"clear the way!" shouted the masked hero to his braviary who flapped his wings as he defogged the area around them to clear out the blastoise's hydro pump was more than enough to push back the sludge into the drains of the sewers but it could do nothing about the smell that still lingered. despite wearing a full on helmet it somehow still managed to find its way into pokkenger's nostrils and cause him to turn away at the sight of his blastoise cleaning up. "oh man...so glad to know most of that is...pokemon...ugh don't think about it."

cleaning up the sewers of the city was a big job and pokkenger was again happy to help. sure it was just menial labor but every bit of it certainly helps in the long run, he can't be going around fighting bad guys every day. despite popular belief in comic books evil does take a day of rest every once in a while because so far he hasn't heard anything that rocket's been up lately. that didn't mean trouble wasn't everywhere it just wasn't caused by criminals. although in this case the criminals might be the pokemon responsible for leaving this waste behind because arceus to heavens it stank.[break][break]

The stench of this place is making her feel sick. Why was she here in the first place? Ah, right, the mayor had asked for a favour. Erin's first reaction had been to tell her she's not a plumber and to find somebody else. What was her name again? Plumeria or something? She should have taken the plumber's job instead. However, if she wanted to stay on the politician's good side, Erin had no other choice than to accept.

She should have put on a mask, at least, in hindsight. It's too late now to go back for one, so Erin instead instructs her empoleon to surround the two in a bubble that'd keep the stench out. Anyone who happened upon the pair would see a distorted, rainbow-hued version of them. As if looking through stained glass.

There is no problem until she sees a blastoise, a braviary, and a man giving them orders.

"What are you doing?" she shouts at the person responsible. A masked man, no less. Erin has to fight the long sigh that threatens to leave her lips. "There's clearly a blockade. If you keep shoving more waste down the sewers, it will simply flood back."

While Erin's tone throughout her reproach is serious and even demanding, a large portion of it would be lost in the thin layer of the globule.

as the liquid ooze slowly drained into the drains of the sewer pokkenger was feeling pretty good about an easy job well done. however the sudden appearance of a large bubble spouting that he was doing the job wrong sure did give him a good surprise as he almost jumped back startled at the sight of it. it took a moment but he was able to make out the shapes of a person and a pokemon, despite how blurry they appeared to be.

"oh well...i'm sure we can clear that too. the job was to clean out the sewers so a little bit extra elbow grease wouldn't hurt would it?" he was ready to get as dirty as he needed to be for a job well done after all, not a lot of people would take a job like this after all. "are you here to help i take it? you know you could probably check for any blockage yourself so that we don't re flood this whole place." if they were here to help then they wouldn't mind getting dirty themselves right?[break][break]

Erin doesn't miss the startled reaction. She only wishes she could see it better. After a beat, she orders the empoleon to burst the bubble. She hasn't tried this outside the lab before, but if she's to get such reactions every time she does, she'll think about doing it more often.

The stench fills her nostrils again, and the masked man would be left to decipher whether her scrunched nose is caused by him, by his words or by the odor.

"What else would I be doing here?" she all but snaps at him. If his appearance wasn't enough, she also had to deal with his casuistic philosophy and apparent hero complex.

Already she can tell she won't like him. But her sense of responsibility is stronger. "Let's get out of here first, before we get flooded." The 'we' in her sentence is civil, and her words show none of the reluctance she feels about the man. She eyes the direction of the foul water beneath them, and follows it without further words.

the masked man nodded with teh woman's suggestion about getting out of here and followed her. as they walked he took a moment to look down at the dirty water that sloshed around with the movment of their feet and the smell emitting from it was starting to crowd the small space within his mask. a loud sniff could be heard underneath it. "boy i know poison pokemon are dirty but...didn't think they could leave this big of a mess behind. I think i have...something that can help with the smell at least."

he tossed out another ball that released his alcremie who jumped into kaz's arms as she noticed she was standing in dirty water and shot the hero a look of distrust and heartbreak. "sorry buttermilk, need ya to help get this place smelling nice for us. please?" the creme pokemon took a second to nod in agreement before letting out an aromatic mist that smelled like vanilla that spread throughout the sewers and earned her a pat on the head from the hero. "much better. so any idea how we clear this place out real good? doubt a 'good enough' job will leave this place clean long enough before any other pokemon decide to just come through here and leave their waste." he asked as the woman seemed to have a much better head on her shoulders than him.[break][break]

She may try to hide it, but the sigh of relief that escapes her lips is more telling than any words of gratitude she could offer. "That's helpful," is all she does end up offering, along with a quick glance at the alcremie responsible. Finally, she can breathe.

"We just have to find the source of the blockage and eliminate it, at this point." There is no hesitation in her voice. No fear or doubt or worry about her plans. "For a more permanent solution, I need samples of the chemicals at its root."

For Erin, this problem is as simple as any she'd had to solve with any other job. The only difference is the more... hands-on nature of it.

Looking down to her feet, she notes that her investment in gear is another difference to add to the list. She'd have to trash these brand-new NWT boots after the ordeal.

"copper sulfate..." he let the name roll off his tongue as he tried to remember the item in question. "yeah its a bacteria killer or something right? you got some of that on you or what?" he had read over a few simple textbooks about waste cleaning and the name of the solution had come up once or twice but he wasn't too sure of its properties or if it was even dangerous to just have on hand with them. it would help in this situation.

"so we're gonna spread some of that stuff all around here? is it gonna be safe if we do that?" on paper a surefire and easy way of getting rid of all this sludge was probably the best thing they could do. however dropping chemicals into a sewer sounded like a big super villain idea that he wasn't too sold on it just yet. at least the lady sounded like she knew what she was talking about, so trusting her was probably a good idea. as they walked something came into view, something that managed to overpower his alcremie's nice scent as they got closer and made pokkenger ever more curious as he sprinted ahead to check it out.

"think i found our blockage." sure enough leading to antoher section of a sewer was a pile of sludge and trash that looked like the sleeping body of a garbador and muk mixed together that formed some kind of dam to prevent water from flowing down the other side. "alright..how do we do this the non-messy way?"

While Erin is definitely impressed that the masked man would have heard of the chemical, her intention had never been to test him. She never expected him to know it, but it does make her answer easier knowing that he's at least aware of its uses.

"No, of course not. Copper sulfate is toxic. Contact can lead to corrosion in human skin and eyes, not to mention pokémon." It truly would be dangerous, even if effective, to drop copper sulfate in the sewers of a city. "However, it is a chemical with a variety of uses, thanks to the properties you accurately mentioned, and an example of the solutions that science can find once a sample has been acquired."

Upon reaching the source of the blockage, Erin takes her porygon2 out of its pokéball with clear instructions of where to pick up samples using

telekinesis

"Do you have any psychic-type pokémon? Siri can take care of it, but given the quantity of waste here and the size of the outlet, it'll be slow. Once it's cleared up, you can continue your hydro pumping."

"actually i do!" releasing from his belt was a female meowstic who sniffed the air once before raising her hackles at pokkenger for even bringing her into this literal sewer. "ok ok i know this is pretty gross, but can you please help us out here with this waste madame? please?" the hero placed his hands together and pleaded with his meowstic who just let out a deep sigh and turned towards the pile of gunk and let her psychic energies tear it apart.

bit by bit it was broken apart to let it flow down the drains much easier while his blastoise was blasting a weakened hydro pump to make it even more mushier and push it down with force. "that out to do it. doesn't seem too hard but theres just...a lot of it." the hero looked around them and at the dirty water that they were standing around. "gonna need a whole team of a dozen trainers to really clean this place though. should we call for more help cause i feel confident we can finish up the rest."

The name, and later the pleading, make her raise an eyebrow in disbelief. Since when do pokémon have to be begged for help by their owners? Not one of Erin's own would question her orders, even if they might disagree. Ultimately, though, they get the job done. Or partially done. As done as it can be with only two pokémon at it.

When the man suggests to call for help, Erin nods. "I've picked up what I came here for already," she reasons. With that out of the way, she doesn't really need to stay to see things through when there is cheap labor available. "Besides, aren't you suffocating under that mask? Why are you wearing that mask anyway?"

She may not be able to judge, given that she was inside a literal bubble, in its own difficulting identification. She supposes she's just curious.

as his pokemon continued to clean up the blockage he was asked the all important question by the woman. why the mask? indeed why did one such as pokkenger wear the mask. was it a symbol to the people? a protective layer on his face against all the evil in the world? was it just that super stylish? no it was none of that, it was because;

"well a hero has to keep their identity a secret y'know. can't have villains figure out who i am and try to hurt my loved ones." not that he doubted the people he did love couldn't hold their own. he just didn't want to paint even more targets on their back via himself. "its basic hero practice one-oh-one y'know. of course there's nothing saying a hero has to wear one...i just sort of liked the look of it when i made it." that last sentence was full of pride in himself and his creation that not even the horrid smell now coming off of his pokemon was enough to get him as it seeped into his mask. now that she mentioned suffocating...

"...oh my god. i forgot to put air holes in this thing!" he was indeed starting to suffocate under the smell of the waste and turned around and ran off gagging as he tried to remove his helmet out of sight from the lady. "go on ahead! job well done, oh sweet arceus someone get me an air freshener to swallow!" were the last words of pokkenger as he vanished into the shadows of the sewers while his pokemon gave the woman a shrug of the shoulders and chased after him after finishing up.

Just as she feared; a righteous hero wannabe with the typical hero wannabe speech. Erin doesn't really listen to about half of it, her focus regained only when he admits to having made the mask himself. Not surprising, actually. Costume shops probably don't make masks his size. Then again, some adults out there must be into this sort of superhero roleplay. "I must have missed the class memo." Such inclinations are not for her to judge, at any rate.

Perhaps she shouldn't have mentioned it. Would he even have noticed it, if not for her comment? Realization dawns on him and, before she knows it, he's running back the way they arrived. Erin only has a chuckle to offer to the empty air.
