He's no breeder and neither is his partner. The little town they're sent to is literally the last town anyone would think to look at. He has no time to waste, yet here they are.

Sighing, he rests his hand on either side of his waist. The pangoros they'd have to deal with can already be seen in the distance.

compared to leo's

angry stomps, rhian's steps are light. diminute. like a little mouse following after an angry lion. she's never really seen him angry before— not the way he's angry now. there was one time, back during their school years, when he punched a kid. other than that, in the three years she'd known him, leo had always been more ready to call something dumb and move on than to physically express his anger.

understandably, she doesn't quite know how to deal with a furious leo. it makes her cower a little, to be around a side of leo she doesn't know too well.

"someone needed help and there weren't enough hands, maybe?" she suggests with a small voice, fitting for how small she's feeling at the moment.

her tendency to try to put herself in the shoes of others —her empathy— precedes her. she understands why leo is so angry, she really does. she knows he was working hard on his research when they were called to verdanturf.

on the other hand, she also understands that in these trying times they had to make sacrifices sometimes and help out not where they're good at, but where they're needed. she's sure leo knows this too, deep down. he's simply too blinded by his anger to see it.

leo's negativity

is starting to get to her. the young man's not usually like this, of course, only when something really ruffles his feathers— and, considering there's not much that can have that effect on him, she's mostly had it easy dealing with his temper.

however, on those few occasions when he is angry, rhian's learned that leo can be quite insufferable.

she's still learning how to best approach his fits of anger. until she finds a good solution, the best she can do is apply the good old method of trial and error. slowly but surely.

"hey, leo? remember that football match you mentioned being excited for?" her sing-song voice attempts to distract him from his thoughts as they're guided by the assistant towards the pangoro enclosure.

rhian's only interest in the sport had been back in school when leo was the one playing. she's starting to prepare herself mentally for the torturous boredom of what she's about to say. "guess who's got tickets for it."

not rhian; that much she could tell you now. but she would. if it made leo happy, she'd ask one of her rich relatives for the favor. after all, what was enduring an entire evening with them in exchange for leo's happiness?

little bad about lying to him, even if it is a white lie bound to hurt no one. well, no one but her, if she didn't manage to get her hands on those tickets soon. before she can regret it, though, leo picks her up and sends her squealing at his newfound cheer.

"leo!" she exclaims, reproaching. "we're in public." still, she doesn't let that stop her from smiling from ear to ear.

from the air, rhian managed to see the pangoro enclosure the assistant was so adamant on them checking out. with her not being exactly in the best condition to finish the tour, rhian offers her a smile and a pat on the back. "don't worry, we'll go ahead and check on the pangoros."

rhian had never before seen so many pangoros in a single place. they're cramped, and angry, and unamused with each other.

"aren't pangoros one of those species that really value their privacy and personal space?"

Rhian seems to realize this soon enough because next thing he knows she's already dragging him off to see the pangoros.

She asks him a question, and looks back at him as if he knew all the answers in the world. For a moment, he considers reminding her that he is no biologist and that he's no pangoro enthusiast either. Instead, he settles for a more direct answer.

"Dunno. Look it up online."

While she does, Leonardo closes the rest of the distance left between him and the fence surrounding the enclosure.

Whether they valued their private space or not, the pokémon were way too cramped up together. Leonardo may not know the more technical specifics of breeding, but he's very certain if anything they'd have to separate these into couples if they wanted them mating.

for a second. "there was one case, actually, but it's odd," she begins. arms crossed on her chest, she lets her mind wander. "see, female pangoros have a very long menstrual cycle. the breeding happened around this time of the year, which is when their fertile window begins. i can only assume that's why we were called— the ranch owner was hoping the season would make them mate, but it didn't."

Obviously a fertile window and a more spacious environment wouldn't be everything they needed to procure a successful breeding, otherwise the ranch's personnel would've done that by now. finding a place

for the pangoro couple isn't easy. the problem with space isn't exclusive to the enclosure they were looking at earlier, but to the entire ranch. somehow, the owner had managed to fill the ranch beyond its capacity and they were forced to ask the poor girl, now with the minccino in her arms but a bird's nest as hair, for help temporarily moving the mareep somewhere else.

then, the waiting game begins.

in order to give the pangoros the illusion that they are indeed alone and left to their own devices, they ask to be allowed into the surveillance room instead, where they could watch the events that transpired without being exposed to every detail of it.

the pangoros continue their pattern of marking the territory and rounding each other, but really that's pretty much it. rhian watches them with growing disappointment.

"what do we do now?" she's out of ideas.

another failure

. leo's mention of her hometown manages to bring a smile to her face, but even that isn't enough to cheer her up after even cherub's eggs fail to make the pokémon mate. rhian was feeling pretty good about that impromptu idea of leo's, too. she was so certain that the blissey's eggs could make everything better.

with a sullen face, she says, "guess we're back to artificial insemination, then?"

the task ahead would be much more complicated than their attempts so far. it would require special equipment, time, and a specialized biologist to run smoothly. it would also be their last option.

rhian leaves instructions to the ranch owner's assistant on the equipment needed and promises to find a scientist to refer to them for the project. before leaving, they also offer to help her move all the pokémon back to their original corrals.

although she's not happy with their solution, rhian at least leaves the ranch with the knowledge that both she and her partner really tried.
