lombre dragged herself from the water, her flesh stinging and irritated from its heat. her energy had successfully been sapped from her, the pokemon's movements noticeably stiff as she just barely managed to return to the stone circle.

"lom-bre."

she appeared terribly pained, but still she managed to return to her feet. the pokemon swayed, and the rain dance was renewed.

"l-lom."

an energy pulsated from her and spread , the dampening effect of water sport saturating the entirety of the gym's interior. this occurred within the span of a few seconds, and it left her utterly winded as she struggled to remain in a mostly upright position upon trembling limbs.

by the time the lombre escapes the water charizard has returned to the skies. the HYDRO PUMP from before is bound to leave a bruise but it's far from enough to render the pokemon unconscious. it's rare for trainer pokemon to be handled by a single blow, much less sliced in half. but, with all things, there are always exceptions.

the pokemon uses WATER SPORT. it only takes a few seconds but that leaves her vulnerable. the stiffness of her movements are noticed and the charizard rears its head for another flurry of blows. DRAGON RAGE is the selected default and the blue flames rain down.

fernando had warned her - there's no mercy to be had in battle.

lombre collapsed, the flames having dissipated to reveal the crumpled figure of the dual-type. cait winced at the sight of her beloved pokemon, the expression she wore slightly pinched before it settled back into a slight, albeit forced, smile.

"you tried your best, girl."

her sceptile promptly entered the field to gather up the felled pokemon before taking leave of it immediately after. cait's gaze swiveled skyward as this was done before she raised her arm and executed a little wave.

"whimsicott!"

whimsicott descended only a moment later, his grin positively radiant as he hovered before his mistress. he didn't appear to at all mind the rain that fell all around them, his waterproof mane barely effected by the downpour.

"whim-sii."

he chortled as he began to gradually ascend, his eyes alight with excitement as he brought a hurricane to life. its area of affect was massive, the rain dance allowing for the sharp winds to stretch far and wide and relentlessly batter whomever had the misfortune of being caught within the storm.

fernando's not sure what to expect from the plush grass type pokemon. when the winds start to take form and batter into a devastating HURRICANE, he's quick to recall his charizard, snatching the pokemon back into its ball, right as the pokemon was starting to be thrown around like an abused kite.

"admirable."

fernando chooses his next pokemon and waits for the wild winds of the HURRICANE to die down before summoning his next pokemon. the abomasnow that comes out roars as a reaction to the steady rain, a SNOW WARNING as the arena grows cold and the water turns to ice. hail starts to buffet the area as the pokemon re-announces its presence.

a BLIZZARD erupts from the pokemon's open maw. the winds from earlier had been harsh and ravenous. the BLIZZARD is a stark contrast. they're fast but concentrated into billowing toward cait's side of the field. the howl of the wind between the snow and ice sings like an unsettling GRASS WHISTLE.

both cait and her whimsicott trembled, the dramatic change in temperature impacting the pair as they visibly struggled against the cold.

"g-gods."

the young woman dipped her head, her expression tight and betraying her discomfort.

"w-whim."

her pokemon drooped mid-air and made for easy pray. the blizzard hit hard, the pokemon almost immediately sent tumbling backwards. the force of the attack was so powerful that the fairy was sent tumbling someplace off the battlefield.

"find h-him. now!"

cait's teeth chattered, though she snapped the order the moment whimsicott fell out of view. several pokemon hurried to obey, moving to retrieve their comrade to tend to his wounds.

the command issues for the abomasnow to stop. due to the nature of the attack, a fierce tool that not only buffets but obscures, the pokemon has no real vision to depict what's happening. it can only make out large movements toward it, not vice versa. the field settles but the temperature remains.

"should we call it an end?"

he almost has the thought to release his riolu, to have it assist by using its aura power to feel out the only unconscious pokemon among them. out of respect, he waits for her expressed permission.

"it's fine."

she sucked in a shaky breath after confirming that all was well, still in the midst of regathering herself while struggling against the cold and her own worry for the fairy.

"they'll find him. the g-gym's large but they'll manage."

she glanced at her companions, the ones whom remained peering back at her in turn.

"who wants to fight?"

it was a question very rarely presented to the group, and they appeared slightly bemused once granted the option to step forward.

"w-well? who?"

an extended period of silence had fell before her granbull lunged over the icy river, just barely managing the task due to her bulk. she stood firmly planted on all fours, a low and rumbling growl originating from the depths of her throat.

'not my first choice,' cait thought, eyeing the fairy. 'but this could work.'

the pokemon lunged forward, galloping upon her powerful legs as her prominent fangs grew hot. she pounced after closing the distance somewhat, intending to bury a fire fang into the abomasnow's flank.

against his better judgement, fernando doesn't push the issue.

"i trust your judgement then, miss alfric."

fernando glances back to his pokemon, commanding.

"resume. battle routine set."

the granbull comes forward. now that's an odd one. like the volcarona, it doesn't fit her grass type motif. while he understands and even expects a variance in type, to allow it to come out for battle is a bit surprising. how interesting.

"execute."

the canine doesn't stop. it continues charging and the abomasnow does little to hinder it's advance. rather, it lets out various vines that dig into the field's floor. the INGRAIN will help keep the pokemon in place while stealing away much needed nutrients to sustain itself.

the abomasnow shows little to no resistance to the attack. the only thing that shows is the white blue aura that manifests around the abomasnow's body. when the FIRE FANG lands, when the pokemon has a firm grasp onto the abomasnow, it retaliates with a SHEER COLD. the lowered temperature from the earlier BLIZZARD allows the pokemon to freeze anything at a rapid rate. the flash of energy manifest into a sharp, instantaneous drop in temperature that expands from a single point outwards.

through the hail cait observed as her pokemon's body grew increasingly stiff, a layer of frost beginning to creep over her pelt as icy tendrils seeped into her thick hide. granbull was being robbed of her warmth at an astonishingly rapid rate, the proud bitch's muscles beginning to lock.

"..."

cait's eyes widened in alarm as the pokemon continued to stubbornly maintain her hold upon the abomasnow. even she swayed where she stood, the terrible cold that permeated the frigid air painful as it filled her lungs. she was forced to take little sips of air through trembling lips as her canine's hold began to fail.

"granbull," she gasped.

cait rushed forward as her pokemon collapsed onto her side in a heap of flesh, fur and frost, and knelt before turning the granbull's heavy head toward her as she began her examination. the canine appeared to be in a state of shock due to sheer cold's raw power, her eyes wide and unblinking as she maintained a dazed expression.

"c'mon, baby girl. you're okay. i'll take care of you."

the fairy's breaths were worryingly shallow, the girl relying upon her medical knowledge to assess just how bad the damage was.

another interruption and fernando finds his will to battle slip away. "halt." the abomasnow doesn't need the order this time, more then apparent when cait physically steps in. still, fernando hold his pokemon accountable by giving it a direct command.

a spare tap of his pokeball brings about one of the few pokemon he's yet to use. it's a miltank straight from ram ranch, a courtesy parting gift from the region's very own cooper armstrong.

"we'll need a HEAL BELL."

like cait, fernando crosses the field to render aid to the frozen pokemon. the miltank follow, her belly jiggling with every step. when they get close enough, the pokemon wags its tail wildly. the repeated chimes resemble the same chirp of a farm bell, providing a warm, alleviating melody that will defrost the abomasnow's freezing ice.

"once we get her warmed up, have your granbull take a MILK DRINK from miltank. that should help nurse her back to health."

his disappointment is hidden by a feign of concern. he doesn't point out the criticism of letting granbull's attack connect. his primary focus in on appealing to cait's emotion - in this case, worry.

her canine's condition begins to rapidly improve primarily due to fernando's timely intervention. and in record time, the canine's stirring and blinking her eyes while beginning to respond to her mistress's voice.

"that attack."

as her hand gently caressed the groggy fairy, she peered up at the man. her distress had already transitioned into awe, the gym leader's eyes round as she blinked dumbly. cait wasn't at all crossed with the man for achieving a decisive victory - no - instead she was impressed.

"i don't think i've ever experienced an ice-type attack on that level before."

perhaps she glimpsed it in some way, shape or form through the media, but she had never seen it unfold before her very eyes.

"granbull's tough," she continued, a bewildered frown tugging at the corners of her lips. "i thought she'd be able to handle a hit or two - but - wow."

"SHEER COLD is hand to land on a distant opponent but it's known to almost always freeze any pokemon caught in it. the fact your granbull is still conscious is impressive in itself."

the miltank continues to ring the bell, enthusiastically letting her tail flail around in a manner that would make shiv blush. fernando reaches out to pat the pokemon. he's not at delicate as cait. his touch is firm but reassuring, a sign of a job well done.

"i take it we should call it from there."

cait nodded her head in agreement before waving toward her loosely gathered pokemon.

"sunny day!"

her sunflora and maractus obeyed the command once it was uttered, blessed warmth saturating the airs as their power exuded a considerable amount of heat within the span of a few minutes.

"looks like you've earned my badge fair and square, sir," she said, grinning.

cait's gardevoir appeared shortly after, the pokemon moving forward to approach the man before opening his curled paw to reveal the item.

"congratulations and i hope the remainder of your day is a truly blessed one."

the sun returns and the battle from before is all but forgotten. the signs of a skirmish, the scorched earth, are the only thing that lingers. the abomasnow is returned and fernando accepts his badge with a humble thanks.

"truly an honor, miss alfric."

fernando leaves her with a light bow.

"i expect great things from you, miss alfric. i can't wait to see how you help hone the next generation of hoenn's trainers. i'll be seeing you soon."
