it Rodent, but it really did show a great curiosity about rodents. She had caught it floating about chasing Skwovet and Pachirisu constantly, and Stratus had quickly taken to the large steel-type. Maybe there'd be a rodent here that he was interested in, other than Stratus, who was sitting on the huge Magnezone comfortably.

Ethel watched as the plethora of attacks slowly pushed back at the huge tidal wave. Finally, a Skarmory bravely crashed into the tide, and the wave finally seemed to... stop? Ethel was a little relieved as the ship crested the rising waves, but terror filled her once more when she saw the steep fall they were soon in for.

Ethel grabbed a part of the ship that stuck up from the deck. She was no sailor, and wouldn't pretend to know what it was called, but it looked sturdy enough to support her. She looked down at the slope and noted... the terrifying huge aliens that floated there, waiting for them.

With a sick turn in her stomach, she saw one of the aliens controlling the... corpse? Was it dead? of the Skarmory that had sacrificed itself earlier.



She could not allow those things to get a hand on them at all. "Team, whatever you do, blast any of the jellies with all you've got."

Flavor hissed, the familiar purple energy of Dragon Pulse that had devastated an alien ship building up once more between her jaws, ready to launch at any approaching Nihilego. Stratus did not wait as patiently, the little Emolga zipping around and crippling aliens with his Thunder Wave. Crescent the Lampent followed the little electric rodent, floating alongside him and compounding the efforts of Stratus by attacking any who suffered Stratus's paralysis with a glowing purple Hex.

However formidable they may have been, it'd likely be Magic who would deal the most damage to the approaching aliens. With all the glee of a child given a new toy, he wielded the Mimicked Water Spout that he'd so recently acquired, blasting any who got in range with the full force of an attack bolstered by his vitality.
