The crinkling sound of paper would've been the first hint as to what it was, but if that wasn't enough, the label the swiftly slid between the bars, right in front of her knees would be a dead give away to what it was.

annalise watches him closely as he reaches into his pocket and produces two granola bars. their wrappers catch the light and the crinkle makes her cringe inwardly at the sound. she doesn't want it, not even in their seemingly unopened packages, but her body needs it. desperation supersedes self-preservation. one is taken up into shaky hands, trembling fingers peel the foil, then she breaks off a piece.

The peeking slants of sunlight is all that was necessary to make out the outlines of her frail arm slipping through the cracks of the bars. At first, he tilted his head, confused by the gesture. But, beat later, realization settles along his features, and that was enough to draw his limbs back to life.

He stepped forward and glanced at the granola bar just within reach. The sight was enough to evoke a short stream of air out his nostrils.

"Fine."

Lifting his eyes, his gaze collided with hers once more, never once unlatching as his entire body swooped forward, dipping his torso downward so he could take a bite from the thin bar.

"See," He drawled, voice smothered down to a low secret shared amongst friends, "safe to eat."

her outstretched hand trembles as he approaches. it draws on nebulous memories of feeding freya morningstar 's salamence for the first time — the fear of not knowing if she can trust the beast in front of her to not take her whole hand with it, juxtaposed with the tentative trust that must be afforded lest they all starve.

she holds his gaze as he bends down, then lower to watch his teeth come together around granola.

he's really eating it, she thinks, eyes lingering on his mouth as he chews. her fingers move on their own, wrapper crinkling as she shakily rips the rest of the bar free. [break][break]
her concentration breaks, sick with hunger, as she shoves the bar into her mouth and reaches for the other. it's the best meal she's had in too long. it takes her mind to another place, to razor-sharp memories of throwing one of these in her bag before heading to work. [break][break]
the wrapper in her hand turns blurry with tears.
