"i think this is the
first time we take the elevator together at work," rhian comments idly as the doors close behind her. not that she can complain, really. she loves being with leo; even a minute longer by his side is a happier minute in her life.

rhian takes a spot opposite him in the box of steel they're riding. she'd really rather stand close to him, maybe hold his hand, but she's also aware that someone could be joining them in the elevator anytime soon, and she obviously doesn't want to trouble him. after all, he was pretty adamant on establishing a rule not to publicize their relationship here as soon as she got the job.

The two had decided early on that they didn't want to attract extra attention from their coworkers, despite living together, by arriving at the same time, taking the elevator at the same time, even eating at the same time. It was suspicious enough that his girlfriend prepared his lunch every morning and put it in containers identical to hers. They really could do without everyone watching said containers side by side. Not to mention its contents.

As much as he loves Rhian and showing off in public, he doesn't want her dealing with gossips within the facility.

Leonardo waits until after the doors have closed shut and the elevator begins it's descent to reply.

"What about that time you begged me to give you a tour around the facility?"

judging from the way he's teasing her, rhian decides that leo must be in good spirits today. she smiles inwardly, making a mental note to ask him about it on their way home. surely, their short descent wouldn't offer enough time to answer such a question, and she doesn't want to make him cut himself short in the middle of an excited narration.

instead, she focuses on his highly aggravating invitation to verbal sparring. "that hardly counts, i wasn't working here yet!" she answers defensively. "besides, those were different times!"

she really doesn't know how he does this, but bantering with leo always makes her feel a little lighter. like nothing is really as bad as she thinks, like life is so much better than fairy tales.

If he were to describe Rhian's face at this exact moment, he'd liken it to a tomato. A baby one, at that. Her face is round and red and very, very squishable. Man, baby tomatoes are great. They should really get some before going home today.

Compared to Rhian's, Leonardo's face is a lot more relaxed. He has a triumphant smile plastered on, knowing full well that his retort won the competition easily. Even if they weren't even competing.

Imagining all the delicious ways they could prepare those baby tomatoes is making him really hungry, so when the elevator suddenly stops he can't help a frustrated growl. The second thought that comes to his mind is that the facility is under attack.

now leo really is making

fun of her. she can see the smirk he's hiding, and doesn't approve of it one bit. "it was a very tall building!" she can already hear him laughing at her again over this. never gonna let her live it down. "stop making fun of us not gifted with your giant genes! jeez," she pouts, not only at the teasing but also at its past and future implications.

"what the—" when the elevator comes to a sudden halt, rhian somehow manages to stumble on her own two feet. at first, she's too busy trying not to fall to her death to try and look at him when she does. then, after all immediate danger has passed, she notices worry on his face.

her own expression morphs into a more serious one. "you don't think..." she gulps down, her hand tightening around leo's arm. rhian wasn't around the first time rocket released a full-on attack on the league, and she hopes with all her heart they aren't experiencing a second one now. they have to get out before whatever caused the elevator to stop gets to them.

thanks to her ongoing studies in mechatronics, rhian knows enough to know the first step to do in a situation like this is to wait for the automatic rescue device to kick in, which would park the elevator next to the closest floor all on its own. she waits.

to add on to the earlier description, the automatic rescue device also seems to not be activating. "you'd think the league's elevators would be equipped with ard," she ends up saying with a sigh.

Ever clumsy Rhian surprises him yet again by tripping over literally nothing. In any other situation, he'd find it funny. Endearing, even. Right now, it only adds to his already growing worry.

"You okay?"

he asks, reaching out to steady her. He feels her grab onto him and squeeze. It makes him pull her closer protectively.

Leonardo admittedly doesn't know much about the ARD that Rhian is talking about, but he can at least infer based on the way she talks about it that the situation doesn't look too bright.

"Nothing we can do, then?"

he asks gently, prompting her to break out of her shell and talk to him, see if they could come to a solution together.

"What do you think of my metagross? Could easily break us open if there isn't anything about the elevator's mechanism I'm missing."

It doesn't sit with him too well to be dumping most of the thinking duty on Rhian, but this is her field. He's willing to trust her and let her have the spotlight.

rhian's left the comfort

of leo's arms and is currently pacing the room, considering their possibilities. under normal conditions, the safest route would have been to sit it out and wait for the elevator to spring back to life. not knowing whether they were under attack or not, on the other hand... no, they couldn't afford to risk it.

"no— actually, yes! if meteoro helps us up, we should be able to reach the next floor without problems," she answers. leo's offer lights up her face. of course. trust leo to come up with the grandest ideas. "from there, we just need to find a way back into the building."

the last part is what worries her the most. one movement in false and the elevator car could very well fall to the very bottom of the building. no, she shakes her head. we'll figure that out once we're there. once she has a good view of all the devices at play, she'd be able to formulate a better plan. at least, she hopes so.

The sign stuck on the elevator's wall suggests a capacity of two and a half thousand pounds. Considering the extra safety measures that the engineers who calculated this value must have taken, Leonardo suspects the real maximum capacity to be a bit higher. Rhian and himself don't pass the quarter thousand, leaving the metagross plenty of room to operate in.

Leonardo nods, convincing himself that it's all going to be all right. He taps on the pokéball's button and the metagross is released.

There is a short moment when time, ironically, feels timeless. Suspended in time, if you will. The elevator juggles due to the force of the metagross' entrance, before it stills again. Science predicts this phenomenon, and so Leonardo expects it, but as any other elevator hanging precarious it's no less terrifying.

He holds his hands out to Rhian to help her climb on top of the metagross. Then, he hops on too, with all the ease of someone who's done this multiple times over the years.

"Ready?"

he asks both of them.

meteoro pushes the lid

up, and each of them makes the climb out of the elevator car with varying degrees of terror. it all could have been much safer if the metagross was small enough to pass through the hole without them having to dismount, of course, but then he probably wouldn't have been able to carry them to begin with.

the floor immediately above them actually isn't far away at all, making the climb a really short one. while meteoro hoists them up, she quickly scans the interior of the elevator for any clues as to what to do. to no avail. "we might really just have to break it open," she finally admits.

now there are two problems with this statement: one, the only one strong and lightweight enough to break the door open is meteoro, the same pokémon that is keeping them steady and alive with its strong arms on each side of the construction. two, his arms are, as one could guess, currently occupied keeping them alive.

rhian looks down at where they came from, and indirectly at the long fall that not being careful would imply. she gulps down. "maybe... maybe magnet rise could make us levitate long enough for meteoro to punch the door open," she suggests tentatively. as soon as she says this, she regrets even bringing it up. "no, forget what i just said. i'm sorry. it's too dangerous."

Rhian's suggestion is.. risky. The metagross had never used magnet rise to levitate at such a high height before. It's unconventional to use it for more than a couple meters, to say the least. This many floors would be unheard of.

Leonardo has to consider their options carefully.

If the League really is under attack, they can't afford to lose any more time. God knows the Rockets wouldn't hesitate to take the entire building and everyone inside down, if it fit in their plans. A repeat of Slateport would be devastating.

On the other hand, Leonardo can't really hear much noise outside. A real assault would surely be louder. Unless, of course, they had already passed through. Despite this being one of the League's strongholds, it was only a research facility full of scientists, not military.

"We're doing it,"

he declares, taking both of Rhian's hands in his for reassurance. There is enough metal around them to create a magnetic field strong enough to keep them up for the few seconds that it would take the metagross to open the door. He believes in his pokémon's ability to pull them through.

okay, things are getting out

of control. she literally just said using magnet rise was too risky. perhaps even riskier than having stayed on the elevator car to begin with. but leo seems to have faith in this plan, for some reason. she really hopes he's not just following her blindly, but then this is leo they're talking about. he always thinks things thoroughly.

she resigns herself to her fate. if she died, at least she'd die next to the one she loves. although, she does wonder which she'd prefer: death by electrocution or falling to her death. no. definitely, she'd prefer a peaceful death from old age.

rhian really doesn't want to die. unfortunately, her determination is renewed after leo has given meteoro the order, and she can only watch in horror— well, no, not exactly. she can't watch their demise so she shuts her eyes and hangs onto leo so tightly she might as well strangle him.
