[break][break] ★ Ethel Irving cuts a striking figure without even trying. She's rather tall, at 5'9", and her angular features and light skin contrast sharply with her tendency to wear dark clothing. Her hair is almost unrealistically long, a blonde waterfall that flows almost to her waist when she leaves it free. However, she usually deals with it by putting it up in a bun, only making her look even taller.[break][break] ✎ Ethel has a very complicated personality. On the outside, she's charismatic and used to dealing with people. She can hide her emotions effectively, speak clearly without stuttering, take command of conversations, shut down unwanted inquiries, and other skills that come with exposure to the public. [break][break] ✎ However, Ethel is a completely different person to those who really get to know her. She's compassionate, extremely honest, and kind to a fault, to the extent that others might see her as a mother figure. She's also unflinching in supporting her views, though she's always willing to listen to others' ideas as well. Ethel can also be extremely sensitive, even if she hides it well. She has a hard time coming to some realizations, especially when they conflict with ideas that she's held for a long time.[break][break] ◑ Ethel was born in Unova, and her mother passed away during childbirth. This left her with her father, who was the leader of a non-profit organization of Pokemon rights activists. She grew up listening to his doctrines, and having it enforced within her that Pokemon were not meant to be used by humans, and that Pokemon training was an abomination. Her father's own Pokemon were an exception, because they were with him willingly. Not captured and enslaved by a Pokeball, but befriended and treated with the utmost respect, as far as she knew.[break][break] ◑ Ethel grew up rather isolated. She was homeschooled and tutored in subjects and skills that her father deemed appropriate, and her social opportunities were extremely limited. However, she did learn to befriend Pokemon, similarly to what she believed her father and his association did. She met many Pokemon in the wild and formerly trained alike, and spending so much time with them, she learned more about them and began to understand them. Pokemon became her greatest friends.[break][break] ◑ When Ethel was deemed ready to be introduced to the public, she was groomed to exactly what her father had in mind. She was a compelling public speaker and an emotional one, who played on the emotions of the audience to persuade them that owning a Pokemon was the highest crime. Despite her limited interaction with people previously, she picked up on publicity like a fish to water. She expounded on her friendships with Pokemon, and reached the hearts of many, becoming the face of the organization her father led. [break][break] ◑ Slowly, Ethel, being an observant person, began to have questions about her seemingly perfect role as the figure who led her father's organization. She noticed that not all of those who were part of the organization strictly followed its tenets, and that even her father sometimes didn't follow exactly what he preached. She noticed that secrets were kept from her, and that people often changed the topic of conversation swiftly around her, especially the organization's higher-ups. At the same time, she began to notice that the public had good points in opposition to the organization's tenets as well, and that many had grievances against them for liberating their partners. [break][break] ◑ Ethel had suspicions that not all was right. However, she did not like to consider the idea of being wrong about something, especially unwilling to believe that her father would (or even could) keep her in the dark for her whole life. [break][break] ◑ Eventually, the organization had caught the eye of the International Police, who said that there were suspicious activities that the organization had endorsed and that investigation would be necessary. Slowly, Ethel's eyes opened as she began to confront the police and other trainers who the organization had wronged, especially one trainer who seemed to be caught up in the trouble consistently but made a good showing for themselves every time. [break][break] ◑ Faced with the inevitable realization that she was on the wrong side of the conflict, Ethel was conflicted. She knew that she should turn back and expose the organization, but turning against something that she had grown up with and learned to love seemed almost like blasphemy. Unsure about herself and her motivations, she fled into hiding as the tensions raised to a breaking point, and soon the organization was no more and her father was gone. [break][break] ◑ Ethel knew that her previous publicity would not be conducive to hiding out in Unova for any long period of time, and that there would be many questions asked if she did show herself again. Unwilling to deal with that pressure, Ethel soon fled to Hoenn as Amelia Fisher, changing her name and dying her hair to hide from her past and her guilt.
