The lab space assigned to Ceri Glynn by the M.A.G.M.A Division is on the third floor of Sootopolis’ Blackstone Labs, and today, Isaac Merlo has been granted special access to such a restricted area. The purpose behind the invitation had not been clearly explained, but in her text message Ceri had mentioned ‘prototypes 😲', ‘rlly cool!’ and '💯 ull loooove it!!!!’, and so, here they are.

Thankfully for Isaac, when it comes to things she’s excited about, Ceri cares little for hiding them from her Team Rocket colleagues, especially since it already takes her way too much effort to keep her beloved work for the syndicate hidden from just about everyone else she meets. This is why the associate is greeted with the brightest and most Cheshire-like of grins.

”Hey, hey! You heard of what went down on Meteno, right?” She sits on her desk, clad in a lab coat bearing the embroidered logo of the division, and if he's observant enough, perhaps Isaac would notice the strange black pokéball in her hand. As if to make its presence obvious, she lightly tosses it up and then catches it, repeating the motion a few times.

[attr="class","skullbody"]When Ceri was this excited about something, either she'd cracked a scientific breakthrough or Isaac was about to be turned into a guinea pig. Sometimes both.[break][break]

Isaac didn't mind, though. Ceri was one of the first friends he'd made in Rocket, and it had been far too long since he'd gotten swept up in her infectious enthusiasm. Besides, with all of the Everything he'd endured lately, getting hit by a goofy, mildly dangerous prank was nothing by comparison.[break][break]

She was off like a bolt of lightning, talking shop the moment Isaac set foot in her lair. The fact that someone's first words to him were finally about something besides his eye felt strangely relieving. "Good to see you too, Ceri," he teased, knowing that this backstage access was already her way of showing that.[break][break]

Naturally, she wanted to know how much he knew about Meteno. All the better for calibrating the right levels of "ta-da!" "Vaguely. Nobody gave me the full brief yet," he said. Zev had gotten him up to speed on Littleroot. He'd lived (somehow) through Mt. Pyre. Meteno's mysteries were still just that. "But between the weird crystal Pokemon running around, the tundra that's taken up half of Oldale, and the fact that we're all still alive, I'm gonna guess the answer is 'A Lot.' "

It’s not that Ceri doesn’t care for her friends, on the contrary, she’s glad to see Isaac Merlo is alive and doing well (sans cool battle scar, she’ll have to remember to mention that one), but she can often get so swept up in her excitement that she simply forgets to mention things that seem obvious to her. So, of course she doesn’t even pause when Isaac says it’s good to see her.

What he says next is what matters.

”Exactly! Weird crystal pokémon. Super neat, right?” He may not think so, but she does, and as if proof of this, she stops tossing the strange black pokéball and clicks something on the tablet by her side. An image appears on one of the screens mounted to the wall behind her: the same image of 99943 Meteno that had been shown by declan walsh during the meeting back in September — top secret League data that Underboss Del Mar had stolen from the Mossdeep Space Centre. ”Remember this?”

She’s positively vibrating with excitement.

”Terastal crystals, they’re calling them. Previously only found in the Paldea Region. To put it in the simplest way possible… think of them kind of like Mega Stones.” She smirks at him then, and without a warning, the “pokéball” is chucked his way. ”That’s a Tera Orb prototype I made to harness and use the energy of Terastal Crystals.”

[attr="class","skullbody"]"It's a nice reminder these guys are capable of so much more than we think they are." Isaac may not have brought into all that "Pokemon exist for the glory of Rocket" messaging, but it was hard to argue against M.A.G.M.A.'s value in the field of Pokemon research. Pokemon capabilities were getting analyzed left and right and pushed to their limits, both well-trod ground like Mega Evolution and now this mysterious phenomenon of Terastalization.[break][break]

They were wasting no time, too. If what Ceri showed him was true, Terastal Crystals were a closely-guarded regional secret until mere days ago. "Paldea's gotta have some hardcore customs-" he started, only to find his latest witty remark cut off at the pass by his worst enemy.[break][break]

Hand eye coordination.[break][break]

Isaac had been making some strides with his eye, but a hand-sized object coming right at him was still beyond his abilities. Isaac tried to reach for the ball, only to find himself groping open air as it smacked into his chest. The ball bounced up, and Isaac saw his second chance. Sometimes, fingertips barely swiped against it. At other times, bounces of his hand propped it back into the air. It was fumble after fumble, but like hell was Isaac going to let something this rare and precious clatter into the ground.[break][break]

Finally, Isaac managed to catch the ball, mere inches before it hit the ground. He wiped the sweat from his brow, sighing in relief. On the bright side, his mishap gave Ceri plenty of time to introduce the concept he was now holding onto.[break][break]

"Damn. Quick work, I gotta say," Isaac said, proud of his friend's efforts. "So how's this bad boy work, anyway?"

Was it kind of a dick move on her part to throw the Tera Orb despite the fact that Isaac clearly no longer has an eye for handball? Maybe so, but hindsight is 20/20 (also something Isaac no longer has) and hindsight aside, Ceri’s wits are ever too sharp:

“Ey! Good to know you haven’t totally messed up your hand-eye coordination. Cool battle scar, though.”

There’s no ’What happened?’, ‘Are you okay?’ or ’How are you feeling?’. Ceri is no nurse, she doesn’t do human patients, but in her own way, this is her showing she cares enough to acknowledge the one-eyed elephant in the room… And then she goes on with her explanations about Terastellization as if nothing were wrong at all…

“Alrighty! Sooooo…” On her desk, there’s a box, which when opened reveals crystal shards of all colours. There’s sharp and odd in shape — TERA CRYSTALS collected by Team Rocket. “Tera Crystals, yeah? You take one of an specific type, it syncs with your pokémon, and then when your Tera Orb activates the pokémon gains that type when TERASTELLIZED. Easy as can be! Temporary augmentation! Kinda sorta like Mega Evolution but also not!”

She smiles proudly, beaming with excitement, and it’s then that she reveals the best part of all:

“That prototype is all yours. So, what do you say? Wanna give it a go?”

But Ceri's chipper compliment and quick wit put a smile on his face nonetheless. She had a way of defusing situations with little more than a smile and a wink. Even ones she caused.[break][break]

Still, he wouldn't be in his usual role of ~~test subject~~ lovely assistant today. Instead, he'd get to take the brand new tech Ceri whipped up for a spin. It was a familiar concept by now. Take a conduit (Keystone, Tera Orb). Attune it to a crystal (Mega Stone, Tera Crystal.) Rub it all over a compatible Pokemon. And presto! Cool things happened.[break][break]

Well. Mostly. "That can't seriously be what we're calling it," Isaac said. Terastal Crystals? Sure. But Terastalization? Come on, people! That was like calling a perfectly good Mew-Man "Mewtwo" or some shit.[break][break]

At least the crystals looked more badass than they sounded. They came in every color of the rainbow, especially blue. Finding himself rather indecisive, Isaac let out the lovely assistant's own lovely assistant. "No eating these," Isaac chided as his Totodile, Watson, appeared atop a nearby stool.[break][break]

Watson peered thoughtfully at the array of forbidden rock candy, thoughtfully scratching his chin. And then he grabbed one whose dark green hue reminded him of Bongo.[break][break]

Isaac smiled in soft approval as Watson made his choice. "Alright. I think we're ready to give it a go," he said. "Now, how do we attune these things, again?"

"Hey, hey, don't look at me. The name already existed. Blame Paldea!" She laughs, because that much is true. Terastal Crystals and Terastallization are well-known and well-honed in the Paldea region, but the phenomenon had never been present anywhere else... until now. Much of the reason why Ceri had been able to create Tera orb prototypes so quickly had been the data provided by their contacts in Paldea, which had saved her a lot of time in finding out the dos and don'ts of Terastal Crystals.

"Careful there, Watson. You wouldn't want to end up accidentally filled with Terastal energy." There's a mischievous smirk, but just in case, she still closes the box the moment a crystal is chosen. Then her attention turns to Isaac's question. "Okie, so... Think of it like an in-between between a Passho Berry and a Mega Stone, ya? You give the crystal to the Pokémon you want to Terastallize, and it will absorb its energy, causing it to disintegrate. One time use and forever able to Terastellize to the crystal's type when its trainer's Tera Orb activates. Make sense?"

Probably not the simplest wording out there, but she's trying to put it in as close to layman's terms as possible. Out of consideration for Isaac, of course.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Huh! Isaac knew the crystals were found elsewhere, but he wasn't sure that the phenomenon and its name had followed suit. Clearly, the Paldean government had some massive sway to prevent a secret like that from leaking earlier. Or maybe they were the only ones with the ability to replenish Tera Power, making any appearances outside of Paldea easily written off one-and-dones.[break][break]

Regardless, the power sounded like an in between of the permanency of a Mega Stone and the self-reliance of a Passho Berry. Once they were absorbed, a Pokemon had access to the matching Tera Type whenever they were to undergo Terastalization. "So give a Pokemon one of these bad boys, and whenever I toss the orb out, they change to match," Isaac said. It was a lot simpler when you stopped tera-adding Tera to every stinkin' tera-word.[break][break]

"Alright, Watson. Let's get to absorbi-" When Isaac turned his attention back to his Pokemon, there was a claw crammed in his mouth and a guilty look in his eye. "Watson." Isaac's exasperation was met with a cute little crocodilian shrug.[break][break]

"Arceus, you're lucky that thing's gonna dissolve. He took the Tera Orb in hand, giving it a quick little once over and feeling its heft. Once he was satisfied, he lobbed it into the air above Watson, light pouring down from the orb. It turned a brilliant forest green as it hit Watson, his entire body encasing itself in crystal. "Alright, Watson. Let's see what you've got!"[break][break]

When the crystal surrounding him shattered, Watson looked . . . pretty much identical to how he did before. The only difference was a thin layer of forest green crystals surrounding him, looking less like crystals growing on him and more like he was a Watson statue. Before Isaac could remark on how underwhelming it was, a trio of crystalline flowers sprouted from the top of Watson's head. They were practically as tall as Watson was, and sparkled like disco balls as the light shined down on them.[break][break]

"Damn. Now that's what I call dramatics. How're you doing, buddy?" Watson flashed a thumbs up, rasping cheerfully in response. "Good. Now that's what I like to hear."

Ceri doesn't need to call for her Rotom for the Pokémon to appear, possessing a camera that tirelessly records the metamorphosis of Isaac Merlo's Totodile. It had been quite easily that the Pokémon had gotten used to assisting her at the lab after the M.A.G.M.A Division had given it to her (thanks, Cillian Quinn), and these days, Pixel is an assistant she almost can't do without. Well, she could, but having a Rotom just makes everything so much easier, you know?

"Cute, right? That's a grass type Tera Crown! Some Pokémon don't like them too much so it doesn't show up for them, but I guess Watson easily adapted to the change. What a good lad."

Watson gets a treat from Ceri for that one, thrown his way with a simple "Catch!", then her attention turns back to Isaac.

"So Watson can stay Terrastellized like this until he faints, and he will be grass type the whole time. He'll have access to this move called TERA BLAST, which obviously matches whatever type your Pokémon is Terrastellized at. I'd tell you to test it, but I don't want you to break my equipment, yeah?" She laughs. "You can give him more type options by having him atune with more Terastal Crystals... even all eighteen types, if you want."

There's much more she could tell him, but she tries to keep things as simple as possible.
