cait had estimated that once the primary entrance way to new mauville had been unsealed trainers would make quick work of the wild population that resided here. unfortunately, she had been wrong in this assumption - the creatures whom presently occupied the power plant as persistent as the pyukumuku that plagued their local beaches.

"we've barely made a dent. and i'm starting to understand why now. this place has been serving as a prime breeding ground for some years."

she shook her head in disapproval as they ventured into the depths of new mauville.

"it's a little sad that we have to uproot so many pokemon," she lamented. "but it's honestly for the best."

'hopefully they'll be gone in a few months,' she thought. 'but this place is huge. there's plenty of nooks and crannies we'll have to peek into before we manage it.'

a female pyroar, arcanine and salandit accompanied them as they pressed onward, the unconventional trio having greeted the pair upon entry. cait had assigned the three to maintain constant surveillance on the area, their fitted collars imbued with technology specifically tailored to pick up high quality audio.

"be careful with the hair, salandit. here, let me just hold you."

the little lizard persisted on climbing up his mistress's form before settling upon her shoulders, his tail whipping from side to side as he did so. cait plucked him from the position, deciding to cradle him in her arms before giving his upturned belly a few light scratches.

Stormy was frowning. She wasn't typically the protesting type, she didn't actively go out of her way to put up signs and prevent people from doing things... but this whole situation sort of freaked her out.[break][break]

"Are you sure it's for the best, Cait? I mean, this is your city and you can do what you want with it... but these guys have been living here their whole lives. Isn't this a little bit cruel?"[break][break]

For the better part of the morning, her and Cait had been hard at work driving Magenemite and Probopass and the like out of the depths of the power plant. The wild Pokemon were sapping the energy the city needed to power their new buildings and factories. It made sense why they needed to be cleared, but it broke Stormy's heart all the same.[break][break]

Every once in a while, Flareon and Vulpix would run ahead. The two were mostly playing with each other, not really as focused on the task at hand. Mostly because Cait's three Pokemon were all stoic and dutiful, using their fancy techy collars to help their master. The only Pokemon that remained close to Stormy for protection was Chandelure - and by now that was a habit. The last time she hadn't stayed close to Stormy, her trainer had been seriously hurt.[break][break]

Stormy would look up, noticing the lizard as it crawled up onto Cait's shoulders. She had seen one or two of those things before, but honestly didn't know what it was and hadn't been compelled to catch one. As the woman moved the Salandit to her arms to scratch its belly, Stormy would smile a little bit. [break][break]

"I see you're training a couple of fire types yourself. I'm glad, you used to seem so scared of them before. Arcanine and Pyroar are incredible fire-types."[break][break]

'cruel' was an interesting way to describe this league sanctioned process. and stormy hadn't been entirely wrong for using such a word, because the idea of 'purging' the electric-types and steel-types from their respective nests could only be described as unpleasant if nothing else.

"it's for the best," she repeated, simply.

the change of subject was welcomed, cait's smile returning in full as stormy praised both her arcanine and pyroar.

"thank you," she said. "they're very well-trained."

they had originally been team rocket 'stock', their respective capsules repossessed and given to cait sometime after.the gym leader had eagerly accepted the pair and almost immediately put them to work, pleased that they were both obedient and willing to accept her as their mistress without a fuss or a fight.

"and salandit isn't half-bad, either," she continued. "he's not the strongest but he's pretty smart - and fast."

the pokemon released a noise that vaguely resembled that of a distorted purr or rasp.

"male salandit aren't exactly popular, yes. but i think he's fine as is," cait remarked. "do you have one of your own? i know their female counterparts have quite a bit of fire power."

salandit craned his neck and released a tiny spurt of flame, the look on his face indignant.

"and so do you, scale butt."

cait poked at his belly, the pokemon wriggling dramatically in response.

Cait's response was firm, and even though Stormy couldn't exactly agree with it, she wasn't about to argue.[break][break]

The majority of Stormy's Pokemon had been wild-caught or gifted. Very little of them had been rehabilitated to her. The only one that had, had been Torkoal. A shadow of sadness briefly flashes across her face, but she dismisses it quickly. [break][break]

A small smile leaks from the corners of her lips as she continues to watch her friends Pyroar and Arcanine survey the area. They were incredible, and a small part of her was a little bit envious.[break][break]

Cait brought her attention back to the little lizard in her arms, however. Stormy would glance at it curiously but didn't give it much thought. At least, not until it spurted out a flame following Cait's mention of 'fire power'. [break][break]

"Wait, that thing is a fire-type? What is it?" [break][break]

The woman would immediately hurry to get a closer look, her eyes wide with surprise and curiosity. [break][break]

"I had no idea. I've seen a couple of them now and I didn't think they were fire-types at all. The look a lot more poisonous."[break][break]

Vulpix and Flareon would both charge back towards them, tumbling over themselves at Stormy's feet. She would kneel down to stroke them both, while Chandelure continued to simply watch silently. [break][break]

"he is, actually," she confirmed. "he's a poisoner, too. isn't that right, baby boy?"

they were also prone to possessing poor temperaments, though the females were far more difficult to manage in comparison. cait lucked out when acquiring the male variant, the creature proving himself to be remarkably compliant as well as astonishingly intelligent.

"if you ever happen across one i'd suggest catching it," she encouraged. "they're honestly worth the time and effort to raise."

her pyroar had paused for a moment, her ears twitching as she took stock of her immediate surroundings. it was likely she had heard something that was worthy of her attentions and she'd soon stalk off in a seemingly random direction. cait watched her go but made no move to follow her, confident in the feline's skills.

"how are your pokemon coming along," cait asked, smiling fondly down at the flareon and vulpix. "and how's lavaridge, by the way?"

she couldn't imagine living in such a place, especially since it bordered a volcano. but she could understood why people were drawn to it despite the looming presence of mt. chimney; especially since the ash resulted in a plentiful amount of fertile earth and the hot springs frequently brought in tourists.

"i can't believe i haven't really payed it a visit yet. i'm constantly passing it by when i work."

Stormy would look at Cait quizzically as if she didn't believe her. Except... she did because she had passed on two female Salandits in the past because she trusted they were poison types and not fire. [break][break]

"Huh.. interesting."[break][break]

She glances up at her friend as the woman suggests she catch one. She smiles a little bit, awkwardly. [break][break]

"Yeah, I'll have to keep my eye out."[break][break]

When the Pyroar stalks off, leaving the two girls to their conversation, Stormy's Flareon follows. It almost seems as though the fire-type is mimicking the footsteps of the feline, trying his best to immitate.[break][break]

The six-tailed fox remains behind, however. It's hopped up into Stormy's arms and is nestled securely in the crook of her arm. It's sleeping soundly.[break][break]

"Lavaridge is wonderful. It's so warm, I never have to be worried about the cold. I haven't moved there officially yet though, I'm still in Rustboro most of the time."[break][break]

The truth of it was, she was reluctant to leave the home Alex Stone had given her. [break][break]

"I'm surprised you haven't visited me either, Cait."[break][break]

She pouts, putting on a sad expression to try and guilt Cait into feeling bad.[break][break]

"I mean, I've come to visit you how many times now?"[break][break]

cait moves to lightly bump the young woman with her hip.

"you know how i am," she continued. "i'm an absolute workaholic! it's been that way since day one. and with rocket at our border i can't exactly afford to be missing for too long."

the council had trusted her with the position of of taking over mauville; and with her new home and the taken slateport sharing the route of one hundred and ten she was expected to prevent the unsavory lot from crossing the lengthy land bridge which presently divided them.

"i'll make time," she promised. "rocket doesn't really seem to be doing much nowdays."

despite this she was still constantly plagued with worry. cait was absolutely certain they'd mount an attack; she just wasn't sure when it would occur.

'i just hate the idea of being absent when they need me the most.'

"how's life as a gym leader, by the way? is it everything you'd hope it'd be?"

Stormy laughs as Cait bumps her with her hip. [break][break]

"I know, I know. I just miss my best friend sometimes."[break][break]

Her smile is a little sad, but deep down she understands. Cait is now the leader of Mauville city, and with that comes a great deal of responsibility. She is no longer the carefree young woman she had met in the middle of Fortree forest, out hunting for Budew leaves to cure the sick. [break][break]

Of course, she's still out helping people the same way she had when they'd first met... but it felt different. She felt a lot more distant and harder to talk to.[break][break]

"Don't jinx it, Cait! I'm sure they're just plotting something big. We can't rest, even if I want to."[break][break]

In a way, Cait has made her feel a little bit guilty. She's been so hard at work rebuilding and strengthening Mauville, whereas Stormy has been distracted and aloof in Lavaridge. Granted, the woman has been hard at work, but not nearly as dedicated to her career change as Cait has been.[break][break]

At the mention of her own position, Stormy would glance at Cait.[break][break]

"It's great, honestly! Unfortunately I've been busy with missions and helping the League to really put my foot down in Lavaridge.. but it's been great to stretch my legs out there. I know you're not a fan of the heat and ash, but it's so breathtakingly beautiful out there."[break][break]

cait arched a brow at the mention of 'heat' and 'ash'.

'what a terrible combination. i don't know how stormy does it.'

"last time i was there i got ash all over my clothes. and i washed my hair thrice times over 'cause it got all frizzy."

she absently ran her fingers through her mass of green curls, a hint of a frown tugging at the corners of her lips.

"but i guess the spa'll make it all worth it. i've been seriously needing to relax."

it was strange how she felt more her age when she was around stormy. she wasn't really a 'gym leader' and a 'lieutenant' anymore; she was just cait alfric - a twenty year old woman who enjoyed hanging out with her friends.

"hey, scaly butt, get to work. i'm not going to taxi you around this whole time."

the salandit released a petulant little hiss in reaction before reluctantly removing himself from her arms to begin his search of concealed nests.

"enjoy you're time away from lavaridge," cait urged. "if - arceus forbid - something were to happen to mauville they'll likely be at your doorstep next."

For the most part, the compound they were exploring was quiet, the only indication anything was happening to come as a result of power flickers or surges due to a scuffle between Pokemon. Otherwise, it was relatively straightforward and easy. [break][break]
