It had been some hours since he’d dropped by the beach party, and he knew he needed a break. Bring around too many people did do something to his own nerves, so he’d slipped away and retreated to the Lilycove Pokémon Center to retrieve a certain Dive Ball before heading back to where the party was.[break][break]

But instead of rejoining the people, he’d made up his mind to look for a place that was somewhat more secluded—he didn’t want anyone else seeing what he was about to do. He knew he owed it to this particular Water-type that he’d been taking care of for what, almost half a year now, and that was to make sure she remained in touch with the water that made up her home.[break][break]

Ideally not in Shoal Cave, but hey, it’s close enough… he thought idly as he found a secluded cove where there were enough protective rocks forming a barrier around the little area. Seeing that there was enough access to the waves, he then slipped down and around the rocks, being careful not to trip over them and finally arriving in peace and quiet solitude.[break][break]

“Alright… everyone, get out of your balls,” he said, flinging up seven Pokéballs and watching as several flashes of light erupted from them. One of the largest hit the water with a splash, and he wrinkled his brows in greeting at his Lapras, Marius. “Go on, take a little swim. Don’t go too far now,” he called out as the dual-type lurched forward, happy to be near a source of water.[break][break]

Two of the forms took to the sky as his Salamence and Braviary emerged—while Gabriel made a leap for the air above, he was surprised to see that Kyouya had landed on one of the rocks and began pecking at his wings. “Not one to fly today?” he asked the other quietly, before getting a squawking reply.[break][break]

The lightest of feather-touches then made an impromptu landing on his nose—he knew it was Carina, from the way he could feel the tiny feelers tickling him. “Yes, Carina… how’re you today?” he asked the Cutiefly, risking getting cross-eyed just to keep the tiny Pokémon within view. The Magmortar had shied away from the rocks, while Vincent the Riolu had gone off to play in the sand—[break][break]

But it was the Dive Ball’s occupant, who’d emerged in a whirl of watery limbs, who immediately made a beeline for him—only for Alexei to hold up his hand in an attempt to stop the other from squashing the Cutiefly on his nose![break][break]

“Whoa, whoa there. Zelle, calm down! Can’t you see there’s someone on my nose?” he said out of exasperation, hearing the Phione let out a sniffling noise, all the while trying to make a beeline toward him.[break][break]

Away from the scene of the party, a Hydreigon landed in the water with a powerful splash. Thomas would climb onto the back of the Dragon, who would glide over to the point his master directed him to. Despite the size of the dragon, Thomas was careful enough to take a route that was obscured by the large rocks, and with his Hydreigon keeping a low profile by "swimming" instead of outright flying to their destination.

Moments earlier, Thomas was taking a break outside of the party venue. It was there that he received the text from Alexei to come down to a secluded area, with directions as to where to go. Seeing as Alexei was one of the few people in the Region that he could genuinely trust at this point, Thomas thought little of meeting his friend there. He had hoped that it wasn't some sort of trap, that Rocket had gotten to him, and were setting him up as well.

Thomas would arrive at the secluded area, disembarking off his Hydreigon once it was above sand. As the trainer made his way over to his friend, canvas sneakers would leave their imprint in the sands below. The Hydreigon would settle back down along the shore, content with relaxing while his master took care of business.

"Yo, Alexei, you wanted to s-", Thomas started out, before being cut off by the sight of the blue Pokemon. "I've never seen a Pokemon like that before.", Thomas said out loud, already amazed with seeing something new. It had been years since he genuinely encountered a new species of Pokemon, but the feeling wasn't lost to him. All he knew was that this Pokemon was not native to Kalos, Kanto, Hoenn, or Unova.

It was then that something occurred to him. "Is that- the Pokemon that hatched from the egg we retrieved?", he'd inquire. If that were the case, then this meeting became a reunion.

He’d been absently tracing patterns in the sand with a stick—and not too far away, Vincent was doing the same, although the Riolu couldn’t understand why his companion was doing it. Was he distracted?[break][break]

There were times the little jackal Pokémon’s auric-sensing abilities were off the mark, and now just happened to be one of those times. Both didn’t look up until they heard the sound of another voice catch their attention—and thankfully, it was someone both were familiar with.[break][break]

Letting out a friendly yip in greeting, the Riolu then kicked up a little sand and then rushed over to Thomas, sniffing the air around him before turning back to his companion and catching his attention.[break][break]

“Hm? Vince? What is—“ Alexei said absentmindedly, looking up just in time to see that the Phione was headed right towards Thomas, watery limbs outstretched in an attempt at a face-crushing hug![break][break]

“Zelle! What are you doing, no, stop your—“ he continued a few moments later, alarmed at the sight. He knew the last few times that his Phione had greeted someone like this, whoever was on the receiving end was either not amused (ex-boyfriend @leslie), unamused (Miss Isra Nightingale and Miss freya morningstar) or just outright nonplussed at the sight (kyle lopez).[break][break]

How was Thomas going to react to this?[break][break]

The Phione, on the other hand, didn’t give two shits in the world as she let out a watery cooing noise and made this righteous beeline for Thomas’ face, ready to give the other human a watery welcome hug in greeting.

In response to the Riolu's greeting, Thomas would give the pup a gentle pat on the head, as well as a smile. Before the Kalosian knew it, the Phione was rushing up to him. Thomas, having crouched to greet the Riolu, remained crouched as the mysterious Pokemon rushed up to meet him. It was at this point that he felt the blue creature wrap itself around his head, pressing up against his face. Despite the Gym Leader's protest, the hug went through uninterrupted.

But rather than freak out, like the others, Thomas instead smiled. He would gently pet the bulbous head of the Phione, doing his best to nuzzle the young creature with his nose, returning her affection. "Well aren't you an affectionate one~", he cooed at her, continuing to gently pet her. "So your name's Zelle? I'm Thomas! I... I was there with Alexei when you were discovered. I'm glad that you're in good hands~", Thomas spoke to her softly, yet affectionately.

In all of his encounters with Alexei, he had probably not seen this side of the Kalosian. While he was one to praise his Pokemon, and treat them well, the other encounters he had were business of some sort, and were in that mindset. But here, being greeted by the hatchling, if one could call her that at this stage, brought out Thomas' more affectionate side. A side that was seldom seen by people, save for his girlfriend, and the Pokemon they took care of on the Ranch.

"What's the matter, Alexei? Zelle here's a total sweetheart~", Thomas told his friend, clearly happy with the affection he was getting.

Normally, when she would show her affection and familiarity she would be peeled away from whosever face she’d latch onto at the time, and then end up all upset and start bawling because she was only trying to greet whoever human had come in close range![break][break]

It was like only her ‘mama’, Alexei, didn’t mind the face-crushing affection.[break][break]

Well, it was just him—until this very moment.[break][break]

She peered deeply into the young man’s green eyes, wondering if she was going to get pulled off and unceremoniously tossed back at her purple-eyed mama. She watched the green-eyed human, blinking, waiting…[break][break]

…for a punishment that never came.[break][break]

Instead, she heard words that had gone way over her head, and then she let out a very pleased cooing noise, squishing herself against his forehead before turning around and then beaming in her purple-eyed mother’s direction.[break][break]

“Zelle, you—“ Alexei began to stammer as he watched the exchange happen between the two. For the briefest of moments, he could only stare at Thomas in silent wonder.[break][break]

Nobody else had been able to comprehend the Phione’s affection, and somehow—it was like the Water-type had a feeling that this other human was also friendly.[break][break]

“…you think she knows you’re her parent, too?” he asks a few moments later, a look of bemusement crossing his face. He couldn’t believe the way that Thomas had acted in front of him, like… wow. This was massively unexpected from the other.[break][break]

It was like seeing a very hidden side of someone—he knew that this privilege was only given to a few. Had he really earned it?[break][break]

Well, in a way, maybe?[break][break]

“Do you—do you know anything about her kind?” he asks Thomas a few moments later, hoping that the other man does.

Thomas continued to nuzzle the Phione affectionately as she clung to him. Such displays of affection were commonplace on the Ranch. Especially with Pulse, his second Audino. The pink, fluffy creature was probably just as much of an affection fiend as the Phione seemed to be. If anything, he wanted to invite Alexei and Zellie over to Duvet Ranch one day, just to have her meet his little tribe of Audino. He was positive that they'd all love her, not just Pulse.

"I wonder.", he remarked in response to his question. Though it was possible, he had to question it. Given Alexei's reaction to the spectacle, it seemed that the Phione rushing people to hug them was a common occurrence, but one that didn't always end well.

"I'm afraid I don't.", he'd answer Alexei, a frown forming over his face. "This is the first time I've ever encountered such a Pokemon.", he'd admit. "But, I can try to help you do some research into the matter, if you'd like.", he'd offer.

As Thomas spoke, he continued to pet the Phione, and practically shower her in affection.

Zelle continued to make the same noises, relishing in the attention and the fact that she was getting a constant stream of affection from the brown-haired man in front of her.[break][break]

“It’s like… she knows. That you’re the other dad,” Alexei said presently, letting the Phione do her own thing. Maybe it was right that he held onto her after all.[break][break]

There was still so much to know about her, and his answer made him frown a few moments.[break][break]

“Damn, I thought you’d know at least something, not being from Hoenn and all,” he replied a few moments later as the Riolu came over once more, still holding the stick and clumsily tracing patterns in the sand around them.[break][break]

“I would take that offer gladly,” he added. “I’ve done some of my own researching too. Haven’t found anything yet though…”[break][break]

"Sorry to disappoint. I really wish I knew more.", he'd tell Alexei sincerely.

"What sorts of materials have you looked at? Would you be able to send anything my way?", Thomas asked the Unovan. "In any case, would I be able to take some pictures of this Pokemon?", he'd ask. "A shot from the front, and a shot from the back will do just fine. Just in case there's an image to be found in an older book, or something of the sort.", he'd explain to Alexei.

"Also, did you manage to take a picture of the egg, before it hatched?", he'd ask Alexei.

“I’ve tried looking for stories about her kind. Well… clearly you can tell it’s not going well,” he added with a sigh. The Phione was still buzzing around Thomas, showering him with affection.[break][break]

Well, at least someone wasn’t getting all angry at her for attacking this human she was attempting to face-cuddle with![break][break]

At the mention of taking pictures, he nodded.[break][break]

“I mean, she’s just as attached to you as she’s normally attached to me. She wouldn’t mind that. Right, Zelle?”[break][break]

At the sound of her name, she let out this cooing noise, before touching her forehead against Thomas’s own. At the mention of the egg, he then fished out his phone.[break][break]

“You have data-sharing? I took a few pictures of it after bringing it home with me when we got out of the cave.”[break][break]
