mossdeep is only a

short boat ride away from her shared apartment in lilycove, but rhian can't help but wonder if her boyfriend will worry about her coming home late today. she checks her pokénav plus one last time. two grey check marks stare back at her. she sighs.

the frown marring her face quickly morphs into an expression of alert when she hears footsteps approach. "miss amavi!" rhian greets, pretty much gasps rather, sliding her phone back into her pocket and standing upright. though this is her first time speaking to the woman, it would be impossible not to recognize one of the league's youngest head scientists in recent years.

"cadet mcarthur here; pleased to meet you," she adds, the scripted lines coming easily to her lips. three pokéballs hang neatly from her belt, as if to show she's ready for the mission. wouldn't do to give her superior a bad first impression, after all... despite having literally zero experience outside of desk and lab tasks.

she's been here since well before sunrise — the call for assistance went out in the early hours in the morning and she was the first to answer. the additional request for a partner came later; persephone lodged it herself when she realised that there is no way she can control the situation alone.

it's not that there is anything glaringly wrong, but the mossdeep scientists were overly concerned, overly paranoid, and the tension in the air started to seep through to her.

she sees the girl arrive in the building's lobby but needs another few minutes to extract herself from conversation with one of the assistant managers (who could swear he heard weird noises in the basement and was convinced someone was tunneling through).

hair swept up in a messy bun, persephone has to make a conscious effort to relax the tension from her face and force a smile. just because she had barely slept due to some misplaced hysteria isn't a reason to scare well-meaning cadets.

"rhian mcarthur — thank you for coming out this morning," her smile turns genuine at the girl's alertness.

"they seem to think someone is infiltrating the facility, so we'll go outside and check the perimeter, alright?" she heads for the door as though expecting rhian to follow, turning to add with a flash of a smile, "first name basis is fine with me."

first thought

that crosses rhian's mind: head scientist amavi is so pretty. this beauty is only exacerbated when she smiles, transcending the already barely perceptible dark circles under her eyes. second thought: she seems so nice.

"yes, ma'am!" the cadet answers eagerly, if with a taste of rising worry. rhian was under the impression this was more of a routine patrol. knowing there could be real, almost guaranteed danger out there, she can't help feeling a little nervous.

it's not that she's scared of the mission, per se. what she absolutely can't let happen is for her to disappoint her superior. knowing her lineup isn't the most combat-oriented, she can only hope the hours spent watching others train comes in helpful.

helpful or not, her hours of vicarious learning would be put to test soon. she follows the head scientist out.

rhian doesn't think she can bring herself to call the head scientist by her first name— not after just meeting her. however, she also can't just ignore her wishes after being dedicated one of the woman's smiles. the only option she's got left is to nod, promising to call her by first name without compromising just yet.

intense sunlight greets them as soon as they cross the space center's doors. under the cover of the night, rhian could see someone trying to sneak in, but during broad daylight? the open space would be sure to give them away. then again, she doesn't think anybody saw the slateport invasion coming, either.

"should we split up or make the rounds together, miss... um, persephone?" a light blush blooms easily across her too-pale face.

it's not often persephone felt old; not with her specific position within the league. if anything, regardless of what title is pinned to her office door, she feels subordinate to her seniors. maybe that's in part what makes this mission so special, even though she can't help but feel a little awkward.

she thinks back to what kind of mentor figure she would have liked at rhian's age, and tries her best to play the part because it's the least she can do. the girl is sweet, pretty, bright to have gotten this far too. rhian doesn't need her to coddle her but the instinct is undeniable.

"let's go together, i just want to be sure that this specific spot behind the building hasn't been breached. one of the scientists is sure he heard noises."

persephone releases her lucario with a barely noticeable flick of the wrist, the pokemon turning to dip his head to both light-haired women, expression somber. it's not that she expects anything to be amiss but having probably her best combatant out is a safety-net.

they walk in silence for several moments, rounding the glass and steel of the space center, and persephone feels a prickle of worry in her chest again. with slateport lost and rumours of rocket mobilising in the rural areas, nowhere could truly be safe. not for anyone, not for someone as delicate as rhian looks.

"do you have much interest in pokemon combat?" persephone asks with a cautious smile, thinking on how to make the query or concern sound genuine and not like a judgement or criticism. "there's a gym i'm thinking of checking out after we're done here."

the gym is closed, but that's not the important part. she only needs an answer to her question.

this feels like

a test. and as soon as persephone releases her lucario, rhian's certain that she's already failed it. not one to give up, though, she procures to think fast: the longer she took to pick her own partner pokémon for the mission, the less cookie points she'd get.

their main objective would be apprehension, she reasons. in that case, brute force isn't necessarily the only route to success.

rhian's hand hovers over the left-most pokéball in her belt, before quickly changing to the one in the middle and releasing the klefki inside. the key ring pokémon may look like an accessory next to her superior's lucario, but he's also the pokémon who offers the most utility options out of her three.

satisfied with her choice, she allows herself time to inspect the area persephone mentioned. she notes the space center's windows are too small for even her to pass through, and her eyes are following the shape of the building when she's asked a question that makes her sweat.

wha- wait, a gym?! rhian's widening eyes wouldn't be easy to miss. "i can't say i'm a huge fan," she starts slowly, gauging the other's reaction before she can commit a fatal mistake. rhian's almost certain this is another test. "but i'd be happy to spectate, if you don't mind. i'm sure i can learn a lot from watching."

in an attempt to elude further questions (she doesn't want to have to admit to hating battles; she knows it's a tricky topic now more than ever), she tries to bring their attention back to the building.

"you're more than welcome to watch." it's a warm but non-committal statement. persephone makes a note to herself to find out the rest of the girl's team and entice her into battling one way or another. it's not really an option these days so much as a safety requirement. usually all someone needs is just a spark.

she'd let her mind wander, so that when rhian spoke again, persephone has to blink herself into the present.

she pauses to look at her, eyes widening and eyebrow arched, but she's intrigued enough to wave at rhian to continue. persephone has always been partial to the small keyring pokemon, her lips curve into a small smile. showing any small amount of initiative is ingratiating enough as it is, but persephone is especially thankful because her only thought included having lucario sense for aural disturbances.

"of course, go ahead."

blessing, rhian turns to issue instructions to her klefki. "remember how you'd distract mom so i could hide at my nono's?" it's a memory from so long ago that rhian herself didn't think she'd remember it. "i want you to do the same. but be careful, this wall isn't ours."

orders received, the klefki approaches the imposing glass walls and produces a light

it's a simple play on physics, really, even if back then she didn't know it. sound can break glass. it's a commonly used trope in fiction, that also happens to be scientifically possible. in order to shatter glass, though, the sound waves must be on the right frequency and bear enough power. anything below that simply resonates through and bounces on any imperfections—any weak spots—on its surface.

the low frequency used would likely be impossible for humans to hear. however, pokémon could hear it. as an added bonus, anyone watching out with plans of infiltrating still would also be lured to the signal.

for a heartbeat, as the girl is directing her pokemon, persephone exchanges a glance with her lucario. he's a steel-type, one who is intimately familiar with the application of metal sound, so persephone looks to him as to whether the technique will receive their joint blessing or not.

the lucario dips his head sideways, uncertain but curious.

it's not that she doesn't trust rhian's assessment, but persephone wants to verify her result regardless. her gaze remains fixed on her lucario as he searches the area with his aura senses.

a flick of his ear in the affirmative confirms the klefki's finding, and persephone turns to face rhian squarely, her smile renewed.

"brilliant thinking. lead the way."

she tries to hide under her long curls—it doesn't work that well, what with them being tied into a pair of too high ponytails. it's an attempt, at least.

"i saw this in class just the other day, so it was still fresh on my mind," she explains, following her klefki's trail.

the bump on the wall is small. rhian would have no doubt ran right past it, if not for the pokémon pointing at the exact spot. it being a bump on a glass wall makes it an odd sight.

in order to bend glass, incredibly high temperatures were needed. in fact, shattering glass would have resulted way easier. so who would have done this?

furrowing her brow, persephone reaches out to run hesitant fingertips along the bump. she bites her lip, mulling it over for a moment before answering slowly as though thinking aloud.

"could be a fire pokemon. the damage is so minor that only a very well trained pokemon could control its fire that way. if anyone entered here, they had spent a good deal of time sealing this back up to hide the breach."

persephone shakes her head, eyes fixed firmly on the bump for a second longer before turning to rhian again, her gaze contemplative.

a spectacled, sleepy looking man, dressed in all black, stares at the two intrusions. his marowak directs its flaming club at the two before twirling it menacingly, the heat from its ethereal flame flashing against their skin each time its gyration reaches close. as the fiery bone spins, the light from the flame also illuminates an alarming "R" on the man's chest.[break][break]

"can't have you two snooping around..." he pulls his glasses up the bridge of his nose.[break][break]

his marowak pounces on them. a purple flame gathers on either end of the bone, its ghostly colour flickering with a dramatic flash before growing in volume as the burning weapon descends upon them: SHADOW BONE.[break][break]

the moment the intruder announced himself, he lost his chance to land a hit. persephone frowns and opens her mouth to reply, but the lucario whirls forward with a swords dance before she can utter a single word.

the pokemon takes the hit from shadow bone for them, maw twisted in a glower. in a single fluid motion, the lucario summons his own fiery bone and strikes back in a copy cat of the attack. deft and agile, the two pokemon don't have to spar for long because the second hit of lucario's shadow bone cracks the marowak's weapon in half. the flames on either end of the bone flicker and die as the two pieces clatter to the ground.

instantly the lucario freezes in place, statuesque and anticipating surrender. the expression on the rocket's face indicates that he is right to expect it.

"don't try to run," persephone warns, her voice foreign even to her. she's emulating someone, but she can't place who it is. "he'll run you down."

it'd be almost comical to watch him try an escape.
