and so a message arrives, finally. it's curt. no embellishment. just the day of the week, time, and location. despite the lack of tonal flair, it is quite possible wren rourke would be able to hear elijah gardner's voice from the sparse syntax:

tuesday. 730AM. petalburg woods.

elijah's already there an hour earlier. in the morning, the wood is alive. taillow croon to choruses awaiting their turn on the other boughs. the composition of their choir shifts by the waking minute.[break][break]

should wren rourke find him, earlier, on time, or late, elijah does not seem offended.[break][break]

instead, he directs his offense to the blighted crop circle. a creation of Elisabeth Fiorelli's unbeknownst to him. all the dead plants stand in shocked death like morbid statues.[break][break]

"morning. like what you see?" his gogoat trods backward and away from dead grass.

[attr="class","star2"]True to the assumption, Wren knows exactly the message is from when it shows up in his inbox. Terse as ever, it seems. No less deterred by that taciturn demeanor, Wren sets out on the designated Tuesday.[break][break]

Though admittedly, despite being a morning person, he finds it a bit difficult to peel out of bed and away from the warmth of being snuggled against Levy Alinsky ’s back.[break][break]

But it’s important, so he sets off early– a like minded proclivity. His steps might have dragged with morning drowsiness had it not been for the steady pace set by his gogoat. elijah gardner didn’t need to inform Wren of the purpose for the meeting request for him to assume what it might be about.[break][break]

At least the birds still sing in the trees. No more than an absent thought as they trot deeper into the thick of the woods. The blight spreads around them. Shriveled and rotted plantlife dotted with sickly signs of deterioration. The further they tread, the quieter it grows as the wild pokemon migrate away from the destruction.[break][break]

As Petalburg’s captain, it feels like a pressing issue. One that this meetup will allow a closer look at. When he finally finds Elijah, a worried frown has settled on his face. Gold eyes drift up to study the other, and despite trying, he fails to rouse his typical cheeriness. “Not at all…” his head still dips in greeting. “Morning.”[break][break]

“Strange, how abruptly this happened.” Once blight sets in, though, is where the real issue takes hold.

elijah is quick to notice how chapfallen wren is. how he adopts the dull hues of the blighted world around him in simultaneous contrast. how the pigment of tragedy weighs wren down—at least, to elijah's eyes.[break][break]

the apothecary is on his nervous gogoat. he struggles to encourage it. a hand brushes against the gogoat's neck and finally, after much prodding, they pass the threshold of death to trod on dead grass.[break][break]

"think it's a disease?" elijah asks. "maybe a salazzle's CORROSION?"[break][break]

elijah grumbles as he cranes his neck toward wren.[break][break]

"hate to see it either way."

[attr="class","star2"] Basil is equally as uneasy about treading the blighted ground. Hooves sink into dry soil and rotted plant life as Wren coaxes him forward, until they can plod alongside Elijah and his own gogoat.[break][break]

Wren hums doubtfully. “Do you think a salazzle would be capable to this extent, though?” And if so, why? He’s never seen a disease so rampant, either. But then again–he’s still green.

Any sort of botanical epidemic would be a new experience. He’s limited to photos and footage he’s seen in his classes.[break][break]

His hands reach up to thread through the finer fur at the top of his gogoat’s head between the horns. Basil huffs, impatient to either get out of the area or carry on rather than treading in place.[break][break]

“You’re right,” he says after a beat. A slow sigh filters out of his lungs, and he can’t shake the weird vibe the area seems to have.[break][break]

“Feels kind of ominous, you know? Not in, like, a natural way.”

wren's right. a salazzle would not have been able to decimate the foliage in this manner, not by its usual mechanisms of flame and poison. as a blunt thumb tip scratches his chin, elijah wonders if this destruction had been committed by the natural elements at all.[break][break]

"sure." elijah snorts. a small smile creeps onto his lips. "you scared?"[break][break]

his gogoat keeps its head high, fighting the instinct to graze.[break][break]

"could be signs of the end times!"

[attr="class","star2"] The tease causes Wren to falter, cheeks flaring with color as his eyes widen in sudden defiance as he twists toward Elijah. He puffs right up like a feisty minccino. “What? No, I’m not scared.” His chin tips upward in his stubbornness– all of it a display that his own gogoat lets out a huff of skepticism toward.[break][break]

Gold eyes fall to his mount, “You’re supposed to be on my side,” he grumbles, but it only earns him the shake of Basil’s floppy ears in exasperation.[break][break]

It isn’t a matter of being scared, though. He just…doesn’t know how to put the strange feeling into words. His hands trail the withered, blight bitten leaves of a low hanging branch, and it’s like he can feel that strange malevolence. [break][break]

Wren scoffs quietly, even as a smile edges at the corner of his mouth. “Everything’s a sign of the end times these days.”[break][break]

He’s pretty certain that Elijah’s only utilizing his sarcasm to fullest potential, but even so–do people still really believe as much?[break][break]

“The divine would be a convenient explanation, though.”

in a lazy sag, elijah leans over the side of his gogoat. thighs tighten to keep him mounted as fingers grab the loosest blade or stem to pluck. [break][break]

when he's back upright, elijah twists the dried husk of what used to be in between his fingers. it crunches like cored bone.[break][break]

"the divine?" elijah flicks the dead grass toward wren. "what do you think the divine is?"

[attr="class","star2"] Wren lets his head loll to one side in pronounced thought, the vibration of a pitched hum rumbling in the back of his throat. Gold eyes lift to the foliage up above them that the sun only barely peeks through as it dapples the path they follow in the shape of curled leaves. [break][break]

“Well, I suppose I say divine in the sense that most people associate it with–pokemon with capabilities that outreach us, so divinity is affixed to it.” A slight grin twists the corners of his mouth. “The end times of the most devout zealot.”[break][break]

Wren isn’t a zealot, of course. He wouldn’t even claim to be all that religious in how he views the symbolic importance or prevalence of legendaries.[break]break]

“My point is–maybe a salandit couldn’t do this. But something else?” His fingers lift from the gogoat’s reins to wiggle in a spookish way. “A harbinger of your end times.”[break][break]

But perhaps that is simply just a way to explain the unexplainable.

no being capable of such blight belongs in the cycle. it is no natural thing, no natural role. though elijah may not know of Elisabeth Fiorelli's patronage yet, her rocket affiliation and rank would mean little to him should he be enlightened.[break][break]

[attr="class","star2"] “I don’t disagree.” His frown deepens, voice layered with a somberness that doesn’t necessarily match his bright personality. For someone so optimistic and willing to see the best in just about anyone, referring to something as an abomination is no small thing.[break][break]

But whatever this is only seems to destroy. There have been no hints of green under the rot. A failure to persist for even the toughest strains of flora.[break][break]

Instead, the world around them remains muted and sickly brown. His gogoat doesn’t even attempt to bend and root at the ground for anything. As if he knows better than to try.[break][break]

“I would assume that more investigations will be made in order to address this,” he answers honestly, “along with whatever restorative measures might be taken up. Just to see if anything will work.”[break][break]

A mild grin tries to return to his face as his glance turns sideways. “Too many people regard these woods highly to let it be ignored. I love them too much for that.”[break][break]

Most of his life has been spent tied up with this city and these woods. His head tilts, “What about, uh, your end?”

[attr="class","star2"] “Like who?” It’s a casual prod. The little sound indicates likely resistance, but Wren’s lips tilt up in amusement. “It’d be important to know if it’s genuine research, so they don’t get run off.”[break][break]
But even if it’s just Elijah looking into it, Wren could work with that.[break][break]
“Huh?” His head whips to Elijah, not expecting the shift in topic. “What’s that got to do with anything?”[break][break]
Wren chews his lip, “I dunno. I don’t think I’m always as nice as people think I am.” He just keeps it all locked up tight. Too willing to placate most situations rather than act on his own frustrations or selfishness.[break][break]
In his mind, this isn’t exactly kindness, so much as being a push over. It’s a newer perspective. Something he didn’t fully realize until he rose to captain and accommodation became a more frequent bedfellow.[break][break]
Or at least a more obvious one.[break][break]
And beyond that…isn’t a matter of ego, too? It feels good to be viewed as the good and compassionate one.[break][break]
Maybe that’s not so good or compassionate at all.[break][break]
“You’re right, though. It doesn’t feel like enough people care.” The ecosystem is literally dying around them, and for what? For power squabbles to take precedence?
