sterling was born in the galar region, the youngest of three by far, with an almost 10-year age gap between them and their next oldest brother. their life at first, as it usually goes, was fairly uneventful. they did get tormented by their older brothers at times, but it was done out of love. their parents, as well, were kind and compassionate... although those times had to come to an end, as everything does.[break][break]

one day, when they were nine, their mother disappeared. she didn't return from her business trip that day, nor did they hear from her ever again. some claimed she'd left their father and started a new life, while others were sure something terrible had happened. his heart broken, sterling's father grew colder. their older siblings set out on their own journeys, leaving sterling with a grieving, emotionally distant father who did his best to care for them, but was unable to care for himself. sterling, as a child, didn't fully understand what was happening, and slowly became convinced that their father's inability to move on was somehow their fault.[break][break]

they became more reclusive at school as a result. they dove into video games and television as a way of hiding their pain. through a shared love for their favorite anime, they came to know an older child named levi. sterling was 12, and levi had just turned 15 when they met. he was friend and older brother all wrapped up in one for the lonely child, and sterling's outcast status didn't matter quite so much when he was around.[break][break]

levi was not happy, either. he would vent about his home life to sterling often, and though sterling tried to comfort him, it all became too much for him one day. suddenly levi was gone from sterling's life just as suddenly as he'd entered, when he was 16 years old. sterling attended the funeral, and for three years... that was the last time sterling went outside. they stopped attending school, they stopped leaving the house, they stopped talking to their father and kept themself shut up inside their room. now it was sterling's time to grieve, and for their father to be at a loss as to what to do. without much else to do, they taught themself programming, and hacking, and became something of an internet vigilante.[break][break]

finally, their father had enough. he picked up their life and took sterling with him to the hoenn region, hoping they could start fresh there. he worked hard to be encouraging, and finally sterling began to venture outside on occasion. they'd always wanted to be a pokemon ranger as a child, so their father gifted them some pokemon to take care of, hoping they could work towards that goal finally. though they remained rather reclusive, they were no longer a complete shut-in. they're attending cyber school now while they decided what they want to do with themself and their life.[break][break]

sterling is quiet, sullen even. they don't speak much, and when they do speak, the things they say can be a little... strange. they're not sure how to interact with people in real life anymore, after being locked up for so long. they can be rather rude, pessimistic, and cynical. they have a good heart, though, and a strong desire for justice and to take care of others. their guilt complex can sometimes stop them from trying to reach out, as they don't want to end up failing anyone ever again, but they still harbor a dream of one day becoming an accomplished pokemon ranger... their confidence is so low, however, that they don't know if they'll ever be strong enough to achieve it. they don't know much of who they are outside of their love of various media and their own shyness, but they're making an effort to come out of their shell.
