it's a little past

noon when she makes it to fallarbor town. the trip itself is comfortable enough, but the waiting time between flights makes rhian wish she'd thought to catch a flying pokémon to help her get around the region. she needs it now more than ever, with her new job taking her literally everywhere for any and every reason imaginable. such are the circumstances of her current struggle with ash-covered mud and grass.

a pair of rain boots get her through a particularly nasty-looking dirt path just outside the town (it's probably not about to rain, but thank arceus she thought to bring them). she glances at her pokémon, a klefki happily levitating by her side, with envy. xerneas saved him the pain of walking or, in this case, dragging feet across ash.

"you sure you don't wanna trade places with me, grandt?"

caught up in her little bubble, she doesn't notice the presence of another person nearby.

surprised look. he and his partner haunter were walking about the town of fallabor. preparing to head out on a personal training regimen. it wasn't until he saw the assistant of professor lucas, Rhian McArthur, that he'd casually call, "ms.mcarthur!" a light wave, he'd smile, "what brings you to fallabor?" arian asked.

while talking to rhian, arian was also making sure to keep an eye out for the pokemon he and his partner were hunting for during their training. "haunter, keep an eye out." arian commanded, his gaze brought back onto rhian. a smile returning from an expression that shifted for but a short second.

everyone she knows, the gym leader is one she'd put in her list of least expected to run into all the way in fallarbor town. used as she is to only ever see him on his visits to the research facility, the encounter comes as a bit of a surprise.

then again, bearing the title of gym leader, she supposes he'd be permanently on the lookout for training spots and new pokémon to add to his team.

she smiles, completely oblivious to the second-long change in his countenance. "mr. coin, what a pleasant surprise."

at the inquiry, rhian tilts her bag in his direction, letting him have a peek at the many test tubes laying in neat rows inside. "i'm here to pick up some samples for an experiment," she explains, before returning to a more comfortable position.

n unexpected run into rhian was not on his list. "you're a busy gal as per usual." the dapper male commented. haunter watched as a heracross and klefki maneuvered about. he knew that it wasn't the catch for today, and thus ignored the pokemon. light conversation continued.

"i'm just on a hunt. there's a rare sighting of a pokemon i'm in search of, sadly i haven't seen it." a light chuckle. he was embarrassed by his inability to pinpoint its location. "whatever you're working on must be pretty important," arian softly smild, "care to share with us what it is?" being in rustboro must have meant that it involved a collection of minerals, right? it's just an assumption of course.

lightly at the compliment. "no such thing as breaks for a researcher. especially for an assistant." far from complaining, rhian's tone reflects pride in her job. she may not be a full-fledged scientist yet, but her work with head scientist lane had allowed her to learn things she wouldn't have been able to otherwise, as only a trainee.

"it must be nothing compared to a gym leader's job, though."

rhian's eyes widen at his admission. if the pokémon he looked for was eluding him, it must be a really rare one indeed.

"i'm afraid i'll bore you. this is really one of the least interesting projects being conducted at the lab. but," she pauses for dramatic effect, one of her fingers held against her lips in an almost conspiratorial look, "it's one i can tell you about, at least."

she gestures to the ground, or rather the ash covering the ground.

"we have reason to believe mt. chimney is turning not only ordinary rock into lava, but also evolutionary stones stuck near its magma chamber. it would be ideal if i can spot any complete evolutionary stones, of course, but the samples i'm looking for are of ash and hardened lava. we want to examine if any properties from the evolutionary stones remain in them."

she hums for a second, wondering if what she's about to propose would be appropriate and, most importantly, helpful. "would you like to team up and help each other out with our respective searches?"

surprised expression, he'd say, "no way! you're joking?" though, he wondered, why was she here if mt. chimney had been the area producing the evolutionary stones? it was a headache trying to figure this all out and connect the dots. the more he tried, the more it went over his head. "i don't get it, but it does sound like something fun; plus, i can't leave a lady like yourself in such a predicament. my brother would pound my head if he found out that i did such a thing." a light chuckle. all was going well until the sudden eruption back in town.

turning around, it would seem as though a lucario and aegislash were combatting against one another. "what the..." they weren't too far from the scenery. but the battle found its way near the towns entrance. "rhian, come with me!" erupting from the palm of his hand was another ball, "seviper, slither your way to lucario and coil yourself around its neck; haunter, shadow ball the aegislash!" on command the duo maneuvered. following the command, aegislash was forced to falter upon the ground. suffering from the shadow ball's assault, whereas seviper coiled its tail around the neck of lucario and began to block his access to oxygen.

"rhian, please assist me with catching the both of them if you will while they're down!" releasing a pokeball from his hand, he'd toss one at lucario; whereas, the other, remained unconscious for the time being. due to having already suffered some damage from its fight with lucario.

lucario had, then, been ensnared. a bright red beam of light absorbing the steel/fighting-type. aegislash slowly began to awaken, "hurry, rhian! haunter, on standby!" he commanded.

technically,

as part of the league, she is obligated to help out when trouble arises. in practice, though, she usually spent her time inside a lab, collaborating to the protection of the region through research. naturally, when trouble actually does arise while on duty, rhian feels equal parts exhilarated and terrified.

she tails after arian as quickly as she can back the way they came from: towards town. "grandt," she calls her klefki. the quarrel is happening way too close to fallarbor, making it a latent threat to the civilians residing in it. with the klefki's

fairy lock

, they could at least make sure the pokémon didn't take their fight too far inside.

by the time rhian catches up, there fortunately isn't much of a fight left. the seviper and haunter already have both wild pokémon under control, and all that's left is to apprehend them. rhian grabs a pokéball from her own supply and tosses it at the already debilitated sword pokémon before it can get up.

the pokéball is still in midair when she notices the doublade slowly awaken. first one blade rises, then the other— "grandt, use draining kiss!" she blurts out the first thing that comes to mind. the klefki hurries to fulfill his trainer's command, managing to weaken the doublade just enough that the pokéball hits.

expectantly, she waits for the outcome of their efforts.

[break][break]

when all was done and things calmed down, she'd tell the gym leader "that was exciting."

sigh, he'd respond, "more like annoying." a gym leader's work was never done. why did his brother have to sign him up for such an annoying duty. extending his hand, he'd ask, "i'll take that aegislash off your hands. i think it'll do well within my gym." once handed to him, he'd ask, "so, about that little project?" he'd give her a smile. "lead the way!"
