Leilani was born and raised in Fortree, Hoenn to two wholesome people; her mother was a holistic doctor and her father a well-known carpenter around the city. Her parents raised her well, teaching her to respect and honor what nature provided for her. Her love for her land tend to cause her to sneak off in the surrounding routes; cleaning up the rivers from the pollution of nearby industrial areas, replanting herbs that her mother used, or even helping whatever pokemon that was effected by the hazards left behind from traveling trainers. The wild pokemon had grown to tolerate her presence and her city had developed a respect for her. While her parents opted for a more home approach to teaching, this also allowed Leilani help her mother in her duties. She was almost a constant body next to her mother, learning all she could about holistic medicine and the earth that provided such. Leilani also learned much from her father as well, gaining his ability to twist nature into a tool or object that could be used.

Leilani had a wonderful childhood, up until her father died in a terrible accident at the age of thirteen. Things spiraled for her and her mother, the lost of the second income effecting them the most and having to force them to downsize. Yet, the two never let their struggles ruin them. Life went on and they adapted more to the land in order to cut the costs of now having only one mainstream of income. This lead Leilani have the desire for something more. Her love for the land that provided for her family wanted her to preserve it, especially growing up seeing how Team Rocket only seek to want to destroy the land they lived in. She begged her mother to enroll her into regular school, which was a huge adjustment to Leilani. She was lucky enough that her parents had done well with keeping up with her school work and on track with "normal kids" that she was able to slip right into her right grade. Yet, no one really knew her outside of her mother being a "witch doctor".

For a year or two, she drowned. Drowned in the materialistic ideals that swallowed the younger generations. Technology, fashion, the latest trends it was so hard to keep up with but Leilani wanted to be accepted, begging her mother to provide these things so she may "fit in". And fit in, she did well. She was pretty enough, people frolicked to her once she started to wear the right clothes and do her hair a certain way. Yet, she still longed to be in nature. She never felt fulfilled being around those who wore fake smiles and only wanted to gossip. Leilani was happy to graduate and immediately enrolled in college in Lilycove City. She had always wanted to be an environmental scientist for as long as she could remember and had the full support of her mother backing her She only attended her first year before she decided to transfer to their online program. Unable to continue to watch the destruction of Hoenn, she decided to sign up for the rangers which seemed like a perfect start to entering her field and making a difference in the world.
