Erin doesn't request to be paired with the same person with whom she executed the jewelry store heist for some dumb sense of sentimentality or feeling of righteousness. Erin is far more pragmatic: he followed instructions and was efficient enough to keep up with her.

Funny how she never noticed this laboratory building in the upper part of Slateport, still standing and fully functional, on her first visit to the city. The building's highest floors are almost entirely intact, but they're ushered inside and down many sets of stairs to a particular part of the lab where an allegedly confidential experiment is already underway.

She doesn't turn; the sound of footsteps beside her are all the confirmation she needs that he's there. "Priam, right?"

They never shared their names during their first mission together, but it had come up briefly in the meeting where she specifically asked for him. Whether the same higher-ups would have shared her own name with him, she wouldn't know. Honestly, it wouldn't bother her either at this point.

She only needs a glance to figure out what they're doing. The audino in the center of the room takes on the job of lab pikachu for the day. As for why exactly they're doing it, she can only guess. Actually, she'd rather ask. "What are you trying to accomplish?"

with his espeon following after his steps, priam enters the scene after being called to assist a partner from an earlier mission. she asks a question. he gives her confirmation.

"uh, yes!"

he'd rather be called conrad. that's how he always introduced himself. it sounds much more professional and grown up to be called by the surname instead for some reason. he doesn't get the convention of it, but it was his general observation with how it goes most of the time.

they are greeted by a strange contraption that he has never seen before, but has somehow can relate with. time with @fritz has had him unfazed with strange laboratory equipment, regardless of whether he recognizes how exactly they work or not.

he says nothing as she tries to interrogate them. he is curious as well, after all.

The scientist doesn't fully answer her question, but it's a simple enough task to complete while she inspects the rest of the installations. "Siri," she calls, her fingers already tapping the aforementioned's pokéball open. A Porygon2 emerges, its cute rounded limbs tilting from one side to the other until its eyes grasp the extent of their situation.

Audino isn't known to evolve or transform into any variants, with or without evolutionary stones—not to mention the gem the two Rocket members had pocketed looks like no ordinary evolutionary stone, to begin with. More relevant to the Porygon2, however, is the fact the pink pokémon's being held up between wires that immobilize it with difficulty.

beam directed at the pokémon in an attempt to figure out what their best move would be in regards to its wellbeing.

he doesn't get what they mean, but he could infer from erin's expression that it wasn't good. eyes widened when she ordered her pokemon to directly interfere with the operation.

"i'll give this a try."

he releases another pokemon at her request, an arcanine. the large beast releases nothing but a huff upon getting called, although its eyes quickly trained on the target. it wasn't hard, considering the contraptions made it the center of attention within the room.

helping hand!"

both the arcanine and the espeon would let out a cry at his command, boosting the audino's parameters with their move. it was always used right before a move was performed in order to enhance its potency. it'll keep it back to its healthy state, somehow, instead of being a vegetable that does not seem to have any vitality to help with the operation.

turned out pretty useless, in the end. Something may have blocked off her telepathic abilities.

Maybe the audino's too far gone to really offer any leverage for the gardevoir to look into. Maybe something bigger than them, an outside entity, deemed them unworthy of better luck. Whatever the case, they'd need to reformulate their plan.

Priam's approach is a lot more straightforward and it seems to do relatively better. "Follow his approach," she instructs the gardevoir, who doesn't offer another

helping hand

, but rather gathers a pink sphere of pure light energy. The

aims directly at the audino.

"Too lively." It's not regret that drives her words, but mere observation. To return some life to the pokémon, or to prioritize the experiment's execution?

that was the best thing that priam's pokemon could do. helping hand.

he stares at his pokemon. the effects of the move comes as a burst instead of continuous buff. he could ask his pokemon to keep doing it, but he wonders how helpful it would be.

"how about you use helping hand on the gardevoir this time?"

he points his fingers to erin's pokemon. both of his espeon and his arcanine's eyes follow. another release of energy came, this time to help support the efforts of the fairy-type instead of the audino.

heal pulse was strengthened, and whatever the psychic was trying to accomplish, priam hoped that his pokemon would be able to make a difference this time.

"i-is it working?" he asks erin.

Belle can feel the surge of power product of the espeon's and arcanine's efforts. It's revitalizing, if not for the audino then at least for her. The

glows brighter and stronger than ever, but she knows her trainer to be more a results-oriented person and she fears not being able to keep up with her expectations.

Erin squints. It doesn't take a biologist to tell their joined efforts are barely having any effect on the audino. "Hard to tell," she lies to Priam, not yet willing to give up. "Keep it up."

"nothing significant's happening," he mentions the obvious.

clearly, they need more to accomplish what needs to be accomplished.

priam was running out of options. most of his pokemon were not suited for a job such as this. priam needed to try a new approach aside from just bombarding everything with helping hand if he wants to make a difference.

"you over there!"

his hand points to the scientist, who gets frazzled by the boy's energetic call.

priam gets arrogant with his choices in life once again and approaches the console. there were a bunch of screens that displayed values that corresponds to the monitored audino's certain aspects. he wasn't sure what they were, and he knows they're science-y enough for him to get nothing from it even if it was explained to him.

his attention goes to the control panel. "these sliders are for something, right?" he asks the person in charge. before he gets a definite answer, he gets them to their limits. max means good, he believes.

Maximum settings could indeed be a good indicator of an experiment going well. According to plan. Most of the time, however, they carried somewhat less pleasant implications. That is to say, potentially deadly implications.

Given the state of the test subject being utilized and the restraints put around it, she's willing to bet this case fit the latter scenario better.

The spiderweb of wires keeping the audino in check goes wild. Sparks seem to come out of them, each one charged with too much electricity to be contained. Smoke; first a thin trail, and then a proper fire-like emission of dark gray gas.

Interesting. Erin's body freezes for a fraction of a second, but curiosity gets the best out of her. Those signs don't scream of immediate failure, at least.

"no, not really. why'd you ask?" he answers

priam did not have much of a personal life outside of rocket. any connections he has made were either from a job that needed to be done, or any locals that somehow managed to try and befriend him. he knew not to get too attached, however.

if she was asking for a date or anything though, priam wouldn't hesitate accepting it.
